So I went to the XFree86 download site and ran ./install -check script and downloaded and installed all the necessary files to upgrade me to 4.0.3. It worked after I removed the offending files I did option to install the package maintainers version of all the new .deb configuration files. Only thing is now the menus don't work properly.. not work in what way? did you try update-menus? try to check at least few window managers to see if all of them or just some of them are screwed up. btw why would you run install scripts from XFree86 download site? The X 4.x is in debian and you can use the ttf straight out of the box (don't even need the font server (if you don't want to serve fonts for other machines)) I don't remember now, for some reason it wouldn't work and I was in a try anything mode. It seems I have to have a certain amount of frustration in my life. well, ok. erik
