That's a nice change :-).

Sure. My reaction to "I've been running not-yet-released stuff on RH"
came from my experiences with RH 7.0. Those experiences are what
drove me to debian (and now I wonder why I didn't start here :-)).

It's pre-release and I didn't mean for this to be a "bash RedHat"
thread.

That bastard gcc 2.96 is why I'm now using debian after going round and
round with various rpm distros. I will consider gnome2 when it gets
into testing.

Huh. Is that like gcc 2.96 -- grab a cvs snapshot and call it stable?
Or are they labeled as pre-release?

I have been running GNOME 2.x on RedHat for a few weeks now and it seems
to work pretty well.

Well, no, because GNOME 2.x hasn't been released yet, and nobody has
created a working time machine. ;-) Now for GNOME 2.x prereleases and
snapshots...

There are EXPERIMENTAL packages available. Experimental is more
unstable than unstable, so don't complain if things don't work, or break
for unexpected reasons.

Having said that, the packages seem to be working pretty well. Aside
From the fact that I can't get sound to work. Also, note that GNOME 1.x

If you want to try out the EXPERIMENTAL packages, use this sources line:

Making X debs

2001-03-23 Thread Ben Monnahan

--Please CC me--

In order to use the newest matrox drivers I need to
recompile X. I have done this before successfully but
I just copied the new X11R6 directory to /usr/X11R6.
While this worked I had to hold the X packages with
dpkg. This obviously caused some problems with other
packages.
So what I would like to do, if it's not too much
work, is to compile and make my own debs of the X
packages. I haven't made any debs before so if this
is going to be way over my head LMK. I have looked
around and it seems I'm going to need to use debhelper
or doogies-build system.

Does anyone have anything that could help me get
started or some docs that I should read?

Thanks
Ben

Put the line

deb ftp://cadzentrum.m.fh-offenburg.de/pub/os/linux/debian/ ./

into your /etc/apt/source.lists. (These are no official debian packages,
it's only the result of some days, when I was bored, downloaded the source
an compiled it with out any changes against glibc 2.0 ... it worked for
me :-)

X Debs?

1999-10-20 Thread Jon Hughes
I'm trying to upgrade my X server from a default Slink installation so it'll
work with my voodoo banshee card here at work. Is there a place where I can
find the 3.3.5 debs? All the Debian page seems to have is the 3.3.2 ones
and to my knowledge that doesn't support Banshee very well.

Thanks
Jon
