AFAIK, that's the most recent stable release of GNU Emacs,

That's not true. Emacs 21 was crashing quite often, had lots of bugs
and didn't support copy-paste of Unicode characters. When I switched
to Emacs 22 (emacs-snapshot), all these problems disappeared.

stable release has nothing to do with perceived stability. It merely
refers to the last non-developmental release. You might perceive Emacs
22 as stable but it hasn't even been released yet. As it has been
noted, if one wants to use an Emacs 22 pre-release version, grab
emacs-snapshot from sid.

(Emacs 22 looks a whole lot better when configured with --with-gtk
than Emacs 21 too ;-)

AFAIK, that's the most recent stable release of GNU Emacs, there are
emacs-snapshot packages of version 22 available in testing.

At least at the moment, it wouldn't be hard to backport, or directly
install, these on Etch.

Yup, etch's release beat emacs's by a nose:

there are emacs-snapshot packages of version 22 available in testing.

I've been running emacs-snapshot for months now, and it's been solid.

The package has been orphaned for about a month and it doesn't seem as if
a maintainter will pick it up. So it is no longer in sync with Emacs CVS.

I just checked apt-cache, and there's no such package in
testing. Checking the debian package search website shows
emacs-snapshot is only in unstable. Where did you get a testing
version?

My mistake, it's only available in unstable.

My mistake, it's only available in unstable.
my understanding is that any package like -cvs, -snapshot,-current, etc.
is never meant to migrate to testing or stable, it only for
unstable/sid users.

Why emacs is still 21.4.1 in Etch?

2007-04-17 Thread Yuwen Dai

Dear all,

I found version of emacs is still 21.4.1 in Etch. Is there any technical
obstacle for emacs's upgrading?

Best regards,
Yuwen
