RE: [Declude.JunkMail] SmarterMail 3.0

2005-12-21 Thread Robert E. Spivack

The community support for
SmarterMail is much smaller (or at least quieter).

We are running one SM server for a client
and Ive posted several questions on the SM support forums and have not
received any responses at all.

Similar posts to Imail or Declude discussion
lists have always resulted in lots of replies with useful help.

Obviously the products are different and
the questions are different, but so far Im not impressed with the
size/responsiveness of the community. Thats an important factor we
will consider seriously before migrating any other servers from Imail to SM
saving a few hundred dollars in license costs is insignificant if we cant
get help one way or another as quickly.

(Needless to say, the SM questions were on
issues that SM tech support provided courteous but not helpful replies when
first submitted privately as an email support case, so I was hoping for help
from the community)

Q:
When will we expect to see v. 3?

A:
The release date depends on the results of final QA. The product is
essentially done, just making sure that all the bugs are out of it. Since
mail servers are so critical to people's infrastructure, we work extremely hard
to make a stable release with no issues that are going to bite you. We
don't sacrifice stability for a quick release.

Assuming
everything is in good order (which to this point it appears to be), release
will be middle of January.

web-based forum: I have to go there each day and spend some
minutes to find out what's going on. My 24 hours each day are short enough that
I will do that one, two or some more days but then I will left the forum until I
havea new problem. And for shure not to see if someone maybe has a problem
where I mabe can help.

list-based forum: new postings are comming in and I can see
them. If the subject is well choosen I can easily see if it's something
important, or maybe something I've already solved and so can share an easy
solution. Are there many replies on a new thread? = it's an indicator that
it can be maybe something interesting or important for me too. All the rest can
be ignored. mail-client rules move all my incomming list-messages to subfolders
so that I have my normal inbox for the daily work.

[Declude.JunkMail] SmarterMail and Declude

2005-12-21 Thread Dave Beckstrom
We have one problem with the smartermail and declude combination and I'm
wondering if perhaps the folks at Declude could work with smartertools to
resolve it.

We have Declude set up to NOT add any headers to outbound email. On inbound
email (email sent to us) we add headers such as actual recipients.

Here is the problem. We have an Alias set up called moderators and its
used by our forum moderators. Mail sent to moderators@ is distributed to
about 10 people who have email accounts on yahoo, hotmail, etc.

The problem we have is that the recipient's email addresses are showing up
in the Declude headers on email sent to them. This isn't good because we
don't want users to be able to look at the headers and see the real
addresses of our moderators. Something about how the alias is processed
must make it look like an in-bound email to Declude at some point and it
adds the Declude headers and then forwards the email on to the recipients
respective email accounts.

This should not happen with Alias's and we need a fix for this.

Thanks,

Dave

Evans Martin set up an unofficial
SmarterMail discussion list a few weeks ago. Original message below

Hey guys!

I got really tired of having to log into a web based forum
to see what is going on with SmarterMail so I created a list that I hope we can
turn into something similar to the IMail or Declude user community lists.
Who knows, if enough of us subscribe and start using it, maybe SmarterTools
will lose the web forum and switch to a list format.

If youre interested in giving this a try shoot an
email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
with subscribe smartermail in the BODY of the message (subject
will be ignored). I miss the knowledgeable user community that IMail was
so famous for. Maybe we can do the same for SmarterMail.

Thanks,

Evans Martin

Similar posts to Imail or Declude discussion lists have always resulted in lots
of replies with useful help.

Obviously the products are different and the questions are different, but so
far Im not impressed with the size/responsiveness of the community.
Thats an important factor we will consider seriously before migrating any
other servers from Imail to SM saving a few hundred dollars in license costs
is insignificant if we cant get help one way or another as quickly.

(Needless to say, the SM questions were on issues that SM tech support provided
courteous but not helpful replies when first submitted privately as an email
support case, so I was hoping for help from the community)

SmarterMail 3.0

The following was posted today on SmarterTools web forums:

Q: When will we expect to see v. 3?

A: The release date depends on the results of
final QA. The product is essentially done, just making sure that all the
bugs are out of it. Since mail servers are so critical to people's
infrastructure, we work extremely hard to make a stable release with no issues
that are going to bite you. We don't sacrifice stability for a quick
release.

Assuming everything is in good order (which to this
point it appears to be), release will be middle of January.

[Declude.JunkMail] Test idea

2005-12-21 Thread John T \(Lists\)
Is there any way, and if not is some one willing to come up with a way, of
counting the number of characters in the body and if less than say 10 the
penalize x and if less than say 25 then penalize y?

[Declude.JunkMail] BCC in header

2005-12-21 Thread John T \(Lists\)
Since a BCC line from a legit client will never appear in the header, it
makes sense then that we can filter on BCC: in the header and penalize a
good amount, correct?

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] BCC in header

2005-12-21 Thread Colbeck, Andrew
I've definitely seen a BCC: header entry on legitimate mail, which is
then blank.

I think the big idea is that the sender MTA thought it was a good idea
to let the receiver know that a BCC was used.

Sorry, I can't remember the software or domain involved.

I'd suggest at least creating a new JunkMail Pro filter with

HEADERS 0 CONTAINS BCC:

And then set a copyfile action and running that for a while to check for
false positives before you decide to add weight.

I feel the same way. I've answered several questions in their forums and tried to promote discussion where I was able.As for my own questions, I've always received answers, both from their support and from other users.I guess it depends on the nature of the forum and also a little bit of luck. When I've posted to the ASP.NET Forums (http://forums.asp.net) which is a very large community, on certain ones you get really great responses, and the next day you ask a question and all you hear are the sound of chirping crickets.Timing is a factor too. (I've seen this with Declude as well). Don't ask a question after 5 PM PST Friday as you will not see an answer (unless another user is able to help you). My mail server and I are working 7 days a week, but unfortunately SmarterTools and Declude support are only available M-F. Sometimes it is worth "bumping" your question by replying to it yourself or adding to your original question with more detail.Gary From: "Panda Consulting S.A. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] BCC in header

2005-12-21 Thread Matt

Or if you use an E-mail client that doesn't encode your mail stores,
you can just open it up in a text reader and search for the occurrences.

I did a cursory search and found that Hotmail can display this
behavior, as well as MS SMTP (using something like CDO). It is also
possible that other Microsoft E-mail clients can do this as well, but I
only found one example and it wasn't clear whether or not it was
inserted by the client or a forwarding mechanism.

So appears safe as long as we all stop using Microsoft products :)

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] SmarterMail 3.0

2005-12-21 Thread Matt

Barry,

That's good to know, but I don't think it takes a genius to figure out
what is at issue here.

The difference is "push" vs. "pull".  If you expect customers to help
out in providing community support, you shouldn't expect as much
success doing a message board because that requires pulling people to a
site and then having them dig through posts.  Pushing this information
out through E-mail is effective because there are many more
knowledgeable people that will monitor and check their E-mail from
various discussions since it is easily accessible and all in one
place.  The dynamics of course change when the number of active users
rise beyond what an E-mail discussion group can handle, and at that
point you typically would find enough active members to keep a message
board going.  It is also worth mentioning that we are all E-mail
administrators and E-mail discussion groups should be more appropriate
for us than most any other group.

If someone is looking for a best of both world's approach, then maybe
investing some time and/or money into a real nice list archive to go
along with the group would be beneficial.  IMO, mail-archive.com is
lacking a bit and it could have a friendlier interface for drilling
down.

Both IMail and Declude have their own message boards (if I'm not
mistaken), but hardly any of us ever visit them.  That also should be
proof.

A couple of things:

How to remove the mark as spam
menu items in webmail since they are meaningless when using an external spam
blocking preprocessor.  The suggestion I got from support that in an
unsupported manner I could edit the aspx files, seemed partly
reasonable until I poked around and found that everything is codebehind with
server controls and only the compiled dlls are distributed. Kinda
impossible to modify a server control that way! (I understand why they wont
publish source code, but they sent me down a false alley)

Other issue is more wrappers
around the webservice interface to make it more usable for non SOAP experts.  I
would like to have a commandline utility and some asp/aspx pages that provide a
forms interface for adding domains, users, etc.  Just some published code and
some good examples would help.  There is very little officially available and some
of the stuff published in the forums doesnt work completely.

Last issue was how to use dynamic content
in the skins.  We would like to change the logo based on the URL so we have
have per-domain skins without creating hundreds of virtual sites and
duplicating the webserver files to accomplish that by brute force.  The whole
skin thing is not well documented for changing anything non-trivial.  The skin templates
are *.htm files which somehow get pre-processed into aspx files
but one cannot touch those aspx files easily.

Andrew,

No, I guess you must have it worse then I do! *chuckleBut I do laugh at
a lot of the ridiculous stuff I see in the movies.

There was one movie, I don't recall which, that had a scene with the
StorageTek robotic tape drives in it. That was cool because I installed
about six of them for a company years ago.

Ha -
long before Gates started college, therewas a company called International
Business Machines. And you had to program sorter/merger machinesto get
your punch cards in the proper order for the revolutionarybrand-new /370s
- because disk sorting was not yet available, even though at least the operating
system was finally a "D"os. Instead of a "G"UI you had a
teletype.

And
Windows were something you put in walls to look through.

Yet,
programs were "abending" already.

I'm
frequently amused about "new" concepts thatare beingintroduced into
desktop/server architecture from time to time - often thinking, "been there -
done that, butmore than 20 years ago".

abend

I have had
decludeproc 3.0.5.22 abend on me twice today. Is there anything I should be
doing to capture information about this? I have automatic restart enabled so
it starts again but I am not super happy with it abending.

Any hints on what
(if anything) I can/should be doing?

What, you had a teletype instead of keypunch? Bah,
kids today. When I was a boy, we had to walk uphill in the snow both ways
just to submit our punchcards for overnight processing. And we liked
it.
