Okay, link lights are good. Try this to narrow the problem area
down:
- ping each hosts local interface to make sure it's reachable
- if each host can ping it's own interface and you still can't
ping across to the other host:
  - run something like ipgrab on on interface while the other
host pings it
  - if you see the echo requests coming across, and you see the
echo replies going out, then you still have a cable issue
  - if you don't see the echo requests coming across, you still
have a cable issue
- else you need to make sure the local interface is functioning
properly, although I believe you've already done that

I personally haven't had much luck with custom built cables, as
well as cables made by certain manufactures.

You may also try setting the default gw on each host to its own
local interface.

Let us know how it goes...jc

seeing any improvement since the reboot. it's a good idea to post the
particular configs you're talking about. you never know, someone might spot a
typo you missed. what does /etc/network/interfaces look like? btw, don't cc:
to me as i read the list, anyway.

I went back and they did the crossover wiring for me, now i get a green
light on both ends... still cant ping though... and i thought that was
it! I am going to reboot now and see if that affects anything...
currently have eth0 as 10.10.10.2 and 10.10.10.5 respectively on debian
and caldera, netmasks match, /etc/hosts is ok... no idea why i cant
ping! Anyone who followed the thread or just knows what I am talking

wouldn't the cables to used to connect to a modem from a nic be some kind of
crossover cable? if so, there's your problem. you need a straight cable
between the two nic's.

He could buy a crimper and make it a 34'11'' crossover cable :)

I don't have DSL, rather a cable modem, and I need a standard
(straight-thru) cable to go from modem to computer. And, I also
know that you need a cross-over cable to from computer to
computer.

I hope your $25 cable can still be put to good use. :-)

You have to be kiddin' me; i spent $25 on a 35' cable, and stood there
while they made it and tested it... i figured that the cable from NIC
to aDSL modem must be crossover too, since the long (35 footer)
performed the same function when i hooked up either PC to the DSL with
it! Are you SURE that the PC -> aDSL modem uses a straight thru cable?

Hmm, it appears to me that you are not using a cross-over cable
when connecting the two boxes together, indicated by your comment
"i dont get a green light on the cards".

A standard cable as used to connect to the dsl modem is a
straight-thru cable. Host-to_host requires the crossover.

Invest in an ethernet hub to connect everything together, it's
more fun that way.

home network, cant ping box 2

2002-01-27 Thread Shawn Lamson
Hi all -
its that time again (debian mailing list help!)
I set up a second box, with Caldera OL 3.1 and a 3com 3c509b card in
it.
with adsl i can use it to go online fine...
i have 2 NetGear FA 310 cards in my debian box... i can use either card
to
go online... and i have used both of my cables to go online... so
hardware wise all seem to work...
but i cant ping between boxes
Debian
eth0 : 10.10.10.2 mask 255.255.255.0
   also tried
eth0 : 192.168.1.2 mask 255.255.255.0

eth1 : 192.168.1.10 mask 255.255.255.0

Caldera
eth0 : 10.10.10.5 mask 255.255.255.0
   also tried
eth0 : 192.168.1.20 mask 255.255.255.0

of course, i always had "matching" addresses (on the same network).
but i dont get a green light on the cards, and i cant ping!
I re-emphasize that i can connect to the DSL modem with any of the
cards/cables...
Anyone have an idea on what is going on?

Thanks,
Shawn
