Since you are already using /etc/network/interfaces take a look at

man ifup

Especially see ifup eth0=home

On my laptop, the analogue is

ifup eth1=home

because the wireless interface is eth1.

The next suggestion I have *not* tested, but it is also in

man ifup

   -i FILE, --interfaces=FILE
Read interface definitions from FILE instead of from /etc/net-
  work/interfaces.

If this means what it seems to mean, you can write a different file
for each of your configurations, and start ifup with the i option.

ifup is part of the package (in stable) ifupdown.

See also man ifdown.

how to switch between different network configurations?

2007-03-21 Thread Zhengquan Zhang mailing list
I have to switch the network configurations between the lab, the dorm and the
home ones. Normally I manullay edit /etc/network/interfaces and restart the
networking.

Is there any easier and smarter way of doing this?

Thank you!

Try guessnet and related tools, see

Take a look at network-manager. You can switch between different profiles.

IIRC wpasupplicant can handle multiple networks. Just put the different
networks in a conf file, point /etc/network/interfaces to this file and
it *should* do the rest. No need to enter anything unless the keys change.

So if I were to go to an internet cafe, I would need to put that
network's configuration in the conf file as well, wouldn't I? And is
that conf file writable only by root?

Yes, but the OP talked about three different but frequently used
networks, for this I think wpasupplicant would be better.

I'm not sure, but as you can put the conf file anywhere I suppose it may
be possible to put it in home and make it user editable. Untested though :)

There should be no need to edit interfaces every time you want to change
network profiles - there are lots of tools out there to try, or you
could use something a little simpler, such as native debian networking
initialization tools like logical interfaces or scripted interface mapping:
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/ch-gateway.en.html#s-net-reconf

I use mapping for my wireless interface with the Automatic WLAN Picker
Script below for roughly a dozen locations and a fallback for any open
AP - works beautifully:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WiFiHowTo

Kind Regards,
Michael

Packages:
network-manager-gnome / network-manager-kde

Executables:
nm-applet / kdenetworkmanager

You'll need a system tray to be able to use those programs though, if
you're using Window Maker try wmsystray, GNOME/KDE/Xfce have them by
default and I believe Fluxbox has it as well.

In kde, Executables is knetworkmanager

Woops, excuse my mistake on that one. I personally don't use KDE so I
really can't remember much about the week I spent in it.
