I think by creating a "category" with name for department or

Categories are just folders.
So there should be no change. Just the view is different.

Apart from that: if that solution fails, it would be _most_ _helpful_ if
people with different needs jump in _early_ when all work is discussed.
Not with RC3 :)

Sure, the concept is there for months, and we discussed this in each weeks
Design Hangout while Akshay was working on it.
So things that come up now can only go into 5.3, not 5.2.

The folders are shown as categories (on the top right), and you can filter by
category so that only templates from the selected category are shown.

Maybe there is some confusion about Template Manager and the Templates view in
the start center.
What I'm talking about is the Template Manager.

Ok, but does it really make sense to show the path in the tooltip?
I mean, you can edit the template via the context menu.

If you feel it does make sense, we can of course change it.

Templates are not stored "in the same folder". I have got a separate

templates for teaching mathematic, or templates for administration

Hi Pierre,

thanks for your comments. Answers inline.

When I Launch LO, I can see pictures of my last documents. Bellow the
picture, there is the name of my doc (not exactly is name, but the
name of the file without extension file)

If my mouse pointer is on the picture, a little rectangle will appear
with the full name (path and name) of the document

OK

If I go to the template manager, bellow the picture, it's the real
name of the template. Not the name of the file, but the title of the
template. If you want to change this title, you must open the
template, and then go to :

File -> Properties/Description and the fill the Title as you wish.
(I think there is a problem if two templates have the same Title)

If my mouse pointer is over the picture then, in the little rectangle,
I have the same information, the Title. There is no information about
the file name, and its location.

Don't you think that theses behaviors should be the same ?

Working on template is great, Why not investigate this bug while of GSoC ?

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=89286 (Create

inherit from impress template broke document styles)

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60589 ([Template

We investigated all of these. And we fixed a whole bunch of open bugs
while on it. But these are really hard ones, some may even be WONTFIX
(50699 and 89286) because that issue is solved with document themes, not

AW: [libreoffice-design] Re: Impress Mode Toolbar

2016-01-14 Thread Samuel Mehrbrodt
May I suggest that we show the Tab bar by default in for now and think about
further improvements in the next releases?
I know the Tab bar is not ideal, but neither is the mode selector drop down.

I understand Italo that a quick switch between normal and slide sorter mode is
necessary for power users.
This is provided by the Tab bar.

When/if we have buttons to switch between these two modes elsewhere (maybe the
statusbar), we can hide the tab bar again.

If you are ok with that, I'll prepare a patch to show the tab bar by default.

Thanks
Samuel

Don't be silly, please. I have 5 computers, so I have LibreOffice 5.1
installed on 3 machines since Beta 1, and I have just installed RC2, but
on the computer I use for production I still have LibreOffice 5.0
because Impress is unusable because of this completely idiot decision
(again, not shared at all with Impress users, but based only on ideas of
a few people who do not use Impress as a professional tool).

Anyway, if the decision is to keep the insanity as it is, and to turn
down complaints as rants - twice, just unbelievable - I will fight it
with all my force and in every available channel.

RE: [libreoffice-design] libre office vs numbers

2015-12-06 Thread Samuel Mehrbrodt
Hi Roland,

sure it's good to have some mockups as a discussion guide, but best would be if
you could work directly on the layout files.
They are created with Glade<https://glade.gnome.org/>. If you need help with
that, please come to the #libreoffice-design IRC channel.

Please keep in mind that some parts of the sidebar's properties section are
shared between apps (Writer, Impress, Draw, Calc).
Also we prefer not to completely redesign the sidebar (and UI in general), but
gradually improve it.

Thanks

I love to get my hands dirty. Just give me some time and I'll send you some

meaning, I will base my work on that. If that's too close to the apple UI,

hello everyone,

first of all thanx for your great effort!
I have been using libre office for many years and it has improved a lot since
then.

I have been working on user interfaces in the past and I just thought you might
appreciate a few thoughts that could potentially help improve the libre office
UI. In fact, I have done a little comparison of libre office calc and numbers
(osx). Based on that, here are a few suggestions:

divide options into managable groups. do not show all options at the same time.
instead organize them in sections
work with tabs
avoid strong color contrasts. the human eye isn't made for it.
avoid black on white background, use grey shades instead (dark grey on light
grey is highly recommended)
avoid bold text in strong colors such as black and red
avoid colors in general, unless used to highlight something. this helps the
user to focus on the important matters.
only use colors to highlight the current state of a text/cell (e.g. the
checkbox "Tausendertrennzeichen" should be in color if it is active for the
marked cell, otherwise it should be grey)
do use colors for color options, obviously.
combine related buttons in groups (see e.g. the button group "Ausrichtung")
this way the UI is less clustered and easier to comprehend.
hide unnecessary design elements. as we all know, good design is as little
design as possible.
only show indicators when they are actually needed (see the two screenshots
with color option below)
avoid additional external formating menus with ever more options. instead work
with tabs and control buttons within the sidebar framework (see last screenshot
below)
avoid scrollbars
if they seem necessary, then this is a sign that there is already too much
information
if a scrollbar is needed, hide it until the user actually starts scrolling

hope this is of any help. If you have any questions go ahaid.

In any case, thanx again for your effort!

best wishes,
roland

Hi,

Only week days are available.
For people working ~50 hours per week it's just impossible to join if
it's not during the week-end.
It feels weird that no option is given for a meeting during the week-end.

Best regards,

AW: [libreoffice-design] Mime Type Icons Redesign Proposal

2015-11-13 Thread Samuel Mehrbrodt
Hi Paulo,

I like your icons. Others might judge them better since I'm not a designer.
But still I have one request: As Andy Latty wrote a few days ago on this list,
the "generic" LibreOffice icon doesn't look very nice.
Others feel the same about that icon. Maybe you have an idea how to improve
that? Someone told me, that icon should look so that you actually *want* to
click on it. Obviously currently it doesn't.

So if you have any ideas/designs for that, that would be most welcome :)

Thanks
Samuel

color (default and high contrast). I included the new sizes of 64px and
96px because they are common today in most OS's (i.e. default icon in
Nautilus are now 64, 96 and 128 px).

Re: [libreoffice-design] Default Writer Template

I like it that you use a sans-serif font now.
Are there any other options but "Liberation Sans"? I guess the choice is
very limited because we need to support many languages.

My personal preferences are

 * For headings: "Open Sans" or "Source Sans Pro" (because they have
many weights (Light, Normal, Semibold, Bold, Extrabold))
 * For continous text Gentium or "Linux Libertine".
 * For shorter texts "Open Sans".

What do others think?

Thanks

Captions are going to be implemented. Not sure whether they make it into
4.1. I'm just creating EasyHacks for them.
But I can't see a real use case where Text boxes would be useful in a
multi-image layout. Also it would be too complex to cover all use cases
in this Dialog.

Hi Mattias,

thanks for that, these are good suggestions. Would you create a
Whiteboard (https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Whiteboards) for
this?
Then, after having a good Design discussed and approved by the Design
team, a developer could step in and implement those things.

Some suggestions you may add to your design:

 * Choose a background color
 * Shuffle pictures
 * Rotate picture

Thanks

Hey, take a look at this one:

This one makes a lot more work for the implementator, but it might be
worth it. It's mostly standard stuff, but what might be somewhat more
costly (as in developer time) is rendering text slides and in-preview
text editing. If someone stands up only to implement parts of this,
then there is no problem making it simpler if needed.

What is different:
Image previews, draggable, selectable.
Image position per slide.
Text slide preview.

One more note still, if someone uses widescreen projector (and
widescreen presentation), then of course the thumbnails wouldn't be
4:3 but whatever the page settings are for the current document.

Re: [libreoffice-design] Re: Streamlining the Photo Album Creator

2013-05-10 Thread Samuel Mehrbrodt

Hi Mirek,
I don't suppose VCL has an equivalent for a toolbar attached to the
end of a listbox, like the one shown in
https://github.com/gnome-design-team/gnome-mockups/blob/master/theming/widgets/widget-factory.png
(the one with +, - buttons)?
Hm I also don't know. I will play a bit with it and see if I can make it
look more than a toolbar, maybe just use Icons.
Also, from your screenshot, it seems as though the file address gets
cut off at the end. It would be preferable if you could add an
ellipsis at the beginning instead and leave the filename readable.
I have removed this completely from the dialog in a recent patch. I
don't think it's useful.
Lastly, the "Preview" label throws off the alignment with the listbox.
I would say the preview is self-explanatory and thus a label is
unnecessary, but it's your call.
I will decide about this when I change the dialog according to Mattias’
suggestions. I put it there because there was just empty space when no
Image is selected which looked a bit odd. But I can still fix the alignment.

Thanks for your good comments!

Hi Mattias,

thanks for the new Mockup, I like it.

Changes:
* moved album layout to the right below Preview

That's better, I'll change this accordingly.

* removed "Album Content" title

I'm not sure if this is good. I will play around a bit with it and see.
* removed file:///home/samuel from the path and replaced with ~, for
windows it could be replaced with e.g My Documents.
In a recent patch I have completely removed the path in the dialog. I
found it disturbing and not helpful.

Re: [libreoffice-design] 4.0 branding - current summarize

2013-01-29 Thread Samuel Mehrbrodt

Why should someone not on the Design list vote for a Design issue?

Hi all,

I didn't yet give feedback, but I you want to follow the vote on the FR
list, here is the thread :

I will give a summary before the deadline.
Kind regards

Hi,

I put together current votes for 4.0 branding. (it's very unofficial
format) I hope people will look for their votes and correct my
mistakes. Kévin PEIGNOT please upload your votes again didn't quite
well understand and not included on spreadsheets.

Feel free to add your votes, everyone can edit this file:

Re: [libreoffice-design] Re: 4.0 Branding poll

2013-01-29 Thread Samuel Mehrbrodt

Hi,

I'm not sure how the voting system is supposed to work. I took the last
email, and added my votes to that. Others took the plain list from the
first mail and added their votes to that.

What is the right way?

Maybe an online voting system would help?

Hi Kévin, Samuel and all voters,

we should avoid such things like "-3".

Am 29.01.2013 08:24, schrieb Kévin PEIGNOT:

"V2" by Javier Antonio Nisa Ávila: -3

Everybody has one vote for or against and do it so.

At least doing such changes at a legal vote is making your whole vote
uncountable in mostly every country.

I will say that because the next one will do a "+10" and a
"-1000".
