Problems installing wheezy

2013-08-10 Thread Anubhav Yadav
Hello everyone, this is my first post here.
I am facing lot of problems in installing wheezy.

1) I downloaded the dvd-1 image of amd-64 precisely
debian-7.1.0-amd64-DVD-1 for installing wheezy. I checked the md5sum of my
downloaded file and it was the same as of the original. So the image was
verified.

Being a hybrid image, I just ran the following commands to make a bootable
usb stick
   cp debian-7.1.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso /dev/sdc/
   sync

As expected the files were copied to the usb. But when I booted my machine,
it said isolinux missing or something, ie the bootable stick failed.

I then used win32diskimager and it failed too.

After that I used unetbootin which made the usb bootable and the
installation started too, but the installation failed saying the CD-ROM
does not seem to contain a valid release file.

As a last resort trying to install through usb, I used universal usb
installer, which worked. I made all the partition, set all the passwords
and did other settings, but this installation failed too, this time on base
installation step saying that it could not download the following packages.
  liblzma (and two more)
The only reason of mine downloading the dvd image of around 4 gb was to
avoid using internet as I don't have access to Internet at home.

I don't know whats the problem, I have been at it since two days and still
unable to install debian. I will be getting a blank dvd and will try to
burn the image and install it (tomorrow as its 4 am here) Some guys at
#debian said that usb stick never works for installing debian .

2) I was an ubuntu user for the past 4 years and have decided to move on
(thanks to the illogical changes to their vision) and made up my mind to
install debian. As I was very new to installing linux 4 years back, I had
managed to create just one big partition and mounted it as /.
So this time before updating to debian, I moved my /home partition to an
altogether new partition and wanted to mount my /home to this new partition
while installing debian. Now as I was unable to install debian (see #1) I
installed mint, and mounted that new partition as /home. Now that /home
contained a .config folder which is giving many errors at startup on mint,
Will it happen in debian? Should I really backup my /home partition. While
on ubuntu I had compiled many software and libraries in my /home folder
itself. Will they all work again in debian (or mint) or do I need to
install them again? I had also backed up my /home to an external hardisk so
I can just copy paste real important stuff into my new home partition on
debian (or mint) later.

(I was a newbie and didn't new that I should have moved those source files
to a partition like /usr/ or /opt before compiling them)

Thats it, those are the two problems that I am facing as of yet. I do not
want to give up so easily, and I really want to be a part of this
community. Please help me.

Thanks (for not getting annoyed at such a big post)

Thanks a lot greg. Exactly what I wanted to hear. So i have got a backup
of my home in an extern hard disk. I will only copy documents and other
source files.

However the installation problem still holds.

Hello Anubhav. I am new here myself, though a debian user since late
2005. I can't help with your dvd/usb install issue. Hopefully someone
else will be able to. As far as your home partition, I personally tend
not to just take an old home directory, and copy it to home on the new
machine. I call the old home directory old_home for example, and copy
it under the new home directory. Then I go through old_home, and move
from there whatever I want to keep to the new home directory,
verifying that whatever I move isn't going to cause problems.

As far as your custom software, you'll probably need to compile it
again due to newer shared libraries on debian/mint. HTH.

Thanks a lot, I read the documentation and mistook the word mounted for
unmounted.

I will be more careful next time.

One question though, Will the installation still need Internet to continue,
in-spite of having downloaded one dvd?

I'm not sure how it could work at all, device file not being a
directory. Even if it worked, though, it did a wrong thing.

Disk images are to be transferred to disk, not to a file system.

 So,

 1. Do NOT mount the target flash drive. If something asks you
 about that, just click Cancel.

 2. Use the appropriate command to copy the *contents* of the
image file to the medium, *not* the *file* itself. Say, if
dmesg confirms that your device was attached as /dev/sdc, do

 cat debian-7.1.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso /dev/sdc

This may be not the optimal way to do this, but would work as
expected. Unless, that is, you're trying to create a bootable
DVD, in which case growisofs is the way to go.

Anyway, please do read the Installation Guide before proceeding.
There may be more problems ahead if you don't.

Maybe. Maybe not. It's all about UID mapping, and there are
no rules cut in stone for this.

Anyone's guess. While I've been using some self-compiled binaries
since Debian Woody, some other things might get broken.

Whether they work or not, keeping binaries in /home is a very, very
bad habit. /usr/local is the place.

Thanks a lot, I am finally able to install debian using a bootable USB,
just had to leave the stick unmounted before attempting to copy the
contents of the iso.

I also read the whole documentation regarding installing debian for my
architecture, and it really helped. It took me two hours though!

And I also deleted my home partition and created a fresh system, and will
use my backup to restore things that I need.

That said, I am ready to power up my machine. Thanks again.

Ah, yes I am writing this mail on my fresh wheezy!!

Some post-installation questions,

1) The desktop seems to be unusable, no icons on the desktop and I cannot
right click onto it. Or it normal? Is there a setting to unlock the
desktop? or is something wrong with the installation?

2) Now I have downloaded the dvd-iso-1 and installed debain, I will be
downloading the other too dvds too this week. If I am not connected to the
Internet and I have these iso*s* will I be able to install other packages
using them? Else I will skip downloading them.

Thanks again! Feels great!

How to use the debian installation iso for installing packages using aptitude

2013-08-12 Thread Anubhav Yadav
Greetings all.

This is what I am trying to do.

I have the three dvd iso of debian. I installed debian without
internet connection using the first iso image. Now I want to use these
iso files to download and installing any packages that can be done
through aptitude without using interent. I have internet but I want it
to be second preference.

This is what I managed to do until now:

1) I created a folder name dvd1-mountpoint in my /home folder

2) Next I mounted the iso using the command
mount path/to/iso dvd1-mountpoint/ -o loop

3) Next I created a symbolic link to the mounted folder in the /media folder
ln -s dvd1-mountpoint/ /media/apt1

4) Then i ran the following command
apt-cdrom -d=/media/apt1/ add

I got the following output

root@Innovator:/home/neo1691# apt-cdrom -d=/media/apt1 add

Using CD-ROM mount point /media/cdrom/
Identifying.. [d4c7effe2075e9ba0b4db99a257fba65-2]
Scanning disc for index files..
Found 0 package indexes, 0 source indexes, 0 translation indexes and 0
signatures
W: Failed to mount '/dev/sr0' to '/media/cdrom/'
E: Unable to locate any package files, perhaps this is not a Debian
Disc or the wrong architecture?

Any help? I want to say some bandwidth as it is not cheap here, and is very slow

Thanks!

dvd1-mountpoint is a folder where I mount the iso and /media/apt1 is a
symbolic link to dvd1-mountpoint.

So now what I will do is I will just mount the iso directly into

 Can you find this file?

Well I can find the directory wheezy but inside that there are only two
directories called contrib and main
I guess thats the problem!

cd around into those directories, and make sure the directory that you
find the file Packages in is correct.

Sometimes, the problem is, that you will find file Packages.gz, but no
 Packages.
Or may be the other way around. I have had a problem like this in the
past, and I don't know why - but I use debmirror.

I find debmirror pretty good - to start, I copied DVD set into one
directory. Then to an update from debian security archive (ie
minimal) and include option --no-delete (or whatever its called).
That could be a quick way to create a reasonable single local repo.
That's what I have done (but I update every month or more at a
 friend's place).

You can use apt-cdrom to install just a few packages, like debmirror.

In fact years ago I used to use apt-mirror (was written or maintained
by Herbert Xu I think), which is a great little toolbox for
maintaining a local mirror, create a quick-and-dirty local index etc.
Probably easier for you, but so long ago I can't remember the commands
 I used any more sorry.

And finally, for the SIMPLEST quick-and-dirty local repo:
 dpkg-scanpackages . /dev/null | gzip - Packages.gz

Then just make sure Packages.gz is found by apt - can't remember how
this would work - a flat file? - or just put it in the above location
(where you got file not found error).

 Hard to beat a one-line command :)

Can you please explain me more about debmirror, will it solve what I am
trying to achieve here?

 Good luck
 Zenaan

Re: How to use the debian installation iso for installing packages using aptitude

2013-08-14 Thread Anubhav Yadav
I am still getting used to handling mailing list from Gmail. Pretty hard
with the new ui of Gmail.

Anyways tried genisoimage and it worked.

The only problem was I needed to search what I wanted to download.

Now I have to do the same with the other two dvds.
And then I have to make a provision that these disks get auto mounted at
startup.

Re: How to use the debian installation iso for installing packages using aptitude

2013-08-14 Thread Anubhav Yadav
It's working nicely (atleast for the first DVD). Now since I have added the
entry in the fstab file, will it get auto mounted on startup?

Re: How to use the debian installation iso for installing packages using aptitude

mount -a isn't mounting /media/dvd1-mountpoint

Re: How to use the debian installation iso for installing packages using aptitude

2013-08-15 Thread Anubhav Yadav
I got it, but I thought before that adding entry to fstab and automounting
at boot are not related to each other.

I restarted but I had to mount all the three iso manually.

mount -a won't work too.

So I did suck it :-)

They are exactly related to each other. The /etc/fstab file defines
what file systems are mounted at boot time.

I restarted but I had to mount all the three iso manually.
 mount -a won't work too.
So I did suck it :-)

Then something is wrong with the listings in your /etc/fstab file.
But previously I gave you a test for it and you said that worked. So
the line must be syntactically correct and is mounting the right file
 system.

Do you have noauto there? That is the only thing that makes sense.
Remove it. Look for a noauto option and remove it.

   $ man fstab
   ...
noauto do not mount when mount -a is given (e.g., at boot time)
   ...

yes it is noauto

What options do you have? For mounting an iso you probably only want
loop and ro and no other options.

This is what I have in my fstab

/media/dvd1-mountpoint iso9660 loop,ro,user,noauto 00

also one more thing, when I try to install any package, it says the

Yes it worked now. It will automount at boot now. Thanks.

also one more thing, when I try to install any package, it says the

When you upgraded to Wheezy did you not upgrade debian-archive-keyring?
That package contains the key. Verify that it is up to date. Upgrade
it if needed. Then run apt-get update again.

   $ apt-cache policy debian-archive-keyring
   debian-archive-keyring:
 Installed: 2012.4
 Candidate: 2012.4
 Version table:
*** 2012.4 0
   500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy/main i386 Packages
   100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Upgrade it if needed. Find the deb file in your mounted iso image.

   # find /media/dvd-mountpoint1 -name 'debian-archive-keyring_*_all.deb'

/media/dvd-mountpoint1/pool/main/d/debian-archive-keyring/debian-archive-keyring_2012.4_all.deb

 Install it by that path.

   # dpkg -i
/media/dvd-mountpoint1/pool/main/d/debian-archive-keyring/debian-archive-keyring_2012.4_all.deb

Then update again to clear the error.

   # apt-get update

After that you should not be getting that authentication error again.
Because the keyring will be installed authorizing them.

I did the above steps found the deb installed it and ran apt-get update,
but the warning still stays.

Running $ apt-cache policy debian-archive-keyring gives them same output as
it gives for you

I guess only this is remaining everything else seems to be sorted out.

Just a small update.

I uncommented out everything in sources.list so all my offline and
online repositories are enabled.

Ran apt-get update

Commented out only my dvd-mountpoints, so no offline repository.

Ran apt-key update

Gave me the following output

gpg: key 46925553: Debian Archive Automatic Signing Key (7.0/wheezy)

After that I tried installing a package with apt-get (with my offline
repository disabled) and the warning that was coming before (the
packages could not be authenticated, do you want to continue or not?)
was not there.

Okay, so now I commented out all online repositories and uncommented
out the offline repos (the iso files)

The warning was back.

Also if I have all the repos enabled, the package gets installed from
the online repos! Which is not what is required!

Re: How to use the debian installation iso for installing packages using aptitude

2013-08-18 Thread Anubhav Yadav

OK, So because of that I'm guessing you need an entry like:
gpg: key cxdfddey: Local Repository Key
 blah blah blah.

So following the adage -- teach a man to fish ...

Googling how to authenticate a local repository Debian
(leave off the quotes in the search box.)

 Returns, e.g.:

 http://blog.jonliv.es/2011/04/26/creating-your-own-signed-apt-repository-and-debian-packages/

Another way is to just cut'n'paste the error/warning/ message into
 google.

Thanks a lot for your help, the links you sent me all contain how to sign
your own repository that you make for your own packages. Here I am using
the debian repository. So I guess I will need to sign them with the
official key. Where can I find that key?

Also if I generate my own gpg key and sign the repository using that key,
will it get authenticated?

Just the last piece of the puzzle!

That would of course defeat the purpose of having an official key, if
 anyone could sign packages officially.

 Your key only.

I found a key on this page?
Can you help me now, by telling me how to add that particular key into my

I have mounted the iso in /media/dvd1-mountpoint/

Hotspot script not working

2013-09-02 Thread Anubhav Yadav
Hello List,

I used to make use of this script extensively when I was using ubuntu.
It used to work perfectly out-of-the-box.

But on debian when I start the script, it runs without any error, but
the hotspot is never shown on my mobile.

When I restart the script, I get this error message:

Restarting Wireless Hotspot...

The script is here http://paste.debian.net/33549/

And I downloaded the script here:

VLAN IDs can only be numeric and I don't think you've got a mon

I *also* can't find any other mention of mon. in that file. It's
possible one of the commands it calls creates such an interface (I'm not
familiar with hostapd or dnsmasq), so check how they work first. But you
might get away with just commenting out line 253 :)

I commented out the line, the error won't come, but still the hotspot is

Erm... What's the point of mounting the whole disk when you seem to
already know that it's going to fail? If you just need to get the kernel
to read the partition table, then try hdparm -z /dev/sdb

Teaching people to do something that you expect to result in an error
seems a bad idea to me.

then
# mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt

Well,
The point is when I select MTP on my android phone when I connect it to
laptop, and debian mounts android. But all folders that are there in my
phone are not seen in the explorer.

Whereas if I connect the android phone to windows it shows all my
files.

Only 10 folders are seen on debian, whereas there are many others!

Hello
May I suggest trying to google for using debian as an ad-hoc wifi /
hotspot / whatever you want to call it, since it may just be easier to
do that rather than porting/debugging that script?

I was able to find quite a few guides, even on wiki.debian.org.

Good luck!

I will quote a line from where I downloaded the script

Ubuntu lets you easily create a wireless hotspot by using the Network
Manager, but it uses an ad hoc network and most Android and Windows
Phone devices can't connect to such networks.

But still I will give it a try!

In that case I'm stumped. Sorry I can't help you any further.

I think, as someone mentioned above, that MTP is only used to transfer
files that contain media. So maybe thats the reason that its not

will report if all files are visible there or not.

tri-boot debian, debian-without-dm, and windows with newer debian using partitions from older debian?

You shoud never share /usr unless your two installations have the exact
same set of packages installed. The same applies to /var.

/tmp may be shared freely as long as you don't suspend one OS to disk.

/home is not a problem as long as you don't mix stable and testing or
unstable. Many programs save their settings there and may upgrade their
config file format without notice. Older versions may not be able to
 read this.

Forcing yourself to do something is a matter of self-discipline and
attitude. Debian doesn't have packages for instilling those
qualitities.
:)

This made my day :)

Create two users. One for the undisciplined Anubhav and the other for
his aspiring self. Switching to the console with CTRL+ALT+F2 gives the
second user the opportunity to log in

Or maybe just logging using the same user after switching to console
with CTRL+ALT+F2. But yes, instead of installing a new version of debian
just to use the console, this seems more feasible!

Possible bug in iceweasel, can somebody please verify!

2013-09-26 Thread Anubhav Yadav
Hello list,

I am using debian wheezy 7.1 stable, 64 bit and was previously using
google-chrome. But whenever I opened a new tab on chrome debian used to
freeze, (or I should say X used to freeze). I didn't had much time to
debug, so I removed it and switched to iceweasel which came with
debian.

Now, there is an extension for firefox called buffer, and I installed
it, but it never showed on iceweasel. Can somebody please confirm this?
Here is the link to install buffer extension
(http://bufferapp.com/extensions)

I tried to report this bug using reportbug program, but reportbug says
that there is a new version of iceweasel in unstable. Should I install
packages from unstable?

I want to install firefox, but I don't see any official mozilla
repository for debian.

I was a chrome user for a long time, but the freezes on debian forced me
to switch to iceweasel. I also tried disabling the pepperflash plugin
for chrome.

I tried installing the latest VLC (2.1.0) from the backports repository
apt-get -t wheezy-backports install vlc

So I uninstalled the fglrx drivers and I was able to boot back on gnome.
But now the laptop is getting heated and its fan is always noise. The same
does not happens on my windows partition.

The laptop is Dell Latitude N5010 with ati Raedon HD 5400 graphics card.

Can somebody help me in this case? Should I upgrade my kernel and install

PXE install, without internet?

2014-01-11 Thread Anubhav Yadav
Hey folks,
I managed to convince my staff to switch to debian from windoze, and they
agreed. So I managed to install a PXE server and successfully booted debian
installer simultaneously on 20 machines using dhcp server.

But they required an active internet connection to fetch packages over a
mirror, and the bandwidth was very low, so at then end of the day, only one
PC was able to set up.

So is there a way to boot an entire 4gb dvd-iso from a server, so that I
can install it on PC connected on a network??

Thanks!

Yes, it should be a perfect option, given the fact that students can

Only one question. Suppose I want to update my packages, then should I
update my ftp mirror once a week, or should I update it from an

Thanks for replying Scott, appreciated your time and effort.

If I do apt-cdrom add, It will look for the cd-rom right, not the iso.
So I'll first need to mount the iso somewhere and tweak the
sources.list to point to a file, rather than a dvd.

And yes, one box is already ready with debian 7 32 bits, which is also
a PXE server and I'll be now using the same server to install 64 bit

If the machines are all the same hardware, you might additionally try other
 ways. Just ideas:

 1. FAI (see http://fai-project.org) - just create a FAI-DVD and you can
install every machine with it. More DVD's mean faster installation.

 2. Try clonezilla, once you setup the first PC, you can create more images and
 install via multicasting.

 3. You might also try to run rsync in combination with a livefilesystem to get
access to the harddrive of the target.

 4. And of course, try DRBL, which sets up a cloneserver.

 As I said, just ideas

 Have fun!

 Hans

Re: Re: PXE install, without internet?

2014-01-15 Thread Anubhav Yadav
I installed apt-cacher-ng:

I did the following:

1) Mounted my debian iso on /media/iso1/

2) Tweaked my sources.list as
deb file:/media/iso1/ wheezy main contrib
(just in case)

3) And made changes in fstab to auto mount the iso.

4) created a symlynk to the pool folder in the iso to
/var/cache/apt-cacher-ng/_import/

I did all the above on a 32 bit debian 7 box, pre configured with PXE server.

Now, when I run import from apt-cacher-ng web interface I get the
following errors:

No index files detected. Unable to continue, cannot map files to
internal locations.

Apparantly I thought running apt-get update from the iso should solve
problems, but apt-get update fails as I have 64bit repository and the
server has 32 bit debian installed on the server.

Last step and I am through!

Cannot import packages from debian iso to apt-cacher-ng

2014-01-19 Thread Anubhav Yadav
I installed a 32 bit Debian Wheezy on a PC (One PC in a lab of 24 computers).
I made it a dhcp PXE server with netboot images of Debian 7 32 bits.
It worked perfectly and all the 20 computers booted from network with
the debian installer.

The only problem was that all the packages had to be retrieved from
the internet and bandwidth was a problem. So only one computer could
be properly installed.

So I tried to look for solutions on how to completely boot the 4.3 GB
iso from the network, bypassing the internet mirrors completely. I
asked a question on the debian user lists and was greeted with many
solutions, among them was the apt-cacher-ng.

So now I wanted to install 64 bit machines on the same lab, and the 32
bit server being the PXE server.

So I installed the apt-cacher-ng package. All was set up.

I mounted my iso file to a location, and created a symlink of the
/pool folder to /var/cache/apt-cacher-ng/_import folder.

Next I went to localhost:3142/acng-report.html and ran import and it
gave me the following error:

Maintenance task (File Import), apt-cacher-ng version: 0.7.11 (Cancel)
Importing from /var/cache/apt-cacher-ng/_import directory.
Scanning local files...
Scanning, found 1 file...
Scanning, found 2 files...
Scanning, found 4 files...
Scanning, found 8 files...
Scanning, found 16 files...
Scanning, found 32 files...
Scanning, found 64 files...
Scanning, found 128 files...
Scanning, found 256 files...
Scanning, found 512 files...
Scanning, found 1024 files...
Scanning, found 2048 files...
No index files detected. Unable to continue, cannot map files to
internal locations.

So I went ahead and tried to grasp the HOWTO for importing from iso,
and it mentioned that you need to run apt-get update before importing
the packages.

Now since I wanted to cache all the 64 bits packages from the iso, I
tweaked my sources.list to point to iso (The hyperlink is a method
given by me on how to use iso's as apt-get repository).

Now when I ran apt-get update it gave me an error that no i386
packages found (made sense since I was running it on 32 bits server,
and looking for amd64 packages).

So as a test, I installed apt-cacher-ng on my laptop running 64 bits
debian, and it gave me the same index error.

I even tried manually copying *deb packages from
/var/cache/apt/archives to /var/cache/apt-cacher-ng/_import folder,
but again same error!

I also tried importing packages from official repositories and again it failed.

I am no champion of linux, nor of networking. I am just a student,
trying to learn linux as much as he can, by asking his college to
shift from windows to linux, and in the process learning the
fundamentals of networking and linux.

Any ideas?

Re: Cannot import packages from debian iso to apt-cacher-ng

2014-01-19 Thread Anubhav Yadav
Then I recommend taking the easy way out. Just install one machine
using apt-cacher-ng as a proxy. Then all of the packages will be
ready for the next machine. Install the rest using the proxy and they
will use the already downloaded files. It is simple. It works.

Was it so easy. How did I miss it. So that means I need to set up the
PXE server, install apt-cacher-ng using that server, then install a
client again using that server and apt-cacher-ng will then be ready
for the next machines!! :)

Re: Cannot import packages from debian iso to apt-cacher-ng

2014-01-23 Thread Anubhav Yadav
Can anyone please rectify me. I have got some weird doubts.

I have set up a PXE boot server. It has a forder /srv/tftp and it has
all the required files for PXE install.

I have also installed apt-cacher-ng on that PXE server. And that PXE
server is also acting as a local DHCP server.

So now, what should I do?

1) I should first do this on the PXE server

echo Acquire::http { Proxy http://localhost:3142;;; };
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/90proxy
and then I should install one client using my bootable usb. But then
how will apt-cacher import all packages from that client?

2) Or instead of step 1 above, should I first mount all the three iso
on the PXE server, create a symlink to the /pool folder to
/var/cache/apt-cacher-ng/_import
and then import packages?

But the above method fails! Don't know why!

What I want to do is when I boot the other computers via network, (ie
the boot from tftp on my PXE server) I want them to download all

When I get on the network mirror page on the installation of client, I
try the following

http://{PXE_IP_Address}:3142

but it just won't work.

I have also been advised to use a proxy in the preseed.cfg. However I
am not using any preseed file. My directory listing of tftp folder is

Didn't we have a recent thread about this? I seem to remember that there
might be a bug in the current installer, and you have to escape the
installer process at that point. Then, enter a shell and edit the file
/etc/apt.conf.d/proxy (this is now on the to-be-installed machine) to point
to your apt-cacher. Exit shell, back to the installer, and live happily
ever after :-)

Just now left from my college. This is the first thing I'll do on Tuesday.

Just a question. Will this work now for both bootable USB and PXEA server
methods.

I have also been advised to use a proxy in the preseed.cfg.

And? Wasn't that good advice? From
http://www.debian.org/releases/wheezy/example-preseed.txt

 d-i mirror/http/directory string /debian
 d-i mirror/http/proxy string

Dont know why, i am afraid of preeseeding as of now. I should gice that a
try.

I exited to shell and created the directory apt.conf.d in /etc and put

Re: PXE install, without internet?

2014-01-28 Thread Anubhav Yadav
It can't work as the snippet name is in the wrong format

The correct snippet name is /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/NNproxy
where NN is a number e.g.:-
 /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/90proxy

Make sure you use the ip address not the server name

I did the above. When I come to the page where I am supposed to select
a mirror I execute a shell, create the required directory and put the above
line it it.

Next I go back to the miror page, select any mirror on the installer and
then
leave the proxy blank.

Yet all the packages and release files seems to be downloading from the
internet!

Thanks for your time and and effort. Appreciated.

Re: PXE install, without internet?

2014-01-28 Thread Anubhav Yadav
Okay, Thanks for everything guys!! But still I am not able to get this work.

So is what I am trying to do:

Case I : Without Preseed:

I boot from the PXE server. I go to the mirror selection page on the
debian installer.
I execute a shell. I create the directories
#mkdir -p /etc/apt/apt.conf.d

then using the nano editor: I write the following line.

Acquire::http { Proxy http://172.16.4.104:3142/;; };

I have also tried this syntax ( as suggested by Klaus)
Acquire::http::Proxy http://172.16.4.104:3142/;;

Still it downloads all the packages and the release files from the internet.

Yes on my server where apt-cacher-ng is installed, all packages have
been successfully imported from the iso.
I can confirm it as I have installed many packages from cacher from an
pre installed debian client. Works like a charm.

Now Case II:- With preseed:

1) I got the example pressed file from debian.org.Here is a link to
it. http://paste.debian.net/78953/

More specifically I have this as my repositories in preseed:

### Mirror settings
# If you select ftp, the mirror/country string does not need to be set.
#d-i mirror/protocol string ftp
d-i mirror/country string manual
d-i mirror/http/hostname string http.us.debian.org
d-i mirror/http/directory string /debian
d-i mirror/http/proxy http://172.16.4.104:3142

Now I have saved the above in /var/www/ and this is my entry in
/srv/tftp/pxelinux.cfg/default file

# D-I config version 2.0
include debian-installer/amd64/boot-screens/menu.cfg
default debian-installer/amd64/boot-screens/vesamenu.c32
prompt 0
timeout 0

label amd64
kernel debian-installer/amd64/linux
append vga=normal initrd=debian-installer/amd64/initrd.gz
netcfg/choose_interface=eth0 domain=WORKGROUP
debian-installer/country=IN debian-installer/language=en
auto-install/enable=false preseed/url=http://172.16.4.104/preseed.cfg
DEBCONF_DEBUG=5 -- quiet

When I boot a client from tftp, and I select the amd64 label on the
installer, many pages on the installer are skipped. Yet the packages
are downloaded from the internet.

I know I am little persistent, maybe I am missing something, but I
feel I am almost there. I apologize if you guys feel that I am doing
my research properly, or I am asking too noob questions. I just don't
know why I am doing this, this thing is not in my syllabus, I am not
supposed to do this, I am not getting paid for this, but still, I just
want to get it to work!

Please help!

Re: PXE install, without internet?

2014-01-29 Thread Anubhav Yadav
 NO. Stop there! :)

Don't open a shell. Just proceed to the next step in the installer and
enter the proxy information as asked.

The Debian installer will do all that for you.

Somebody above mentioned that there is a bug in the debian installer
and you need to manually give the proxy.
If not what am I supposed to enter there.
First page on the proxy says that if you need a proxy to access the
outside world.
The format on this page is
http://[user][:pass]@host[:port]/;

So I gave http://172.16.4.104:3142/ # I never gave the trailing / before
and now its working. Feels great to see the packages retrieved at the
speed of light.

Now if I use this as preseed string will it work?

### Mirror settings
# If you select ftp, the mirror/country string does not need to be set.
#d-i mirror/protocol string ftp
d-i mirror/country string manual
d-i mirror/http/hostname string http.us.debian.org
d-i mirror/http/directory string /debian
d-i mirror/http/proxy http://172.16.4.104:3142/ #This line?

###

It should work right?

Now I ran into some other problems. Only a few computers are able to
find the PXE server
Not all.
Is there a limit on the number of machines that can be installed at a
time using a PXE server?

Thanks for all your support! I finally got the apt-cacher-ng part working.

Fwd: PXE install, without internet?

2014-01-29 Thread Anubhav Yadav
[frwding to the liist, sent by mistake only to Scott]

Thanks for everything. I have observed that a few packages are being downloaded
from the internet. They maybe the security packages and updates released after
package the iso. ( I have imported the packages from the iso )

Now taking all this to a new level, is there a way to mirror official
debian ftp repositories
like debian main, debian security, debian updates etc on the
apt-cacher-ng database,
and maybe update those repositories once twenty days?

 Leave the slash off e.g.:-
 d-i mirror/http/proxy http://172.16.4.104:3142

 ###

 It should work right?

 Now it will :)

I will test the preseed and let you know whether its working or not!
I am taking some days off from the college for a well deserved holiday.

TFTP doesn't handle more than about 100 simultaneous installations - the
solution there is to use GPXE (which also allows greater flexibility
with the location of the server) - and use http instead of tftp. For
more than 1000 simultaneous installs I'd suggest GPXE with http via slamd.

There are only 20 PCs in the lab that I am trying to manage.
So that shouldn't be a problem right?

When I boot the PCs and escape to boot menu, I select network from
list of devices to boot
from and after the PC stucks on finding the PXE server.

When I try to restart the tfpt-hpa service from the service, the
service never starts sometimes.

I am not able to find out the real pattern as to when the tftp server
stops working.

Sometimes just restarting the isc-dhcp-server service on the server
will solver the issue, and sometimes
restarting the dhcp service wont help.

Thanks for all your support! I finally got the apt-cacher-ng part working.

I love apt-cacher-ng (we're just good friends, 'really'). Apt-cacher and
squid are also good for the same thing - but apt-cacher-ng has much
lower resource requirements. Glad to hear it's all working for you. When
it comes to administering all those boxes you might also find Steve
 Kemps debian-admin site interesting:-
 http://debian-administration.org/

Thanks for the website, maybe one day I will be telnet-ing or ssh-ing
to the same PXE
server that I have setup and will be installing so many packages
together on so many machines at the same
time right from my bed. :)

No. Probably a DNS problem, alt+f4 in the affected installation to see
 where the error is.

 I've seen the problem but don't recall a specific cause - I also don't
know your DNS, PXE and TFTP server setup. I generally use an IPCop
Firewall and DNS, with PXE and TFTP on a separate (VirtualBox) machine,
so my experience may not translate.

I will be back next monday or tuesday.
For starters I installed the server packages from this guide.
http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-debian-wheezy-apache2-bind-dovecot-ispconfig-3

And the dns and tftp configurations was done using this guide.
http://www.howtoforge.com/setting-up-a-pxe-install-server-for-multiple-linux-distributions-on-debian-lenny

And finally placed the tftp boot files in the directory as specified
in the official debian guide.
https://wiki.debian.org/PXEBootInstall#Set_up_TFTP_server

As soon as I reach my college the first thing I will do is share my
/etc/networking/interfaces files to
show how I have set up my server.

And thanks for the kind words. Appreciated everyone efforts.

The above is exact output of the prompt.

and here's is my tftp configuration: /etc/default/tftpd-hpa

TFTP_USERNAME=tftp
TFTP_DIRECTORY=/srv/tftp

In case it's an issue with insufficient free dhcp leases, on the box
 with the dhcp server try:-
(for isc-dhcp-server) cat /var/lib/dhcpd.leases and compare that against
the number available in your settings

No such file or directory. Maybe because I am using isc-dhcp-server, not dhcp3?

 also:-
 service dhcpd restart
It was service isc-dhcp-service on my box, it restarted, but the other
clients were not able to

Then try booting the PXE clients again.
Same result, unable to find the PXE server.

 At the DHCP server (first)?

 Please post:-
 /etc/dhcpd.conf
 /etc/default/dhcp3-server

Right now away from my colleges, but I feel the requested files wont
be available on the server since I am using isc-dhcp-server and not dhcp3.
Just a thought. I will post the required files as soon as I reach the lab again.

Indeed (easy), I had to look at that for a bit. That's 11 host bits,
 not 3 (255.255.255.248) giving 2048 addresses - which 'may' make a
difference. From 1st coffee of the day memory (dodgy) that's a class B
 instead of a C.

Thanks for the pointer, a full refund is on it's way to the OP now.

I can't explain more on why I choose the combination of the above IP addresses
because those were given by my administrator. I will ask him some questions on
what network is that, and maybe then we can find out how is that
conflicting with
the dhcp server that I have built.

Also just wanted to say that the guys at our college has something called
cyberoam filter, which also acts as a dhcp server, but now the dhcp
server is disabled.

I also want to make a small confession, that although there was a
small introductory
course last year on computer networks, but I am sure a super noob in
these IPs and subnet things.

About to format the whole laptop, need some partitioning advice.

2014-02-04 Thread Anubhav Yadav
Hello list,

I have an Asus laptop, with 720 gigs hardisk and i5 processor.
Right now I have a dual boot of Windoze (only for playing fifa
and assassins creed) and debian wheezy 64 bit.

Debian takes a lots of time for booting up and some folks on irc
said that I should be trying systemd. I did that but there was no
improvement. So some people also suggested that my partitions
are somehow not right.

So now since I am about to partition I would like to know what should
be the ideal partitioning scheme.

Here is the screenshot of my current partitions.
http://i.imgur.com/YI4a1oU.png

There was a tool which gave the read-write speeds of my hdd,
that was mentioned by the guys in irc, I cant remember now, and
the speeds were very low.

So these are the questions:

1) What partitioning scheme should I choose now, If I want to have
/home, /var, /usr, /tmp on different partitions and I just want a windoze
partition of 50-60 gb.

2) As you can see in the screenshot, gparted shows that the hdd is
only 698 gb whereas when purchased it was 720 GB. Any ways to recover
the lost sectors back?

Please pardon me If I am not allowed to post link to images!

Re: About to format the whole laptop, need some partitioning advice.

2014-02-04 Thread Anubhav Yadav
I used to use multiple partitions as you do.

Nowadays, the only partitions I use are:
 /boot - about 1GiB
/ - root partition, the rest
This way, it's really simple, and the old reasons (for most home users
at least) for having multiple partitions are no longer valid (separate
backups, making sure /root does not fill up, etc), since the HDDs are
 so capacious.

But then I assumed that having all in different partitons helped at the
time of upgrade? Please prove me wrong.

Sounds like you might have some other problem though. Your current
partition setup should not be a _performance_ problem as far as I can
tell, although I would consider it a disk flexibility problem for
 sure.

If you really want multiple partitions (besides a separate /boot) then
LVM is your friend - and it future or if you're adventurous, BTRFS
 instead.
The HDD I have in my laptop has somewhat low rpms, maybe that's
the issue?
Its a sata HDD with 5400 rpms!

But WHY do you want them on separate partitions? XY problem?

Already answered you above.

Assumptions cannot necessarily be proven wrong.

Please prove your assumption is right. If you attempt to do this, you
will find your assumption is wrong.

Also: How do you do upgrade on Debian?
Answer this, and you will also prove yourself wrong.

So, the job of proving is for the student :)

Sounds like you might have some other problem though. Your current

Its a sata HDD with 5400 rpms!

I dunno - may be you used to use a Dekstop with SSD.
Why do you say it is slow?

Because when my computer boots up, it takes like 25 seconds more
to get started after entering the username and password. That is 25 seconds
of more wait after logging in.

But WHY do you want them on separate partitions? XY problem?

 Already answered you above.

My suggestions/questions are to assist you to find your own answers.

If you can't answer the why you want separate partitions, with
knowledge and/ or experience, then you are making an assumption, and
may be you are better to accept someone else's assumption or
 experience...

May be you read something, but you didn't say, so can't help you further
 sorry.

If I messed up my system and want to restore back to a clean state, I can keep
my /home intact? And maybe preserve the data? Not everybody has access
to portable
HDDs for backup, do they?

 The slowness you've been
noticing, as people have pointed out, may be due do GNOME and
whichever start-up proggies it has. I'd recommend LXDE, XFCE or
 fluxbox instead of awesome though.

I have tried xfce and I believe that its a great great desktop environment,
However I am restricted in using that for a couple of reasons.
1) It does not seem to have a good network manager.
the network manager in gnome lets us define some profiles for different
networks and you can switch them easily.

For eg I have a static IP address at home and DHCP at my college.
In gnome I can make two profiles for both and switch them on the fly.
XFCE has that?

Thunar is a great browser but it lacks in tabbed browsing.
I cannot open tabs in thunar.
Also it does not have a network bookmark on the left pane
to browse the network.
Nautlus is great but then why do I install gnome dependency on xfce?

Network Manager isn't good, it's bad, however if you like it, you can
use it with Xfce too and don't worry about installing GNOME
dependencies, since Xfce is based on much GNOME stuff. Regarding to
Thunar vs Nautlius, note that if you install all that automatic crap,
than Thunar anyway will use GNOME Virtual File System. Xfce is based on
GTK too. IOW you could use Natilus with Xfce and don't need to worry
about too much extra dependencies, but you still could benefit from the
advantages that Xfce has got over GNOME.

Thats why I have been thinking that why not use a minimal window
manager like awesome or i3?

Defining desktop is the tricky bit (to some it only means where the
box sits). In this instance I've assumed the OP means office apps, bit
of gaming, internet apps - so I'd go go for a two slice setup, with a
separate / and /home, with and a swap file. For a similar desktop in a
business environment it'd be SOE rules so I would use more partitions
(backup and rollout planning would be a nightmare otherwise - not to
 mention support contract negotiation headaches).

Hi, I would like to set up an environment for development and programming.
So I guess I will have to seperate out the /usr and / part and keep
/home on a different
partition too.

Re: About to format the whole laptop, need some partitioning advice.

Simply that, if you intend to take i3, you will have to learn to think
differently. My opinion is that tiling wm are far more efficient than
classic stacking window managers, but it indeed changed my habits. Since
then, for example, I do not use any file explorer, they are slower than
command line for most things. Of course, you still can use file explorers...

So you use only command line for navigation files? Or do you use a command line
file explorer?

Now, i3 is the one I choose because it did not implied a lot of learning,
it's configuration file is really clean: no need to learn any programming
language there, but facts is that it lacks some features against more
hard-core twm, for example some others have layouts: new windows does not
just split current container, they are moved in a precise place of the
 screen.
But anyway, here is a quote from i3-wm.org: i3 is primarily targeted at
advanced users and developers.. Gnome users might do not feel good there.
It provide only a window manager, no menu, no desktop, etc. You will have to
 install those yourself.

All I need is a good network manager. A good notifier so that I get notified of
xchat mentions or usb plugged in notifications.

Now I am also a programming student, so learning a good language for a twm
shouldn't be an overkill.

I face a question now:
1) Should I take time to learn a new twm, or should I install both twm and xfce.

2) i3 vs awesome! Just installed i3, lets see how it fares against awesome.

Re: About to format the whole laptop, need some partitioning advice.

2014-02-08 Thread Anubhav Yadav
Something really bad happened. I went to format all my partitions from
the windows 8 installation menu (Bootable usb) and when I went to
format boot partition of windows 100 mb,the installer hanged (typical
of windows) After waiting for say half an hour, I hard-rebooted the
laptop and it was stuck on the bios splash screen. I could do nothing,
could not enter bios, nor could enter the boot menu.

So I took my laptop to the Asus service center. They connected my
hardisk to a casing and the hardisk was not even detected on their
computers.
So they confidently said that your hardisk has been damaged and no
matter what you do, you cannot revive it. You can get a new hardisk
for blah blah money.

I am so badly screwed. After waiting for two months to get my laptop
back (motherboard replacement) I am so badly screwed. I so badly
wanted to prepare for gsoc, literally cried.

Thanks a lot everyone for taking out their precious time and replying
so beautifully to me. So thankful to everyone!

Re: About to format the whole laptop, need some partitioning advice.

2014-02-08 Thread Anubhav Yadav
Someone asked how much RAM you have. How much? 1G is not enough with Gnome 3.

More than 4G is more than is necessary under many normal loads, but
if you don't have 4G, 4G is reasonable. If you can add memory or
replace what you have and have the money to spare.

I have 8 GB ram :)

What are Neo and Workstation for? (May I ask?)

They contained movies and PDF and were windows partitions and will be going off.

Did that tool also have diagnostics? Was it the ASUS provided tool?
Did you run some tool to check that your HD is not having smartdrive
issues? (Ergo, not dying an untimely death.)
No it just gave me the copying speed of HDD. Its a standard linux
utility but I forgot the name.

Suggestions from me (and no reasons to trust me more than anyone else,
 perhaps):

/ (root partition) should be at least large enough to handle a /var
gone out of control if /var doesn't mount, or if you don't have a
separate /var. Minimum 4G (base ten or base two, either way). I'd go
with 8G, since you're starting with a drive bigger than 120G. Larger
if you do choose to combine /usr and /var, and so forth, with the root
 partition.

 /etc? I've seen recommendations to separate /etc as a partition. It's
a bit of a trap for a home-use machine, don't do it this time around.
 Keep /etc with /.

/bin? /sbin? /ilb? Keep these combined with / unless you like to
confuse the kernel when it i trying to boot and can't find any of the
standard tools or even some of the libraries it needs to boot even to
 single-user mode these days.

/usr? There are strange things that happen to Red Hat (Fedora, etc.)
style machines during boot that indicate against /usr being separate.
I've been bitten by them on Fedora, which is one of the reasons I am
 using Debian now.

I keep /usr separate because it tends to change a lot when you install
and remove packages. It's that simple.

However, you don't need more than 32G for /usr unless you really go
crazy installing (literally) every package available, and installing a
lot of packages is one good way to slow your machine down on boot and
login. (Of course, if you don't install lots of stuff, you never get
to play with it and discover new tools. :-/)

Well, be a bit careful what you install beyond what you know you
need, but not too careful. Anyway, 32G for /usr should not be
overkill, and won't be too time consuming when it has to be fsck-ed.

fsck demonstrates one good reason to keep partitions small. Large
partitions take longer on fsck and similar maintenance.

And if you ever have to search for lost text files with testdisk or
such, larger than 32G can be a real, serious show stopper. (I gave up
when I lost two-days' work to a bad Makefile just two weeks back,
because the files were text files and too small for testdisk to see in
the partition they were in. Could have resorted to lower-level
techniques like grep /dev/sda3 or hexdump -C | grep, but I decided it
would be faster to use my gray-matter and type the stuff in from
scratch. It was. (First time took two days to produce the files,
second time took four hours, and was good for checking my work.
Programming is like that in a lot of cases. 8-o)

I also like to be a good programmer :)

Unfortunately, /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, and /usr/lib may contain stuff
that the boot-up process wants to use, and may thus cause problems if
they can't be mounted. As I say, I saw that on Fedora. Not on Debian.
That says something about the differences between the two, I think.

(Fedora folks keep themselves busy inventing solutions to problems of
their own making, it seems to me. That's okay for them. Maybe someday
in the distant future, the side-tour on systemd will bear meaningful
fruit. I don't expect it to happen this year or next, and that's
another reason I'm using Debian now. They can have their fun. I need
to focus on other things, myself.)

So, for Debian, I recommend a separate /usr, 32G since you have it.

/tmp? Some say it is not used any more. I say give it at least 8G. 16G
since you have a big HD to start with. I've used it on odd occasions,
and making it too small is bad news. Keeping it separate, so that you
can separate the stuff that changes from the stuff that doesn't is
 still a good idea.

/var? Similar to my advice on /tmp, separate partition to separate the
stuff that changes a lot from the stuff that doesn't change as much.

But /var tends to stay around, where /tmp is supposed to be cleared
(or clear-able) on boot. So, I'd recommend 16G or even 32G for /var.

/var gets really hammered on system updates. /var/log gets filled up
 quickly when things go south.

And there is /var/tmp which gets used more than /tmp these days. (Both
still get used, even though there are those who claim that ramdisk
temporary files make more sense. Such arguments tend to ignore certain
 real-world issues and practices.)

Why is it that all partitions you are recommending are multiples of 2?

Don't give up yet. Have you a friend who could let you look at your
 hard-drive yourself?

I have got a friend's laptop (Dell) right now in my room, so I am thinking of
removing my hdd and putting that hdd on the dell laptop and trying to
get into a linux boot using the hdd.

And, sorry to seem slow, but why would a messed up hard drive prevent
access to the BIOS? Now a faulty motherboard could, and it is not
unheard of for repairs to fail to function.

If I remove the hdd and boot the laptop, I can go into the bios easily.

Heartbreaking. I really feel for you. But don't give up yet.
Formulate a question or series of questions using the advice that
David gave you and see what this list can come up with. There are
those here who are quite simply magicians.

Yes I agree, guys here can simply just do anything at all.
Truly ingenious! I will keep on reporting what I am doing.
Thanks
