Great! Glad to hear it's working.

As John says, it's safe to delete the temp files with the 4 digit
numbers. They're relics of previous failed connection attempts when it
wasn't working.

ppp not working after upgrade to testing(solved)

2001-08-04 Thread Wayne
Hi,
Re my earlier post when I said I could not connect to the internet
even though a PPP session had started, I have managed to solve the
problem. (Of my own making I might add) so I will share this for
future Users.
Whilst doing a dist-upgrade you are asked a question regarding what
network devices you have. The first time I answered this I correctly
entered ppp only, but this is not the default. the script seemed to
hang after this so on re-attempting I foolishly accepted the defaults.
Somewhere in doing this, I managed to configure a slip device (sl0)
which had taken an IP address from who knows where.
After much reading about networks, I tried the 'ifconfig' command. 2
devices were listed. the loopback device, correct I believe, and the
sl0 device. I took this out with 'ifconfig sl0 down' and hey presto,
my ppp connection works again.
I would also like to thank all those who responded to my initial email
with help and advice, cheers guys!

Best Regards

Wayne.

upgrade to testing now ppp not working

2001-08-01 Thread carol

Hi,
Has anyone else had a problem with ppp dial up
after upgrading to testing?
Everything was working fine, now when I use 'PON',
the system dialls and connects fine but then there is no more activity (send or
receive).
I have used pppconfig to make sure the settings
haven't changed. I was using static DNS with Worldonline. The 2 DNS server
address's are in the file /etc/resolv.conf and also in
/etc/ppp/resolv.conf for good measure :)
I also tried changing to dynamic DNS but this did
not work too.
I tried pinging the dns servers but I get no
response and no send or receive activity.
I tried 'plog' and no file exists.
I tried /var/log/ppp-connect-errors and it
was empty
I looked in the archives and someone mentioned the
wrong default gateway but I couldnt find anymore detail.
I am running out of ideas any help please guys
?

Regards

Wayne.

the exact message that appears when i type either pon or pppd is:

Sounds like your ppp module is not loading. What does
cat /proc/modules show. Does it show ppp, does it show any modules
at all. Modules slhc and ppp are necessary for pppd to work.
If you have no modules at all loaded, prehaps kerneld is not
working.

You can try to get these to load by using insmod or modprobe.

Does the kernel version you are using match the directory name in

Unfortunately, that may not be the case. pppd often gets confused by other

I recompiled the kernel and put ppp directly in the kernel(not in a
module like I had before), and it worked fine. Also, I noticed that if
you don't delete zmlinuz.old, zlilo sometimes doesn't install your new
kernel.

ppp not working...

1999-02-03 Thread Kelly Corbin
Question:

I have slink installed, and after upgrading my kernel from 2.0.36 to
2.2.1, my ppp says it is not configured in the kernel or as a module. I
don't know a whole lot about ppp and just use pppconfig to setup my
dialup. When booting, it doesn't say ppp line discipline or whatever
it says anymore either. I have recompiled the kernel with ppp as a
module and directly in the kernel, but neither seems to work. Any
ideas?

PPP not working

1997-08-21 Thread Luka Pravica
Hi,

I am trying to make PPP work. I've read PPP-howto and configured everything
according to it. But I still can't connect to my university server.

The problem is after the serial link is established. Before that, modem
dials the number, my user name and password is sent. Everything seems to be
OK, but then the connectin is terminated.

This is the part of /etc/log/syslog:

...
Aug 20 18:26:07 debian pppd[304]: Serial connection established.
Aug 20 18:26:08 debian pppd[304]: Using interface ppp0
Aug 20 18:26:08 debian pppd[304]: Connect: ppp0 -- /dev/ttyS0
Aug 20 18:26:08 debian pppd[304]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 mru 1500
asyncmap 0x0 magic 0x4d5a6404 pcomp accomp]
Aug 20 18:26:35 debian last message repeated 9 times
Aug 20 18:26:38 debian pppd[304]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Aug 20 18:26:38 debian pppd[304]: Connection terminated.
Aug 20 18:26:38 debian pppd[304]: Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean:
Aug 20 18:26:38 debian pppd[304]: Problem: all had bit 7 set to 0
Aug 20 18:26:38 debian pppd[304]: Exit.

Possibly some configuration is wrong, but which part of it?

Thanks for any info,

Luka

Your pppd doesn't hear anything sensible [lcp conf{ack, nak, req}] from the
other side. It is probably because the line is not 8-bit clean. It might be
the setup of your serial line. I had seen it only with ppp over ssh, where the
ssh escape char wasn't turned off.
The other possible solution is that the other side just don't send anything.
Try the thing by hand from minicom and see what happens. (there are cases
when you really don't see anything without sending a ppp packet, because the
other end is in passive mode).

I _can_ believe it and I don't think it's your fault -- after there is a
directory /etc/ppp all the files _should_ be there, IMO. As it is now, the
configuration of ppp is not easy to understand.

IIRC the new PPP (version 2.3?) has all its scripts in /etc/ppp.
