Re: fixing my host name!

Although the scenerio you paint shouldn't be causing a problem, you could
get a permanent hostname through dynip.com (see www.dynip.com). It is a for
$ service but pretty cheap last I checked. No I do not use it (yet) but a
friend of mine does and he is very happy. I understand they have or are at
least working on a Linux port.

Good luck.

Several of my emails are getting returned by the intended receiever's
ISP. The emails are returned with invalid hostname -- *my*
hostname. Since I am currently only using PPP to connect to the 'net,
I have a bogus hostname.

I believe, though, that some mailers reject my name because of spam
filters or whatever. At any rate, what should I change my hostname to
(and how) so that it appears okay for strict mail systems? My ISP IP
is dynamic, so I can't use that (those?).

Help!
Thanks.

dynip does have a linux port, which I will be exploring shortly as I attempt
to put up my ipmasq + portforwarding machine. I'm using the service on
Win95 right now, and it works as advertised. For the dynip.com domain (you
prepend your subdomain) the price is $24.95/year, with a 60-day free trial
first.

Why dont you try www.ml.org. They supply a dynamic IP DNS entry. something
along the lines of: yourhost.dyn.ml.org

And, it's free :) You can use a script in your ip-up.d directory, that
uses lynx, to update the IP address of your box every time you log on.

I use this service, simply so local friends can telnet in to use
more advanced route checking utilities :)

 Good luck.

You're quite right; and the services they offer are far more extensive.
Thanks.

Try www.ddns.org. They don't charge anything, and the whole operation is
based on Linux. The client (that accesses and changes your DNS entry) is
GPL'd as well. They offer several advanced services for $$$, in addition
to the basic dynamic dns service.

I had the same problems too. Many MTA reverse lookup the envelope
sender and reject mails with an unresolvable name.

You could use envelope header rewriting to replace the envelope sender
by your email address. With sendmail you would have to use the
masquerade_envelope feature together with a genericstable.

Look at the sendmail docs or http://www.sendmail.org for details.

Torsten

BTW: Fortunately, I do have a valid hostname right now. Made my
sendmail config much easier to read.
