xdm questions; Startup?
I installed xdm, via XF86Setup; And got the KDE desktop. But I needed to edit the startup files for higher resolution, and now I have xdm running, but no desktop (=Command line). How do I get back to KDE? And/or, where is the desktop selected? If I am on a windowed desktop, I presume that alt-F1 switching does not work? If I understand you correctly and you want to get rid of xdm, my favorite is: dpkg --purge xdm (or gdm etc.) (assuming that you're a stand-alone user or that no one else on your system wants a GUI startup) Then 'startx' works fine. Even better than simply using startx, create a few small script files that execute the startx command after first adjusting your '~/.xsession' file for the session you want to start. Works really well for choosing between a gnome or a regular session without using a GUI logon. :-) John -- Powered by the Penguin
xdm at startup?
I installed xdm on my system. Everything is fine, but at install-time I chose to *NOT* have it start at boot-time. Now I wish to have it invoked automatically at startup. What do I need to do? Also, is there a way to change the default xdm background (i.e. the login screen)? The greyish default is kinda nasty. Thanks! Edit your /etc/X11/config file and change the no-start-xdm to start-xdm. On Sun, 29 Nov 1998, Matt Garman wrote: I installed xdm on my system. So does this mean that you could do something like xscreensaver, and have a groovy animation as your xdm background? that would be way cool :) Matthew -- Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo Steward of the Cambridge Tolkien Society Selwyn College Computer Support http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Chamber/8841/ http://www.cam.ac.uk/CambUniv/Societies/tolkien/ http://pick.sel.cam.ac.uk/
