Re: [libreoffice-design] Opinions on new icons for the Start Center?
Hi Stefan, Christophe, * I now scaled the icons properly and payed attention to the pixel grid: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/User:Alexander_Wilms Regarding the extension icon: I don't know why I turned the puzzle piece around, but now its orientated as before and I use the colors Christophe suggested. Do you think they are polished enough for inclusion? This new shade of light green (#8AE234) has a contrast ratio of 4:1 with the #0058C2 blue, so unless you find a darker shade of blue for the jigsaw piece and/or a slightly lighter shade of green for the arrow (e.g. #8AE234 or something lighter for the whole surface inside the dark green border) I would use the #8AE234 on #0058C2 combination. Re: [libreoffice-design] Opinions on new icons for the Start Center?
Hi Alex, Do you think they are polished enough for inclusion? I'd say you're getting close... but the new icons are /not/ going to be in 3.5 (as the deadline is today and I still have some issues). Anyway, let's make 3.6's Tango theme the best so far. For the next round please focus on the extension icon and its arrow – I have put some work in a hopefully improved Open File icon (I did copy the arrangement from the Gnome 3 icon set, yes) [1], and I consider the other icons reasonably usable as I pushed them to 3.6 a week ago. The only thing that will need to be changed later is the arrow on the Add Templates icon (so that it looks the same as the one in the Extension icon. With that said, here are a few more things about the extension icon: * don't put shadows on the border (they're going to be cut off on export, obviously) * respect the the 1 px outer border, 1 px inner border of the Tango guidelines, gradients there are fine, though * apropos gradients: you might want to add some gradients to your icon, also puzzle pieces usually have some slightly glossy coating [2], so some slight light reflections might add a lot to the appearance. Re: [libreoffice-design] Opinions on new icons for the Start Center?
Hi Alex, all, there are new icons in the Start Center now, but only on Master (i. e. what will be 3.6). Now, here's what I did: I pushed most of my icons, with the exception of the i icon where I simply used a scaled-down version of your icon. I have not yet asked for a cherry-pick to 3.5 as there are quite a few icons that should be changed along with the Start Center icons (many folder icons, some extension icons, some template icons) -- most of those need to be 16*16, which is where things are really getting a bit complicated. Also, the icons (that I pushed) themselves don't feel quite finished yet. My plan is still a bit unclear, I think the safe choice would be delaying the new start centre stuff to 3.6...dunno. I know my communication with you on this matter is not quite ideal (to put it nicely). My apologies for that. I am not trying to humiliate you here, please know that your contributions are appreciated. http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/User:Alexander_Wilms#Stuff The folder icon is pretty much the same as Stefans. I am still wondering whether the small template icon would be too hard to recognize. Okay, some feedback, finally: Hm, you scaled all the icons to 26*26, respectively 34*34, what I really meant was that the 1px border should be contained in the 24/32px size already. Next, some of the icons you did look quite fuzzy (you noticed that yourself with the Add Templates icon). The general rule is that while some elements are naturally fuzzy (circles or slopes for example) and we can't do much, all others should align as much as possible to the given pixel grid. Thus, for the spiral binding of the Templates icon, the best thing to do is reduce the number of spiral segments in the icon, so each of those segments is exactly n pixels high (I chose a height of one pixel, using two would be possible but the result would seem overly unrealistic). A few remarks about your Add Extensions icon: first, purple does seem to work out (unlike brown, which I've checked [1]) [2], but turning the puzzle piece on the head doesn't work at all, sorry, the relation to the TDF document icon is completely lost there. Hi Alex, all, just to raise this flag - though we'd slipped a bit with beta1, please assume that Monday, Dec. 19th is hard UI freeze. :) (http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan/3.5) Cool, would you be so kind to guide Alexander through what he has to do to submit the icons? Re: [libreoffice-design] Opinions on new icons for the Start Center?
Hi, I'll happily push Alexander's and my contributions to 3.6, the only thing I'd hoped for was a review from Christoph. Alex already uploaded his icons to the wiki – I think I don't even need to ask him for the license, because he already used the CC-BY-SA/MPL/LGPL upload option of the wiki. Afterwards, I guess I'll just ask for a cherry-pick to 3.5.
