Here are my comments: * panel 3 -- front page: I am not sure I like this design. From a marketing point of view, IMO, the white at the top of the panel, gives the impression that someone forgot to add some text, I don't think we are too concerned with the panel 3 focusing on the OS's as this is what we actually want to do ... we want people who have picked up our brochure to realize that we are on these 3 OS's (and eventually Android and possibly more). * frames ... great! I love the fact that the green bar is now tied in with the frame. This will cause fewer problems with community teams. * LibreOffice white logo in the green bar, yes, great the spacing is equal. Thanks! * I printed up a sample of the included text in your example that you set at 120%. I am not sure that I agree with this spacing. It makes the brochure look unconventional and too metric. IMO, if we are to tweak anything, we should try to tweak the size of the font to make it more readable. We have gone through this exercise before with sample text and IMO this should be left to the decision of the marketing team who will be creating the text and basing it on their own impression of readability and how it fits into the brochure -- IMO, the spacing is more of a marketing decision and less of design decision. The marketing team will be creating content for about 15 types of brochure and they will all have different content, but use the same community template design. ** Don't forget, this thread is all about creating a community template without any text. So IMO from your suggestions we could already: * adopt the logo and the green bar (frame) changes into the template * leave the sentence spacing to the marketing team, as it deals more with marketing issues and less of design issues. * wait for other people's opinion on your suggestion for the panel 3 (front page) design ** I would vote -1 on it, I prefer the original design. *** We could change the panel 3 (front panel) design to the one that you suggest if some of the contributing designers on the list agree to the change. I would like to see Charles, Italo, Issa and Tim's comments on your panel 3 suggestion before accepting it as they have been contributing their comments the most on the designs. Thanks for your help with the design. We really appreciate your help. We will have need for more design help with other marketing items later as well; it would be nice if you could help us with these items. The marketing team will be creating content for about 15 types of brochure and they will all have different content, but use the same community template design. I have no objections on using single line spacing. BTW, you forgot from the list that greater linespacing eats up a lot of space and we loose some valuable room for text. I have tested the font and line spacing with an older version of this brochure design style. I have tried adding and removing line spacing. I have tried normal and narrow/condensed fonts. To get the most out of the panel's space, I think a narrow or condensed font would look good. Yet, it will depend on the font[s] used. Also, whatever font you use, it would be better if you use a freely downloadable font that anyone could have access to. For me, when I get a good brochure with the content filled in, I would want it to be placed online for any other marketing person/group to take it and modify it to their needs. If people choose fonts that are not free or hard to find, then it may be a big issue for some people. I have the full Adobe font library from 2000[?]. I know most home/office users would not have access to those fonts, so I would never use them for this type of project. ** Don't forget, this thread is all about creating a community template without any text. Never forgot it. Just without text we cannot actually see what we are talking about. I alway test out the design[s] with sample content. That way I can see if the whole design works together. But, yes, we need to get the brochure template done so people can start working on the editing of the content. Then we would have a brochure that we could use for our next scheduled presentation [for me that is coming up fast]. I hope to be around to chime in on next designs as well. Please don't take it as much of a criticism but friendly notes on how to improve it. Here are my remarks: The logo on top green bar is vertically aligned to nothing. It would be pleasing on the eye if at least the paper icon looked vertically centered. And if possible, center text vertically as well (as done in previous versions). If you are talking about the logo itself, we do not have any choice. We must follow the design for logo external use as outlined on our wiki design page[1]. The logo is centered on each panel, if it is not, then, yes, it should be centered. As for goodlooking professional texts these usually have slightly smaller text with greater line spacing. IMHO 10,5 pt with 120% line spacing and 0.14 cm spacing below the paragraph looks fine. Although I don't think I would ever use Liberation fonts myself. We are trying to use fonts that are easily accessible to our members. The brochure is for external community use and the Liberation font is only a design suggestion. This is not the case with the official brochure where the font is specific and should be used. Right now we have 3 different greens on the page (front page logo, front page text and border). We should reduce it to one (or two, if one has to be pale). As for the white first page, saving ink is a good reason. But right now it looks kind of dull. Maybe if we would add a colorful image with all the icons flying out of LibreOffice box or something slightly fancy. Or use even more white (see linked file). Not sure if adding more objects on the brochure would make it print friendly. During our tests, we found that keeping to the LibreOffice design colors (greens) gave the best result as far as balancing the look and being easy on ink. These brochures will be printed on home printers for community, LUG, or small print runs. The panel positions on A4 doesn't exactly match, the positions from left should be 0,6 (was 0,51), 10,5 and 20,4 cm (was 20,48). And since you use panels the page text column gutter is not set, otherwise it should be double the border, 0,51 * 2 = 1,02 cm. Or was it to match up for the space lost when folding? (29,7−8,71⋅3)/6 = 0,595 (29,7−8,71⋅3)/6⋅3+8,71 = 10,495 (29,7−8,71⋅3)/6⋅5+8,71⋅2 = 20,395 We could play with the margin settings to make them better, sure, but in the end, the folding of the brochure needed enough space to allow for , as you say, space lost when folding. These will most likely be folded by hand. Feel free to modify the margins if this will make it easier to fold. We have to be careful as not to leave so little margin space that the folding will get harder to do. Again, these are community brochures. Since you use panels you could delete the bottom bar images and color the panel bottom border, which would make the problem of hiding images go away. I think I tried that, do you mean making the page itself green and the frame would then sit on the top? Maybe you could make a sample brochure of all these changes and show us? Liberation Sans is one of the fonts that are installed with LO, correct? We could add that to the template. We do not want to suggest any font that need to be installed by the user post-install of LibreOffice itself. I know of one template that told you to use an Adobe font and those are expensive to purchase. Liberation Sans is free and should have been installed at the same time as LibreOffice was on a Windows and/or Linux system. I do not know about Mac's install, since I do not own one. That font looks good and it is free, just like LibreOffice. I have printed the community design out on pastel green paper using a monochrome laser printer. The brochure looks nice that way. But, if you want the green text and images printed, then some off white, bright white, or light pastel paper would well for my inkjet printer tests. The whole idea is to make a brochure easily printable for the home and/or home/office user to print and hand out them. The official brochure design needs the use of a professional printing service to make good quality copies. Our local marketers, like me, have very little budget to use to make, print, or buy their marketing materials. Being able to print a nice looking brochure on the low priced inkjet and monochrome laser printers is a need. If they are lucky, the marketing person has access to an inkjet printer that prints directly onto

Please don't take it as much of a criticism but friendly notes on how to improve it. Just to be honest about the way the green logo design was started, I [Tim L. in the USA] created the original green brochure design for my community based needs that print well on my inkjet and blackwhile laser printers. Then Marc Paré took that design and tweaked it. Since I use the standard Letter size paper in the USA and most of the rest of the world uses the A4 standard paper, we needed to have two different versions, since the three frames/columns per size of the paper would be different sizes. To be perfectly honest, I could print my brochures in A4 but the only paper of that size I can get is a copy paper quality of paper and not any heavier weight that would be used for brochures. Also that A4 size copy paper costs about three times the price of the letter size copy paper quality of paper I can get from the same source or even locally in the big box office supply stores. Here are my remarks: The logo on top green bar is vertically aligned to nothing. It would be pleasing on the eye if at least the paper icon looked vertically centered. And if possible, center text vertically as well (as done in previous versions). Are you saying that you see the green logos are not centered on the columns/panels/frames? Those logos should be centered on each panel of the brochure, except for the panel on the far right. The green bar on the bottom balances the design on the page - .i.e. it looks better with them in my opinion. When the content is added to the template, you should see the logo and the template text centered in the column/frame. The actual text content would look great using a full justification in its text frame/cell but you have to deal with the word spacing issues and may need to do some manual hyphenations to make it look good. Having content text centered, and not justified [left, right, full] does not look professional in some cases and with some types of content. As for goodlooking professional texts these usually have slightly smaller text with greater line spacing. IMHO 10,5 pt with 120% line spacing and 0.14 cm spacing below the paragraph looks fine. Although I don't think I would ever use Liberation fonts myself. The text size needs to be large enough for easy reading. Sometimes the 120% line spacing works, while others it does not. Personally, I do not know how to set the 0.14 cm spacing after a paragraph. I tend to modify the font size of a blank line between paragraphs to get the needed spacing. Right now we have 3 different greens on the page (front page logo, front page text and border). We should reduce it to one (or two, if one has to be pale). The 3 greens maybe an issue for some, but that is a design issue with branded colors. The green logo is the exact green color of the new splash screen and that color was used for the logo. I was not the first to use that color. The green of the traditional logo on the far right panel has been used since the 3.3.x days. The text color either uses green 1 the main color uses. Or green 0 which is darker and sometimes looks better than green 1 for text. So yes, there may be several green colors, but it is all about using the current colors of the current logo and splash or web page colors. The you use the best branded green for the readability of the text. The darker green, for me, looks better in most situations. As for the white first page, saving ink is a good reason. But right now it looks kind of dull. Maybe if we would add a colorful image with all the icons flying out of LibreOffice box or something slightly fancy. Or use even more white (see linked file). Yes the far right panel, i.e. front panel, does not use a background color. It is not the saving of the ink but the look it has after you print the color background on standard home/office inkjet printers. Large blocks of a single color does not print well with all of the different inkjets I used. I use to have a color laser, and a printed background tended not to look well either in most cases I had to deal with. Sometimes, I even had small bits of the toner flack off on the heavy weight paper used for brochures - i.e. cover stock weights. I downloaded your file but it does not show anything like you stated except a single icon on the bottom of the left panel. I do not know how professional icons flying out of the logo box would be. The panel positions on A4 doesn't exactly match, the positions from left should be 0,6 (was 0,51), 10,5 and

Both the color and monochrome printing works well for those I have shown it to locally. On 04/06/2013 06:03 PM, Marc Paré wrote: Le 05/04/13 02:39 PM, Kracked_P_P---webmaster a écrit : It was suggested that I post this updated Green Community Logo version, of the brochure, to the design list. Someone suggested to me that things were getting lost in the discussions going on, both online and offline. https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Brochure-lo-4-letter-size--v8-green-logo--no-tdf.odt Thanks Tim. Maybe next time we could include some Lorem Ipsum text instead! :-) But, seriously, the text in this example still needs to be corrected and is in need of some changes. So please do not look at the text, but let's work on the template design. But please do not use the pamphlet as is, we will be putting the text through a final proofing on the marketing list!!! Just to put this more into context and to put all of the suggested pamphlet template files on one thread -- Tim has test-tried the other community pamphlet templates suggested in our other threads and has found that, except for the ink-saver pamphlet[1], where there were not problems, the other two that I had suggested[2][3] presented problems with ink-bleed-through the page, more expensive, and showed shadows of the other side of the page due to the amount of black background used in the templates. I have also tried them, but have only laser printers and could not try ink-jet. My laser prints were not bad, but I can well imagine that the results would be quite different on ink-jet printers which are more in use than lasers. So, OK, let's totally eliminate my two proposals. The ink-saver pamphlet, while it does work, is IMO, not that appealing. I am not sure if we would be defeating the purpose of a pamphlet if the first impression we leave is that the pamphlet is in need of beautifying. From a marketing point of view this would not be our objective, we want the reader to concentrate on the pamphlet's text. Tim is now suggesting that we go back to our original community pamphlet template which works[4], and is not hard on ink, the bleed-through is not a consideration. I have changed my view on this and will agree with Tim, that we should keep to the proven community template, with the community logo. This will be easier on printing costs for our members/groups who wish to print off some pamphlets, while allowing for the offset printing of our official pamphlets. Comments?
