Judging by the responses, I suppose that it is inappropriate, at least
without approaching Barry about promoting this product here. I don't
however believe that the intentions were to snipe customers away from
Declude, but instead to provide a value-added solution to those of us
that require an address-validating gateway or pre-scanner of some sort.
His company has of course previously offered a plug-in for Declude, and
publishes a blacklist that many around here are making use of as well.
I don't believe that they are looking at this product as a big money
maker for them, or even a money maker at all. Even programs like
Sniffer has some potential of competing with Declude, though both are of
course stronger as a result of working together. It would be good for
Declude to offer a gateway solution of some sort or find a partner to do
so.

when i force imail to deliver (by using send all) it works, so it looks like
something is preventing imail from starting the queuerun but not from doing the

declude-processes are blocking parts of the imail processes?

This is our experience as well. I've used the suggestion of manually
restarting the queue run every hour, but that's a rather ugly kludge. I
have no idea how Declude would be influencing the queue like this, since
I thought that that operation came *after* any Declude functions, but we
did not have this problem prior to the upgrade, and with the Postfix box
getting rid of 99% of the distributed dictionary attacks, there's no
other explanation for an expanding balloon of queued mail that sits
there unless I start directly using the web interface spool control to
send them.

[Declude.JunkMail] JunkMail and Virus Mailing List Etiquette

2006-01-26 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
We have refrained from setting rules on our mailing lists but the time has
come to remind subscribers of a few basics.

The mailing lists are designed to provide a forum for all of us to better
learn and understand issues that are being faced by the community
• Do try to think about the message content before you send it out.
• Do make sure that the content is relevant to the recipients. Nobody
likes to receive junk email.
• Do be polite. Constructive criticism is usually welcome but blatant
abuse is not.
• Do trim any quoted message down as much as possible.
• Do ensure that you have a relevant Subject line.
• Do include a brief signature on your email messages to help the
recipient understand who it is from, especially if you are dealing with
someone you do not know very well.
• Do be careful when replying to mailing list messages. Are you sure
you want to reply to the whole list?
• Do remember to delete anything that isn't needed or is trivial.
• Do remember to post bug reports to [EMAIL PROTECTED] where they
will be logged and tracked.
• Don't conduct arguments on the mailing list.
• Don't make personal remarks about third parties.

There have been some recent comments about advertising third party
applications on the mailing lists and the rule that should apply is:

“If the product being discussed is not a competitor to Declude, SmarterMail
or IMail and can enhance the effectiveness of our users then it is an
appropriate topic. This includes such applications as Sniffer, DL Analyzer
and iPlus Info Browser.”

[Declude.JunkMail] Adding text to Subject of FORWARDED e-mail

2006-01-26 Thread Marc Catuogno
Can Declude, IMAIL (or anything) add text to subject of an e-mail that is
being forwarded to an outside e-mail address?

I have too many users (that I am not allowed to stop) forwarding their
e-mail to AOL. Of course some SPAM slips through and they hit report spam
effectively reporting my server as SPAM. I would like to add something to
the subject of these e-mails so that they know it was from Prudential Rand
and MAYBE, just maybe, they won't hit that stupid useless button

Thanks -

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Adding text to Subject of FORWARDED e-mail

2006-01-26 Thread Darin Cox
With Declude you can add footers to text messages, and Sandy has an add-in
that can add a footer to HTML messages.

Or you could write a script to run as an external test in Declude (or plug
it directly into the mail handling workflow) to parse the message and put a
statement in the body of the message if it is being forwarded to an AOL
address.

You may have to check the registry to determine if it will be forwarded,
though. I don't think you'll see that in the message itself due to the
forwarding not occurring until after the message is delivered to the mailbox
or alias.

Darin.

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] ANN: SMTP Gateway

2006-01-26 Thread Lists - Declude JunkMail
I see Alligate as an excellent compliment to our Imail 8.15/Declude 1.82
setup.

I for one was thankful to learn about it through this list, as we've
been struggling with finding an SMTP filtering gateway to sit in front
of our working, stable Imail/Declude setup. I didn't have any prior
experience with Alligate or Brian so my reading of the announcement was
strictly informational.

I don't see Alligate being a competitor to Imail or SmarterMail. It
doesn't provide pop3, imap, webmail, or anything of the things that our
customers call their mail server.

It could compete against Declude. Except it works at the initial SMTP
connection level (Pre processing) whereas Declude works after the SMTP
connection is complete (Post processing). If Declude offered a stable
pre-processing solution, I for one would sign up immediately. As I am
not aware of any information from Declude stating they have a solution
for this, we've all had to look elsewhere (5XX, Vamsoft, IMGate, etc).

Dictionary attacks are killing us, as is the volume of spammers hitting
our Imail box. ANYTHING to minimize what Imail/Declude has to process,
without costing and arm and a leg, or a forklift upgrade is welcome!

Alligate is a step above the 5XXSINK, by including tarpitting, detailed
text logs, secondary SMTP AUTH port, connection blocking, etc. To me
it's the right solution at the right time.

IMGate wouldn't work for us because my staff doesn't do *nix, and I
don't want to be the only one to support the box ;) I've got to sleep
sometimes.

Since we let our Imail support lapse and are holding judgment on
SmarterMail until v3 is released, we're in a technical holding pattern
while the spammers continue to assault our servers.

I don't think I'm alone, which means there is an opportunity for someone
and a potential market. While I love all this stuff, I have to eat too,
and don't fault anyone for turning my pain into their financial gain so
they can eat, if the value proposition is right.

R. Scott Perry got assaulted on the Imail list repeatedly for years for
pushing his wares. Imail had a gap-in-functionality, Declude seized the
moment and profited by patching that gap. I was thankful for his
repeated input/arguments and purchased his product - against Imail's own
later offering.

I hope Declude isn't struggling - they are vital to our business. I
also hope that others aren't silent about other available options,
competitive or otherwise. This list is so great for learning - where
else can one go to learn more about real-world, ISP-level email
delivery?

Sorry for the ramble, just had to put my .02 in...

2006-01-26 Thread Colbeck, Andrew
216.9.248.49 is listed in SpamCop, since at least 5am PST.

See:

http://www.spamcop.net/w3m?action=blcheckip=216.9.248.49

I would guess because of bounced viruses (e.g. the latest round of Bagle
that started last night). The page above notes that a neighbouring IP
(from which I have received good mail) has had a SpamCop listing
previously (but not currently). I recommend:

REMOTEIP -20 CIDR 216.9.240.0/20

Or some similar weight in one of your Declude JunkMail Pro filter files.

I should amend this by saying that functionality to append within Declude
and Sandy's product append to all messages, so an external script would be
necessary if you want to selectively append.
