Re: [DUG] Code Insight D2010 win 7

2010-02-16 Thread Richard Bullin
Hi Ian,

I remember having this problem when I first started using 2010 after upgrading
from delphi 7 the unfortunate part is I can't remember what I did exactly to
solve it?

I do remember that the code insight would work on some parts of the unit but
not others and I think this is what lead me to find the issue, so try using
code insight right at the top of your unit and see if that works and then
divide and conquer. Does code insight work if you create a brand new project?

I also remember starting up a new project and then resaving the project to the
name of my project and using the droj from this as a template as I don't think
the automatic upgrade thing from the dpr to the dproj worked right (not 100%),
but might help?

Regards
Richard Bullin

[DUG] Structure view disappears from debug desktop

2009-09-13 Thread Richard Bullin
Hi All,

I'm about to submit a bug report to Embarcadero but I just wanted to see
if anyone else has this problem as well.

When I'm debugging my structure pane disappears. I've correctly setup
and then told it to use a particular desktop for my debugging but it
doesn't matter what I do (undock it, pin it) it just disappears as soon
as you start debugging. I noticed this problem in 2007 as well and I
know it's only a minor but quite frankly I've noticed a lot of minor
ide problems that are starting to add up and frustrate me a bit.

I've also noticed all my bug reports (which were never solved and still
present in 2010) are no longer in the quality central?

[DUG] Code Completion not working

2009-09-06 Thread Richard Bullin
Hi,

We're currently using Delphi 2007 and have downloaded the trial version
of 2010 and code completion just doesn't want to work?

Has anyone else had this problem, I saw on Quality Central that there
were a few people using 2009 that had this problem. It's definitely
something to do with the project (the 2007 project loaded into 2010)
because if I start a new project code completion works fine.

Damn it's hard to program without it L, I think I'm going to have a look
into the dproj files etc.

Re: [DUG] Code Completion not working

2009-09-06 Thread Richard Bullin
Thanks for that John,

I managed to solve the problem, so keep this one on hand for any of you
that are looking at upgrading from Delphi 07 to 2010.

I did make a copy of our 2007 directory and it's to do with the .dproj
file and maybe the directories?

Anyway I just created a new project in Delphi 2010 and saved the project
with the same name as the one in which the code completion wasn't
working but into a separate directory, this created a new .dproj file. I
made a copy of the current .dproj file (the one from Delphi 2007) and
then replaced it with the one I just made in 2010. Then you recompile it
and re-add any directories into its search path and then code completion
works.

I did a comparison between the old and the new one but I couldn't tell
who the culprit was.

One possibility is if you have moved the source into a different folder
from where it was under D2007, then some of the files - .dproj and
others contain some hard wired path information that needs to be
altered.

The ways to fix this are edit the files or delete them and allow Delphi
to recreate them.

I wrote a search and replace program to search for paths and replace
them - this is another option - if its any use email me and I can send
it.

Also check the project options to see if there are old paths there.

If you did not move the source to a different path then these
suggestions will not apply, although the delete old non-essential files
may fix it - will be similar to starting a new project.

refer to http://delphi.wikia.com/wiki/Delphi_File_Extensions for a
comprehensive list of delphi extensions and what stores what, there are
lots in D2007 for instance, too many to remember. It also tells you
which can be deleted (the ones not to keep in source control).

I had all sorts of issues like this moving from D2006 to D2007, but
mainly because I also copied the source to a new folder.

Re: [DUG] Everyone aware of the Delphi roadmap presentationon 27thmay?

2009-05-28 Thread Richard Bullin
Well I was glad to hear about project X, the timing is just unfortunate
though as we are already half way through converting our Kylix code to
c++ as we were under the impression it was a dead duck and we can't
really afford to wait how many days/years for it to come out?

Anyway I'd also like to mention that our windows based applications have
always used Delphi and I love the language, the only thing that I get
frustrated about is that there seems to be an increase in bugs in what I
would consider basic functionality. We upgraded from Delphi 7 to Delhi
2007 and noticed a lot of bugs mainly to do with the IDE (i.e. structure
view not updating, forms not getting sent to back, tool palette
switching to project wizards while trying to place components...), I did
submit quite a few bugs which could be replicated and even after
downloading the 2009 trial I noticed that they are still there.

Anyway I'd just like to say that our company would gladly pay money for
a new version even if it only included bug fixes, as having new features
but at the cost of frustrating little bugs that add up is not cool. All
access doesn't interest us either. There's my 2c.

Glad to hear it was useful. I've got some feedback from a few people

a couple of issues that we'll try and tighten up for next time. Did
you
get the audio ok? That seems to have been an issue for a couple of

We're planning/hoping to do a webinar every Wednesday at the same

This was the first, next week we have one on Database Performance

finalizing the topics/speakers for the next 6 weeks or so at the
moment
and will hopefully publish them soon. I'm trying to get one during
June
that covers the issues involved with bringing old code forward to the
Unicode VCL. Any other topic requests, let me know.

They will all be recorded and posted into a central place on the

last
 Wednesday's up there.

Close Delphi - 0MB
Open Delphi - 11MB
Open Project - 71MB
Compile - 154MB (peaking at around 170MB)
Open a Project with modeling support - 215MB

And the numbers just keep going up from there the more you do.

I think it's fair to say that it is a bit of a memory hog. Although I
have 6 chrome processes running currently eating up a total of 155MB.

I guess we could turn this into a discussion of who is running the most
memory hungry App and/or instance of Delphi currently?

[DUG] Internationalization/Delphi 2009

2009-04-02 Thread Richard Bullin
Hi all,

Our company is looking at making our application multi-lingual sometime
in the near future. I did spend a bit of time previously looking into
this and we started using a program called POedit (
http://www.poedit.net/ ) to get the strings extracted for use with an
external translator.

We're currently using Delphi 2007 and were wondering firstly if anyone
out there is using Delphi 2009 for this purpose as the new features
listed do say that its fully Unicode enabled but I'm not sure what the
process is or how hard it is to do and what tools are available in 2009
that aren't available in 2007 for this task?

The info on the web inplies driver issues - mainly for USB?

I went to the Sony web site and loaded any relevant updates for the PC

So my inference is still its a Vista issue.

Can anyone shed light on this?

I have one program that is prone to getting an exception dialog when it
starts on Vista.

The dialog is

Windows - No Disk

Exception processing Message 0xc013 Parameters 0x764292A0
0x0004 0x764292A0 0x764292A0

I think its a Vista problem because the program does this whether inside
or outside the IDE, and it disappears if the PC is rebooted, and returns
later. Is it trying to access one of the other drive letters such as a
card reader (there is one on this PC)?

There are also references to this on the web, eg

http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1621609SiteID=
17

where people are just guessing, which suggests amongst others problems
with USB or removable disk drivers.

This program is checking free hard disk space on start up with code like
below:

(But I don't think its even getting this far - it is based on some code
I found on the net - and it gives the error message even if the code is
commented out)

procedure xcDiskStats(Drive: string; var aTotalDisk: real; var
aDiskUsed: Real; var aDiskFree: real; var aDiskPercentFree: integer; var
aStat: string);

Re: [DUG] VCL

2008-10-07 Thread Richard Bullin
The component that your trying to use was created with delphi 5, but I'd
say your not using delphi 5.

If this is the case then you need to rename the files to reflect what
version of delphi you are using, i.e. if your using delphi 7 or 2007
then try renaming to vcl.dcp and vclx.dcp.

Re: [DUG] Interfaces

2008-08-06 Thread Richard Bullin

You've declared Res as being a IXMLResidentialType and then asking if
IXMLResidentialType implements Iauctionable, which it doesn't.

You need to make res a TXMLResidentialType as below

var
  Res : TXMLResidentialType;
  Auctionable : IAuctionable;
begin
  Res := TXMLResidentialType.Create;
  if Res.QueryInterface(IAuctionable, Auctionable) = 0 then
ShowMessage('Auctionable');

That should work

Should work as is by the looks of it.
Could also try

If supports( res, IAuctionable, Auctionable ) then ...

I would debug/step into the QueryInterface method and then check the
actual classname of the object you are dealing with to see if it is
actually TXMLResidentialType.

You could always also implement IInterface/IUnknown and provide another
version of QueryInterface (which I have done on many an instance).

Interfaces ... lots of fun!

I'm having some fun with interfaces

I have two interfaces IXMLResidentialType and IAuctionable.
I have a class which implements these two interfaces TXMLResidentialType
= class(TXMLNode, IXMLResidentialType, IAuctionable)

...

I have some code
var
  Res : IXMLResidentialType;
  Auctionable : IAuctionable;
begin
...
  if Res.QueryInterface(IAuctionable, Auctionable) = 0 then
ShowMessage('Auctionable');

What I'm trying to determine is if Res implements IAuctionable - which
it does (through TXMLResidentialType which effective Res is an instance
of), however IXMLResidentialType doesn't seem to realise this. How do I

make this work?

Does this question make any sense?

If I'm not able to do this it's not too much of a problem, but will mean

a bunch of duplicated code.

Re: [DUG] Errors

2008-07-13 Thread Richard Bullin
Im using 2007 and error insight is still buggy (I just disabled it).

Must admit I moved from delphi 7 to 2007 and its great to see all these
new features and pretties but not at the cost of basic functionality,
there are some small annoying things like if your forms arnt docked and
you
click on the editor the form doesn't get sent to the back, the structure
window doesn't update to reflect what your working on all the time,
using F1 to bring up help on item cursor is over not great, I've had the
ide crash a few times with some funny errors?

yea i got D2006 here, and get that problem happening as well.
only way to fix it is to pay to upgrade eh!

I think I remember a big talk earlier about companies which the only way
to fix the bug is to pay for there latest copy, ie upgrade to D2007 to
fix this D2006 issue.

Can anyone tell me what is going on??

[DUG] DBX4 drivers for firebird

2008-05-19 Thread Richard Bullin
Hi all,

Our company has just recently ported from Delphi 7 to Delphi 2007. When we try
to insert a blob into a firebird table using DBX4 (dbexpress) we were getting
the following message Incorrect values within SQLDA structure. Their are
plenty of references to this problem on the internet and it turns out that DBX4
doesn't support/work with firebird anymore. This problem has got the second
highest votes on the codegear bug/feature request page
(http://qc.codegear.com/wc/qcmain.aspx?d=41034) and comments about this problem
go back to 2007 and yet I still cant find any references to this problem being
fixed.

I have fixed this problem by downloading a third party dbexpress driver from
http://www.upscene.com/ (go to downloads and down the bottom there's a trial
version for InterXpress for firebird, the readme forgets to include the
directory for the dbxdrivers.ini file for 2007 which is C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Documents\RAD Studio\dbExpress).

The above works perfectly but I don't feel we should have to pay for this
option and were wondering if anyone else has found any other solutions or heard
any news about whether codegear are actually planning on supporting this,
sounds like there's a lot of people screaming about this.

I also found a free driver at
http://www.tbosystems.bluehosting.com.br/dbx4/indexen.php
http://www.tbosystems.bluehosting.com.br/dbx4/indexen.php , it seems to go
well apart from the fact that it crashes 10-30 seconds after executing all the
sql statements.

RE: [DUG] DBX4 drivers for firebird

2008-05-19 Thread Richard Bullin
Heres a few reasons why.

1.
If you look at the votes on the codegear support page
(http://qc.codegear.com/wc/qcmain.aspx?p=10) you can tell that there are a lot
of people who are currently using firebird with dbxpress. There are currently
1710 votes which split off into 3 different sections but they are the same
thing, that sounds like a lot of frustrated customers.
2.
It use to work with delphi 7 (from what I understand this wasn't by
design?).

So CodeGear should be putting some serious thought into this because if I was
aware of this before I would have had second thoughts about upgrading. Hows
this for a sales pitch, upgrade your delphi to 2007 for $x ohh and by the way
you'll have to fork out an extra £49-550 to be able to continue to talk to your
database (This refers to the only third party driver that seems to work). If I
have to I'll either revert back to Delphi 7 which so far has been more stable
to me then 2007 or I'll just fork out the money. But the purpose of my email
was to see if anyone else has developed a solution seen as there are references
to this problem dating back to 2007.

If I had the ability/experience to make the driver myself I would happily
distribute to anyone else who needed it and this is the reason why I'm asking.
