2020-06-07 Thread leonard morin
Thanks again for all your help. Once again, at this point, I don't remember
how I did it, but I cleared the sources list and put in the Debian
repository to download Gnome. It's taking me a lot of effort to wield the
code since I'm new at this, and I don't want to cause irreparable damage.
Be well!

At a guess, I would say these error messages occurred because
/etc/apt/sources.list is (functionally) empty - all the lines are
commented out.

I would add

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye main contrib non-free
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye main contrib non-free

(You could remove or omit the non-free and/or contrib if you don't
really need packages from those repositories).

When I first installed, my wifi didn't work on Debian, so I couldn't

download/install Gnome, as you can see from the error messages below.

Your source list has some errors. The easiest way to fix this is:
(run as root)

echo "deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bullseye main contrib non-free"

My progress so far with installing GNOME.
Finally when I log in with gdm I get the gnome desktop, the icons and
stuff, however when I log off, I get notified that I'm not running a gnome
compatible windowmanager. Well, actually I'm running WindowMaker. I think
this warning has something to do with the fact that 'wmaker-gnome' is not
installed, (is this assumption correct?) but when I apt-get install
wmaker-gnome it says wmaker-gnome is
a virtual package, but it wasn't installed when I installed wmaker?!? How
to solve this???

 Thankx.

Possibly /usr/bin/x-window-manager doesn't point to a window manager
GNOME likes? Try update-alternatives --config x-window-manager and
then select a window manager like sawfish/sawmill, icewm-gnome or
windowmaker (one that supports GNOME thingies).

Other possibility: stop GDM (as root /etc/init.d/gdm stop); then as
normal user create a small ~/.xsession file like:

#! /bin/sh
xterm
icewm-gnome

Make sure the file is executable (chmod +x ~/.xsession). Then run
startx, then in the the xterm run gnome-session. Then run gnomecc
(GNOME Control Center), make sure there's a window manager selected,
then save the info. Now kill the session (ctrl-alt-backspace works),
start up GDM and gnome-session should now know what window manager to
run.
