I'm not sure if I can help with the lack of fading, but as a work around 
the following may help:

Run gconf-editor and add a delay to apps - gnome-screensaver - lock_delay

gnome-screensaver does not fade out

Hello,

i have debian testing with proprietary nvidia driver and gnome
desktop. My problem is when i am inactive for some time screensaver
lock the screen without fade out so i can not stop it. I do not know
what information should i include so if you need some pls tell me.

I will appreciate any answers.
