And what do you think if one sets a background image via the context menu, and replies Yes on the question "Apply to all slides?".. Master slide changes.. Or change a style of outline text via a context menu. Not to speak about all the editing that users always can do to override/change any master slide setting. I second Italo, at least about advantage of Modes Tab Bar. IMHO it is worth the cost of vertical space. Although the icon Display Mode is beautiful, changing the mode through Display Mode requires 3 mouse motions (a click, small move, and another click). You are talking about mode toolbar with Rotate, Flip, 3D Rotation, Circle perspective etc.? Cannot imagine that many people use it for presentations, but maybe when Impress is the tool for drawing scenes. Anyway, you can enable the toolbar via View > Toolbars and dock it somewhere (or you customize your own toolbar with only the relevant functions). After the next start this toolbar should be there again.
