Steps were alredy pointed out by Alan, what are you missing or what
difficulty are you finding? :-?

I looked into the Gnome manual and it says something about turning the
icons on. The thing is it says it's done under Appearance - Interface
Preferences, but I don't have any such tab under Appearance -- on
neither of the computers. Perhaps I'm lacking some package then?

Most sure the manual needs to be updated to reflect the lack of the
option:

Re: Squeeze: Gnome icons missing

2011-01-12 Thread Zeissmann
I have know desktop but I think where you need to be is

Gnome Menu System Tools (not System) Configuration Editor
 desktop gnome interface buttons_have_icons | menus_have_icons .

If configuration editor isn't there, install gconf2.

Finally I managed to get it to work. But strangely it was a bit different
then you described. First of all I had gconf2 installed. It was gconf-
editor I was missing. Yet still something was different since I could
only run it from the terminal -- there was no menu entry for it. It might
be because I try to keep my Gnome as minimal as possible since I don't
use most of the additional software. So I might still be missing
something but anyway it worked.

Thanks for the help!

That's exactly right. I am not the OP, but I noticed this change between
Lenny and Squeeze and wished to change it back to the way it used to work
in Lenny, but never bothered to try to figure out how. This works perfectly.
Thank you.

IIRC, it was an upstream (GNOME) decision which Debian (as well as other
distributions) also seems to adapt it. I have to admit I fully agree with
that :-)

I turn them on by running gconf2 or the configuration editor and

Yep, that is the way to restore the icons.

Where are GNOME icons?

2006-03-21 Thread Bill Wohler
I'm confused. When I look at

  /usr/share/icons/hicolor/24x24/stock/navigation/stock_left.png

the arrow is blue. However, all the arrows in Galeon, Nautilus, and so
on are green. Looking harder:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:718]$ locate stock_left.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/stock/navigation/stock_left.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/24x24/stock/navigation/stock_left.png
/usr/share/themes/G26/gtk-2.0/stock_left.png
/usr/share/themes/Industrial/gtk-2.0/stock_left.png
/usr/share/themes/Smooth-Winter/gtk-2.0/stock_left.png

All of these are blue too.

I think that the green arrows were in GNOME 1 and that the blue arrows
are in GNOME 2. Right? Then why do I still have green arrows?

I'm using etch with the the Clearlooks theme, as selected by Desktop
Preferences Theme. If I then click on Theme Details, I see that I have
the Clearlooks Controls and GNOME icons.

Given my configuration:

1. What color are the latest GNOME arrows?

2. What directory contains the icons that I'm seeing?

Does anyone have a URL for the definitive current default icon set on
the gnome.org site?

customizing gnome icons on task bars

2004-10-22 Thread H. S.
Given Debian Unstable, can I customize the the appearance of the icons
that appear on the task bar using the 'add applet' (or something
similar) option by right clicking on taskbar?

I am trying to change the icons (or the pop-up labels) of the volume
controls. I have a control for PCM, speaker and headphones. All appear
to be the same. Even the pop up messages that appear when I place the
mouse over the speaker icons say Volume Control. I would like to
modify either the icons or the labels or both. Suggestions?

thanks,

I upgraded to GNOME 2.6 on a sid system earlier this week; all my icons
and themes were there but GNOME wouldn't do anything with them. I don't
remember exactly what fixed it, but look at packages like

  gnome-themes
  gnome-icon-themes

Updating some package, perhaps one of the two above, fixed the problem.
Hopefully, someone else knows the exact fix.

Gnome icons misbehaving

2003-08-28 Thread Alex Malinovich
I'm having quite a strange problem with the icons on Gnome menus. When I
log in using the English language settings everything works just fine.
When I log in using Serbian language settings however, the icons seem to
be off-center and odd sizes. The 'foot' menu icon gets chopped off on
the right and bottom edges. If I use the Nuvola theme, all I get is the
top left corner of the image. Everything still works fine, it just looks
weird. Any ideas where I could start looking to fix the problem?

gnome icons

2000-09-25 Thread Van Buggenhaut
I'm sysadmin for an internet cafe of 20 Potato boxes. We use xdm and
icewm-gnome.

When a client logs in, is there a way to have the icons on the desktop
automatically ? If the client launches gmc, then the icons appear, but that
seems to be too difficult to them. I then had gmc started automatically by xdm
after login, but then the gmc window is also on the desktop (which we don't
want).

How can I get the icons *without* gmc window ?

Please Cc me.
