I'm thinking maybe the problem was with youtube, I had the same problem
and it just went away. What was happening to this system was youtube
would offer to let me download and not play. Now it plays as it should
with no intervention from me.

Thanks for letting us know (I was guessing you had a plugin or extension that
disabled vital Google Javascript).

But I'd never heard of "Youtube Flash Player - HTML5". nor did its name make
any sense, so - fearing you may have been tricked into installing malware - I
went off googling. And now I'm really baffled: it's apparently a "lightweight
Flash player" dedicated to the single task of viewing Youtube videos, for use
when the browser's HTML5 capabilities are not up to the job of running YT's
HTML5 player - but this lightweight Flash player *needs* Adobe's full Flash
Player to be installed in order to work. So what's the advantage of the
lightweight "shim" ???!? You might just as well stick to using the Adobe Flash
Player to both watch YT videos and turn your PC into a playground for Bad Guys
:)

I's be interested in any explanation of this curious situation that anyone may
be able to offer.

Cheers
Nick

Unfortunately not quite true. There are a few benighted sites that

Lucky you. My workplace recently threw TWO new Flash-requiring pages at
us: one of them is an "upgrade" of Kronos which now requires Flash to use
(the old version did not), and the other is an education/training thing
whose name I don't know.

The Flash disease isn't dying out quickly enough. New outbreaks are
still occurring.

Whit, that URL works perfectly for me in firefox 55.0.3-1 amd64 on sid.
The video is displayed with HTML5. Please try clearing your cache and

It looks like you have missing some codecs or libs. Try installing these:
sudo apt-get install libavcodec57 libavcodec-extra57 va-driver-all
vdpau-va-driver

Did you tried or have installed adobe flash player plugin?
Also, tell me about your hardware.

That's ok, that particular video is harmless, so to say:

$ youtube-dl "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_NPEFH-VSQ;
[youtube] W_NPEFH-VSQ: Downloading webpage
[youtube] W_NPEFH-VSQ: Downloading video info webpage

Or, simply run (mpv will run youtube-dl by itself):

mpv "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_NPEFH-VSQ;

No, no -- those are not supposed to work from the browser, but to
download the video, like so:

  youtube-dl "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_NPEFH-VSQ;

Same syntax for cclive, just substituting cclive for youtube-dl.

(I just made up that URL, so download with care or better: don't).

A file appears in your current directory, and you can look at it
at your leisure, with your favourite viewer (ffmpeg, mplayer, vlc,
you name it) instead of being forced to do whatever a badly cobbled-
together javascript "application" running in your browser has
decided to limit you to.

A bit jarring at first, but liberating (as red pills tend to be).

That's definitely better, yes, but to get "the others" (iPhoners and
those (*gasp*) using a dumb phone), Chrome is a pretty neat strategy.

At $WORKPLACE we already had one (mandatory) course on "compliance"
provided by one external company which "runs only on Chrome", and
yes, those @#&%$!* acutally managed to produce some monster which
kinda limped along on Firefox (doing strange things here and there).

I thought the days of "best viewed with Internet Explorer 6" were
over. They're back, and worse than ever.

That's, btw, the main reason for me that I don't touch Chrome unless
with thick gloves.

And that's why things like youtube-dl belong to volatile archive (IMO),
not main one.
Also it's that's why I prefer downloaded youtube-dl to Debian one. One
of those rare exceptions I prefer to make.

It was my impression that what Google *actually* wants is to keep
everyone immersed into Android phone/tablet, not a conventional browser.
Why settling to having user's browsing habits if you can have user's
whole life?

Besides, some of them stop working when youtube changes something:
chances are good that another keeps working. Don't forget that
youtube (aka Google) *desperately wants* to keep you immersed in
the browser to enjoy the whole "experience". So it'll try to
disrupt the few red pills out there from time to time to make
the blue pill (browser, preferably theirs) more palatable and
keep you being part of the Matrix.
