I ran a python script that I have for generating an mbox from mutt's message cache. (My INBOX has ~35½k items, but there are a fair number of stale items in the cache, leading to 37221 total. I then catted 10 copies of the mbox into a mega-one (rather, giga-) in /tmp, opened it in mutt (that's slow), sorted it variously (that's quick), read some, deleted some, and sync'ed it (slow again, as it makes a copy). All probably not helped by having level 5 debugging going into a file. So my actual mbox maxima are ½GB size and ~3000 messages. The 0.6GB INBOX obviously doesn't count as an mbox. IDK about ext4, but historically, I go back to microware's os9 circa 1983 in terms of expanding and debugging it 40+ years ago, file systems have had a max limit to the first extant of a directory, but since ext4 I guess the extant linkage is transparent, I've not run into it that I know of. But I've lost several good sized mbox files because 1 bit got fliped so I've been a maildir fan for 20 years, there you only trash one message when a sector goes to Oklahoma City for the holidays. You will have to share the actual filter and actions you configured before anybopdy can develop any clue. Also, adding the actual version of thunderbird will be useful. And it may be relevant to have the account type, too -- pop3, imap, whatever server side, and how your local mail storage is organized. Cheers, Arno Thanks. And it missed moving a msg from the nut list to the local nut sbbdir, so I went to the filter menu and had it add a new filter based on that msg. Then told it to "run it now". Apparently a big mistake!! tbird took about an hour, totally cleaned out the inbox at my mail server of 4080 some messages, w/o adding or moving to anything, absolutely zip to any local mail directory.
