In my first post i forget to mention you can just apt-get
  gtk-gnutella and read the tutorial at gnutella.wego.com.

The latest gnapster (1.3.12-helix1) from spidermonkey.helixcode.com
works.  Did anyone figure out why the previous versions stopped
working?
