RE: dvd and cd burning and ripping

2008-06-30 Thread Stackpole, Chris

What tools should I use for the following:
- ripping a cd
- burning a cd
- ripping a dvd
- burning a dvd

Hi,
I am joining a bit late but thought I would chip in anyway...

I really like Sound Juicer for my Music ripping. I like the fact it
supports all kinds of formats, is easy to use, and has a simple layout.

For burning CD and DVD's, I use k3b.

For ripping DVD's I use K9Copy which is in the debian-multimedia repo's.

Hope that helps.
Have fun!

dvd and cd burning and ripping

2008-06-28 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hi,

What tools should I use for the following:
- ripping a cd
- burning a cd
- ripping a dvd
- burning a dvd

I used ripit for ripping a cd, is this a good tool? It seemed to go
quite slow, but was ok.
- Will wodim burn audio cds? Is this the best tool to use?

I ripped a dvd with 'dvdbackup' is this the correct way of ripping a dvd
movie?
Or are there better tools. I ended up with a video_ts folder with lots
of files inside including vob files I could play with mplayer... So is
this how you rip a dvd? If so how can I then burn it to a blank dvd
disk? (So I can watch it on the dvd player on the tv?)

I am blind, so I can only use gtk applications, eg. gnome ones and of
course command line stuff.

Thanks for any help,

hmm .. we are ripping movies, eh? Okay, at risk of getting flamed,
unfortunately you probably will be better off doing this task on
Windows. I hear that Alchohol (or something) is pretty nifty.

A DVD usually has two folder in general, VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS. Google
for these if you want to know the details, but usually you may find only
VIDEO_TS. Conversly, if you have your video data in ./VIDEO_TA, then ./
folder is all you need to burn to make a video DVD. But I haven't done
this often, so please wait for some experts' answer to this.

Isn't k3b qt based (kde)?

Will try the command line one since kde won't speak, perhaps I'll just
need to use a graphical app for this so better start searching.

Well, it is legal, all dvds belong to me, and others are just other
people's home movies...
So, mostly for backing up on other disks and on my hard drive and as I

I don't have or use windows, and I hope to get it working on linux,
since dvdbackup worked nicely, so hopefull there are burning tools just
as good.

No, qt isn't supported yet by a screenreader, so they aren't
accessible. (kde is qt)
I think qt accessibility will be nice though because a lot of apps are
qt...

Thanks for your help.

Yes, it is. For a Gtk based burning application, take a look at Brasero. wodim
is very easy to use, though, and the man page contains examples of most use
cases (including audio files).

Depends on what you want. Is your goal to compress the movie even
further?

Brasero. Choose the Burn Image button, and point it at the
directory above the VIDEO_TS folder,

Yes, it can. That said, whether or not it plays in a DVD player is more a
function of the file creation software than the burning software. So, if you
have files/filesystem images that play in DVD player, the burned DVD will
play.

Yes, genisoimage in debian will create dvd-video iso images which can
then be burnt by wodim. But there is an outstanding bug in genisoimage
that means some standalone players wont play them. My Panasonic DVD
recorder for one :(.

You need to create the dvd-video structure. dvdauthor is the tool from
the command line that does this. Its very simple to get a basic dvd
with no menus, but with some learning you can create very good looking
dvd's.

ripping a dvd I use dvdrip, it rips the dvd then uses transcode to create
a file, mpeg, avi, ogg. I store them on a hard drive, mythtv box, to
view so I haven't burned to dvd any of them. xine is my current favorite
movie viewer.

Try the package (and app) DeVeDe. It only makes simple DVDs, but
does work, and will convert any video type into the correct format.

Good news: there's a check box to indicate if the input format is
VOB/MPEG-PS. That tells DeVeDe not to waste time converting to MPEG.

hmm .. other should correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think you
really need to create the ISO image of a folder containing the VIDEO_TS
folder. Just copying the VIDEO_TS (and the AUDIO_TS if you have that as
well) folder to the DVD should suffice. It has been a little while, but
IIRC that is what I did the few times I did that in the recent past.
