setting a backround in X

According to a X homepage [http://www.gaijin.com/X/] your supposed to
issue the command 

xv -root -quit [filename of pic.xpm]

however I tried find / -name xv and that program doesn't exist on my
computer, do I have to install another package.  Thanks for your help.

Yes you need the xv package.  It is in non-free.  yuck (-:  if you have
GNOME installed then you can grab electric eyes and do the same thing. 
Or you can install chameleon (it is in Slink).  chameleon will also set
the background of X for you (it too needs GTK).  Hope this helps.

chameleon, electric eyes, or xv will read almost any format.  jpeg, png,
gif, whatever.
