 Hi,
I have started a Whiteboard that is about weeding out the options. The
proposal is far from finished (maybe three percent), but already the
wiki page is getting to be very long and unwieldy.
Does anyone have good Layout/structuring ideas for this case?
Especially, if those ideas are easy to implement with wiki mark-up,
 I'd love to hear.
 The proposal starts here:
 http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Whiteboards/OptionsRework .
Click on the Kill link to get to the first part of the actual proposal.

Wow, that's a *very* good start ...

 Please note:
 * I am not really looking for too much feedback from others right now
 (but feel free)

I hold back ;-) Just tell whether when some feedback is more helpful. I
found some minor description issues, e.g. the tooltips appearance isn't
configurable, but the length of the description (but since LibO doesn't
ship the offline help package per default, this checkbox does nothing
as far as I know ... another issue, not related).

 * it is /not/ linked to from the Whiteboards page on purpose
(Reason for both: this work is not even half complete so far.)

Sounds very good - but we may add those whiteboards and mark them
accordingly (to be honest: I also created some half-finished
descriptions, since developers were not interested anymore ... so I
moved to other topics as well).

One thing that might be related - I once started the Improved Options
during the OOo UX times. That time, we didn't care about the single
options (that would have been a follow-up activity), but the usability
of the options panel.

All information, requirements, ... are here:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/User_Experience/Improved_Options

It's already a bit old, but maybe migrating some content (I can have a
look what authors contributed) may be worth the effort. To me, it nicely
corresponds to your work.

One last comment: We also have some additional options in the
configuration files. So if we decide to kill things, it might be
possible to move them out of sight, or in the configuration files - if
required in rare cases.

Thanks!

Cheers,
Christoph

Re: [libreoffice-design] Evaluation of options

Hello back.

 Wow, that's a *very* good start ...

Thanks.

I hold back ;-) Just tell whether when some feedback is more helpful. I
found some minor description issues, e.g. the tooltips appearance isn't
configurable, but the length of the description (but since LibO doesn't
ship the offline help package per default, this checkbox does nothing

I just checked again and my description is correct: the Help tips
check box lets you completely turn off tooltips. (The Extended
option activates the long tooltips.)
And yes, I had the same idea about what the problem with non-appearing
extended tips could be already – which you just implicitly verified.

Sounds very good - but we may add those whiteboards and mark them
accordingly (to be honest: I also created some half-finished
descriptions, since developers were not interested anymore ... so I
moved to other topics as well).

Before we can do that we'd have to clarify what actually is an
official proposal from our side, I suppose. For now, when I feel more
confident in the content on the new Whiteboard page, I'll create a
link to it.

All information, requirements, ... are here:
 http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/User_Experience/Improved_Options

Ah, I had seen that page before ... now I know where my inspiration
came from (besides André's mail about the grid lines). I'll link to
it, at least.

It's already a bit old, but maybe migrating some content (I can have a
look what authors contributed) may be worth the effort.

Authors are you, Mirek2 (who is in the LibO community) and one Jason
Baron (whom I don't know). Relicensing Jason Baron's work could be a
mess*. But the migration idea sounds sensible as we don't know for how
long the Ooo wiki is going to last. Some Ooo websites, such as EIS and
Gullfoss, are down already. Let's hope the bugzilla and the wiki
remain (both seem very valuable to me).

One last comment: We also have some additional options in the
configuration files. So if we decide to kill things, it might be
possible to move them out of sight, or in the configuration files - if
 required in rare cases.

Yes, additionally there should be an entry point to the configuration
files from the application (what I call the advanced options panel in
the wiki).

Best regards,
Astron.
