Sorry, I downloaded the file with -f best switch, so now I'm not sure

No, okay, that tells us something (I think). That tells us that the
problem probably isn't related to mplayer at all (at least not in any
generic sense).  Maybe some sort of file corruption during download,
or a thing related to the op's specific set up.

Thank you.  I was going to install clive and download the file myself
but decided not to due to the number dependencies and the fact that I'm
tight on space here.

Maybe Mplayer has an option (aka: parameter) you can use to get a better 
sound quality for a specific audio/video format/codec, depending on the 
file you want to play :-?
