jessie: dpkg-bug #768599
hi, I get an error when configuring packages during apt-get dist-upgrade [1]: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=768599 (which is fixed in dpkg 1.17.22 which is currently in unstable). The error does not re-occur when doing a apt-get -f install followed by a apt-get dist-upgrade. I guess I don't need to take further action? It seems like 1.17.22 won't currently migrate to jessie: https://release.debian.org/migration/testing.pl?package=dpkg = Do we need to take further action here? [1] Setting up systemd (215-7) ... dpkg bug regarding dependencies?
Hello, when trying to work around http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=620088 I downgraded nfs-common to the version in testing, which actually worked, even though nfs-kernel-server has a versioned dependency on nfs-common (see below), is this a bug in dpkg or did I miss something regarding the versioned dependency handling? I actually only noticed since aptitude forbid-version did bail out telling me that there is a dependency problem. Ah, thanks for pointing this out, haven't noticed it with reportbug/bugs.d.o. I actually wonder why this is not serious as Raphaël Herzog says at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=481823#10 (after all the state of the packages stays in this unresolved-dependencies state until the next APT/dpkg activity) but OTOH I can understand it's low priority. Request confirmation this is a dpkg bug
Hello everyone, I've been having some trouble with dpkg and afaik it is a bug. Can someone confirm this is worth a bugreport ? _Symptoms:_ Sometimes (not all packages, not always) dpkg fails as follows: #+v dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/noatun-plugins_4%3a3.1.0-2_i386.deb (--unpack): failed to realloc for variable buffer: Cannot allocate memory #-v _Research:_ Searching the archive reveals this bug has already been reported 2 years ago (#85040) and was apparantly solved ... so it shouldn't be happening on this version of dpkg. _SystemInfo:_ dpkg: 1.10.9 (i386) (same result with version 1.9.21 (i386)) dselect: 1.10.9 libc6:2.3.1-11 debian: stable/testing/unstable kernel: 2.4.19 arch: i686 (duron 1000Mhz) ram: 512MB (Since some bugs with dpkg had to do with locales I checked that it does happen with LC_ALL=C and LANG=C) _Question:_ Is this a bug ? If so, should I reopen the original #85040 ? (Is that even possible ?) Please be gentle since I am not an expert and have never submitted a bugreport. Hi, Forgive my newbie problems (I did install debian some six years ago, but havn't needed to do anything to it, so I'm a newbie again). I seem to have run into the same problem on two seperate occasions. I can't figure it out, but here's some info so you can at least tell me where to look. Please. On the first occasion when running apt-get install locales I'm faced with a screen of which locales I want to install. However nothing I do allows me to move on. The options are changed by moving the cursor keys to the appropriate place and pressing the space bar. I then tried to configure X, with dpkg-reconfigure, as I didn't configure X during installation. I'm using an LCD screen. I eventually got to a screen requesting usable resolutions. This screen works by moving the cursor up and down, and using the space bar to make a selection. This screen also did not allow me to move on. Stupid question: you did hit tab to move on to the 'ok' or 'next' or whatever button, right? -rob msg10749/pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

There is a posting on comp.os.linux.setup in which the author describes the same problem. I wrote to her, and she had given up on debian, as she couldn't get past this hurdle. I may be new but I'm not stupid. Is it possible for the help/key binding screen to be available at each stage? Or even a simple Tab to finish visible while in the selection mode, would do the trick. Now I've just this problem with X ... Yours Dave -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: dpkg bug?
Quoting Timothy Bedding ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): I think I have hit a bug in dpkg. I try to install an older version of xlib6g but I get a failure because xlib6g depends on libxaw6. However, I think only the new version of xlib6g (4.0.2) depends on libxaw6. The old version (3.3.6 from potato) does not depend on libxaw6. (Please can someone with potato verify this.) So, this makes me think that there is a bug because dpkg should realise that the destination version of xlib6g has no requirement and thus should not fail. libxaw6 conflicts with xlib6g ( 4.0) ...so you can't install lib6g_3.3.6-11potato15.deb. So remove libxaw6 first. BTW can you clean up your script pastes when you post them (i.e. the backspaces after shutdown). So I would have to force that remove too. Yes, looking more carefully at the Packages files, your new xlib6g is really just a pseudopackage to give you a method of getting xlibs and libxaw6 installed when you upgrade from the old xlib6g package (which is a real package). So you're going to have to get rid of all three new ones before installing the old one. Downgrading is often not as easy as upgrading as it's the exception. Just don't do it while X is running... Below is the output from dpkg just in case I have misread it. I assume I can force the downgrade to succeed with the appropriate force flags but I do not like this solution. I have dpkg version 1.6.15 installed. Any suggestions anyone? Should I contact the maintainer for dpkg to ask for a fixed version? dselect or dpkg bug?
When installing emacs/xemacs v.19 and 20 (wanted to try both versions) dselect installation of emacs20 modules exited repeatedly with the message that something had not been configured yet, but when trying to configure it, the problem remained. Finally, I wanted to remove all of the emacs/xemacs20 stuff and keep the v.19, as that was installed correctly. Now, some of the v.20 things remained although I removed it with dselect and then tried with dpkg --purge emacs20 and so on: purge --list 'emacs2*' gives something like: pn emacs20 none ... Additionally, I got the following message during dpkg execution for emacs20 removal: (Reading database... in the file /usr/lib/menu/xemacs19 at line 4: section=Apps/Editors title=XEmacs19-tty command=/usr/bin/xemacs19 Unexpected end of line I don't understand this message, because there exists a link xemacs-19.16-xemacs19.
