If you mean "read the man pages", then, while I agree, in principle, that these options are in the manual, that same manual gives very little contextual information. I find man pages useful for reminding me about syntax and correct option "spelling" and use, but when I don't know how to use something, often its man page only confuses me more. While there are, I am certain, other documents that would provide this information, the lack of a comprehensive index makes finding it without help a daunting task. When I can provide better sources for information than the man pages, I do so. When I can't, and I am able to answer the question, I do that instead. > You even don't have to use options to create a 8.3 file system > that can be read by ANY OS. Re: URGENT: writing Win95 Compatible ISO Images
I assume what you are trying to do is make a disk with long file names in tact so Win95 can see the long file names properly. What you need is a mkisofs which knows how to write images in the 'joliet' file system. Mkisofs does not know how to write joliet (a proprietary fs availavble only on Win95 and NT 4.0). Currently there is know software available (that I am aware of) can write joliet compatabile images on a Linux box. Most Windows programs will however. The 'allow 32 character filenames' option in mkisofs is close, but filenames don't allways show up on Win95 with the long names in tact. This has to do with following the iso9660 standard. If your filenames have more than 1 period or spaces in them, the full 32 character filename will not show up. Re: URGENT: writing Win95 Compatible ISO Images
>How do I make a Win95 Compatible ISO Image with mkisofs? I've >tried with the -l -L options, but it doesn't work 100% all right. You can use my version of mkisofs, called mkhybrid that can create an ISO9660/Joliet/RockRidge/HFS CD image. Win95/NT4 use the Joliet extensions. Details at: http://www.ge.ucl.ac.uk/~jcpearso/mkhybrid.html Or, you could try another version of mkisofs at: ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/mkisofs-1.11GNU.tar.gz modified by [EMAIL PROTECTED] This can also generate Joliet CDs, as well as (I believe) being able to work under NT. Eric Youngdale is currently adding Joliet support to the next version of mkisofs. James Pearson ++ Dept. URGENT: writing Win95 Compatible ISO Images
Hi! How do I make a Win95 Compatible ISO Image with mkisofs? I've tried with the -l -L options, but it doesn't work 100% all right. Thanks a lot in advance!
