yessir! I'm suspect that i had to use ndiswrapper in the end since that
probably the sign of wrong driver.

I use KNetworkManager and when configuring a new connection, it allows you to
provide static IP information, the the case the network does not use DHCP.
I'm not sure if it shares this information with the rest of the
NetworkManager infrastructure. You can also reconfigure existing connections
to use static IP information by using the Edit Connections dialog.

I use network manager, but wanted to know if there's an manager with
GUI that allows me to configure IPs for each wireless connection.
Using network manager, I need to change my IP address manually each
time I connect in a wireless network that don't give away DHCP

I was just wondering why your tx-power is set Off

with this wireless won't ever work ... I don't know if it's related to the
original question though.

Just thought about it, did you make sure that the original module (the one that
is supposed to be blacklisted) is not loaded? Otherwise it will claim the
wireless card first and it's not ndiswrapper that is in control for the test

That is why wicd doesn't find any wireless networks, if iwlist doesn't work
manually it won't work for wicd, so your problem (apart for what's mentioned
bellow) is enabling scanning on the wireless interface.

Looks from this thread
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=790778
that the driver may be problematic, he recommends using ndiswrapper. see if
that makes iwlist work for you

I typically use wifi-radar for my wireless but tried wicd this weekend

My two problems with wicd (one of them is not an issue at the moment, but it
was)

1. the memory overhead of the client (why python? it's very good for daemons
and such, not very memory efficient)
root 4634 0.2 0.3 89776 7776 ?S00:51 3:23 python
/usr/share/wicd/wicd-daemon.py
root 4975 0.1 0.2 71264 5848 ?S00:51 1:17 python
/usr/share/wicd/monitor.py
micha 5440 0.0 1.1 197904 23068 ?Ss 00:57 0:37 python
/usr/share/wicd/wicd-client.py

2. It doesn't support vpn which network manager does

on the other hand I couldn't find how to manually set an ip with network
manager and the wireless connection was very unstable (very frequent
disconnects requiring wireless system restarts to find the wireless network
again).

So for the moment it's wicd for me (I have the memory to spare at the moment).

I'm using wicd, and generally happy with it.

I tried NetworkManager and noticed it was clumsy and the command-line
interface provided me just about nothing. wicd's commandline interface
is slightly poorer (nothing at all), but it actually works.

did you check that /etc/network/interfaces doesn't mention the wireless
interface?

I was in a LaQuinta hotel recently when that happened to me. Nothing,
and I mean NOTHING, I could do would get the transparent proxy to
finish. It went into a loop and just stayed there, in Konqueror and
Firefox.

Luckily, I had XP through VirtualBox, and while Firefox _also_ failed
in exactly the same way, Internet Exploder was able to inspire the
proxy process to complete itself successfully.

Once the authentication process was completed, the system worked just
fine without needing Windows running.

I'm sure that my later email to LaQuinta on the subject was
intercepted by their spam filter for gross abuse of expletives.

Looks like it's pointing in the right direction. Does it see you wireless when
you open the window (under available wireless connections)

If so, you need to choose your ap click that little triangle by the name, check
automatically connect to this network if you wish and click advanced settings
to setup things like wep password and such.

Some public access points also have a transparent proxy that requires you to
authenticate when you start browsing (my uni is that way, you need to enter a
wpa key and then enter your username/password in the browser before you can
access outside connections).

One thing that needs to be done with wicd is point it at the right wireless
interface. It changes between modules so check what yours creates (ifconfig -a)
and point wicd to the right place (in the gui configuration)

For example for my atheros card the ath5k modules creates wlan0 and madwifi
creates ath0

You can always rely on basic /etc/network/interface and swich manually.

If this does not worrk, kernel or utility may be missing. (In my case
kernel...) I am waiting ...

I also see that. With atheros chip both ath5k and madwifi I see a lot of
disconnects with network manager. wicd is mostly stable although it does lock
up on me every once in a while requiring killing and restarting.

It also allows manually configuring the network address which I haven't found
how to do with network manager and is much more configurable.

On the other hand it's easy to setup a vpn with network manager, didn't see a
way to do it with wicd.

+1 for wicd, with atheros chips (and ath5k driver) and wpa it has

I second wicd and want to note that Debian unstable already have packaged
wicd, so one can just install the deb rather than compiling and installing it

aims to provide a simple interface to connect to networks with a
 wide variety of settings.
 .
 Some of Wicd's features include:
 .
  1. No GNOME dependencies (although it does require GTK+), so it is
easy to use in Xfce, Fluxbox, Openbox, Enlightenment, etc.
  2. Ability to connect to wired and wireless networks
  3. Profiles for each wireless network and wired network
