Yell if you have problems. Good luck with dselect. I use it, but most developers won't because of how hard they find it to use. It's "XF86Setup". I don't recall where it lives offhand (and my

As has been mentioned, dselect can do this. Yell if you have problems.

You could fire up dselect & make the offending package "on hold", which
is the character "=". When/if a new version comes out, mark it back as
"install" ("*").

I will take the easy one. Dselect (and apt) will compare your package list against the ftp site's package list and suggest updates. Simply start dselect in ftp mode, tell it to "update", then go to "select" at the top will be listed any new or changed packages.
