But should not they start with net-install CD image. 3 full CD images are too much. I downloaded the first CD image, not all three of them. To answer your question I went back to the documents I used to install the system. There is no explicit advise to download complete ISOs. It's either buying cds or downloading the netinstall. You are right about that. I just thought the netinstall was too scary. I was using Windows and wanted to install Debian. I made bootfloppies and mounted the ISO from my Windows-partition. Got the base system running, installed pppoe and Lynx and the rest is history. Since I wasn't sure I could get anything to work (i.e. network), I knew I had at least access to the different packages. In hindsight perhaps not the smartest move, everything worked like a charm. But if it didn't it would have been awful to boot into Windows for new software or information available on the internet (rinse, wipe, repeat). To be honest, I would propably do it again :). I think a lot of people who come to Debian for the first time start out as lusers and then quickly become users. Perhaps the available information regarding the install doesn't reflect that. True, I tried four times and then I got intuition that if I change the lines in source to file:/mnt/debina ... it will do. ( I was not having cd drive on my pc but I had dumped everthing to dos partition ) --kunal -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Hi, * Kunal Shah [EMAIL PROTECTED] [02-06-08 19:10]: And then, I booted from dosutils and installed everything with apt-setup( I changed the source to file:/mnt/debian/disk1 potato main/contrib etc. ) But now, it has not installed xwindows. Where is xwindows in debian potato rev6? I'm not sure about the exact name, but you can always find the packages you need with: apt-cache search whatyouarelookingfor It also did not install pine, fetchmail, iptables, squid, sendmail etc. Do I have to download tar.gz packages for these utilities or there are deb files available. This is easily remedied: apt-get install mutt fetchmail iptables squid postfix (oops) Thorsten -- When a thing has been said and said well, have no scruple. Also dselect is good start to find package. # dselect There is almost nothing which is not packaged for Debian but you need to track testing or unstable if you want latest. Certainly CDs are convenient, but it's preferable not to get them by downloading the lot. -- Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
