Yes, but remember to select manual partitioning when you install to prevent the installation process to overwritek your home partition. And make a full backup of that partition first in case something goes wrong. What packages would cause me trouble in 64 bit Debian? I have been using 64-bit Debian and Ubuntu systems for a long time and the only thing I cannot do is using my scanner for which there is no opensource driver and only a 32-bit linux driver. I have solved this problem by running a 32-bit system in VirtualBoX so whenever I want to scan, I do it from the 32-bit guest. Then again, I don't use much proprietary apps. I only use the flash plugin, which I get directly from Adobe. I don't use Skype, Acrobat, or other proprietary apps, of which there are no 64-bit versions available. For at least some 32 bit software, you can install 32 bit libraries which will allow you to run them directly. After I installed amd64 Testing, I noticed that I was hearing clicks
after every several seconds on my speakers (as if an electronic switch
was toggling), once on the left and then on the right. I then installed
pulseaudio (and its related packages) and also flash plugin (by
following the painless method given here:
http://wiki.debian.org/FlashPlayer#DebianTesting.27Squeeze.27amd64
), created a file ~/.asoundrc (and a /etc/asound.conf file) with the
following contents:

type pulse

ctl.pulse {
type pulse
}
pcm.!default {
type pulse

ctl.!default {
type pulse
}

rebooted and the clicks were gone, pulseaudio was working as it should
and flashplayer was also chugging along nicely.
Haven't tried skype yet, the other application that I use now and then
that will need a hack to run in 64 bit enviroment (I am trying to
convert all my contact to use ekiga).
