The OP said "if I could find … good security through a VPN",
which could be interpreted as soliciting recommendations for
a good, secure VPN, as opposed to a cheap/free one that harvests
the names of all the domains you connect to (assuming that's what
you're afraid of).

(AIUI, Debian provides software for using VPNs, not a VPN service.)

Myself, I'd recommend ███ at ███.com/honest :)

There are occasional queries here about obtaining a permanent
email address, and replies usually involve purchase of (a) an
email hosting service and (b) a domain hosted by some registrar.
I don't think the people who post recommendations are being
paid by the companies named, and I don't think mentioning
commercial products is banned like, say, on the BBC.

> So yes, at least a strange post.

Inasmuch as the attribution of the recommendation is vague, I'd agree,
but I don't know any youtubers. And the OP was a little odd, too.

David.

Dunno whether it's paid, but (1) it has nothing to do with the
original post (which would be rude, to say the least) and (2)
the touted "product" is one of a commercial entity.

So yes, at least a strange post.

Are you aware that Ubuntu is a derivative of the Debian distribution?

What sort of problems are you encountering?

Do you have examples of your terminal commands and what they're
intended to do?

> I am interested in purchasing Debian

Debian can be downloaded from the web, and is priceless, literally and
figuratively. Just go to https://www.debian.org/, press the Download
button and read that page. For a laptop, get the non-free firmware
version (still priceless).

Dban has been mentioned. That might be no good if you're corporate
or you use SSDs (see their website https://dban.org/ ).
I avoid the need for erasing disks by using encrypted partitions
for everything that matters.

There are several editions of The Debian Administrator’s Handbook
available on the web. Any search engine will find them.

Cheers,
David.

dban is a good eraser if you refer to cleaning disks entirely of their

But if you have a location in mind that is better for native speakers

Question for improvement of my knowledge: How many native speakers of
Bahasa Melayu do you estimate there are in the world? Where are the

Is the Internet connection from there to wherever wiki.debian.org is

Sorry, i haven't read the thread until right now.

xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024: it changes the resolution to
1280x, but for some reason the size of the words is bigger, and i need
to change "appearance" and set the sizes smaller, but it "works", more
or less.

Thank you very much for your help.

Maybe the old style will work?

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "Default Screen"
   Monitor "Configured Monitor"
   Device "Configured Video Device"
   DefaultColorDepth 24
   Subsection "Display"
  Depth 24
  Modes "1280x1024"
   EndSubsection
EndSection

Or xrandr might work. If you start up with the monitor switched
to the other computer, can you then change the resolution with
this command?

xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024

You might need to change the "VGA" part to something else.

xrandr -q will give you some info, the second line should have
something like: "VGA connected" or "LVDS connected" or
similar. Change the --output option to that identifier.

If the xrandr mode command works to change your resolution,
you could put it in a startup script like ~/.xsession

I guess that when X starts up, it can't probe the EDID of the monitor,
so it defaults to VGA resolution . First, are you running Lenny (stable)
or testing/unstable? Second, does your xorg.conf file have a "Modes"
line in the "Screen" section or an Option "PreferredMode" line in
the "Monitor" section?

Starting debian servers/Samba Newbie - help

1999-09-01 Thread Paul McHale
I need a POP3, FTP, Print and Web server. I would use NT server, but then
I have to buy an expensive POP3 server. To save money and have a more
reliable server, I would like to use debian. Here are the plans:

Goals are:
1. Simple setup
2. Secure
3. Good available documentation

What I need are:
1. Recommendations
2. Point me to any and all documentation, please !
3. Any recommended books

Plans are:

Samba: Can't see a way around this. I hear it supports encrypted
passwords now. I don't think it did last time I used it.

POP3: Can anyone recommend a good, less than 10 user POP3 server.
Simple, secure setup important.

FTP: Probably use FTPd that debian ships with debian (I Think it does?)

Print: I think I can mount a raw print device and share it across
network. This way it is printer independent.

Web Server: I plan on apache.

Computers on the network are:
1. Windows NT 4.0 workstation
2. Windows98 Laptop
3. P133-48MBRam 1GB disk debian server

Thanks for the help,

paul
