Indeed. Hopefully the OP will combine reading the manual with a search
on the web. Commands to tested can be run in a terminal before finally
being committed to a file.

Note that due to my innate kindness and consideration I didn't suggest
'xset s dpms 1'. Getting out of that is not something you want to
inflict on someone even if it does teach that running arbitrary commands
found on the internet is unwise. :)

There are always gotchas, aren't there?

Whatever is set in ~/.xsessionrc may be undone by the window manager or
DE settings. The tested commands may work in a terminal but they could
be overridden during the bringing up of the X session. To illustrate:
'xset r off' works from an xterm in Xfce4; put it in ~/.xsessionrc and
it can be reversed by 'Enable key repeat' in Xfce4's keyboard settings.
If the WM or DE uses power management facilities 'xset s' may not work
in ~/.xsessionrc.

So it is quite possible the OP may have to look to getting screen
blanking to work within gnome3 using power management.

I only can disable screen blanking by e.g. Xfce's power manager, after I
disabled it by xorg.conf, it might be possible to use ~/.xsessionrc too.
However, it can be enabled by a power manager, when it's disabled by
xorg.conf, but it can't be disable using e.g. Xfce's power manger, if
it's not disabled by xorg.conf.

I think I've now unconfused myself. :) Being inclined to install minimal
systems with Xfce4 or a WM such as fvwm I mixed up power management with
xscreensaver. Installing xscreensaver means it takes over from any xset
settings in a configuration file; which makes sense. Purge xscreensaver,
log out and back into Xfce4 and what is in ~/.xsessionrc takes effect.

As an aside, the only reason I proposed ~/.xsessionrc rather than
~/.xsession as the file to put the xset command in is that I anticipated
the OP's setup with gdm3 may not use ~/.xsession. Not wanting to lead
him up one blind alley I then possibly went up another.

I disable screen blanking by /etc/X11/xorg.conf .

 I disable screen blanking by /etc/X11/xorg.conf .

A very co-operative administrator is needed to do this.

 Section ServerFlags
 Option BlankTime 0
 Option StandbyTime 0
 Option SuspendTime 0
 Option OffTime 0
 EndSection

To enable it, edit the BlankTime value

Screen blanking is completely under user control in Debian. First read
xset(1). Then create the file ~/.xsessionrc and put the wanted commands
in it. 'xset s dpms 10' might be worth a go.
