[Bug 38547] battery monitor time display bad
Public bug reported: Affects: gnome-applets (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: I am running Ubuntu 5.10 with all installed packages up to date on a Dell Latitude D610 notebook (I'm very impressed by how easy it was to set up, by the way, considering this is a laptop and all). My batter power monitor gives terrible time estimates; for instance, while my battery takes about 20 minutes to fully charge usually, it often estimates that it will take 600+ hours to charge. This bug is not 100% reproducible, but I have observed it multiple times. -- battery monitor time display bad https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/38547 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 27897] Weird name when using usb disk with dapper
Public bug reported: Affects: hal (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: Medium Status: Needs Info Description: I've been trying out dapper for a few days, and I've been using my usb hdd with music on it to listen to music while I'm on the dapper computer. But when I fired it up today and inserted the hdd the icon that apperas on the desktop got some weird characters in it (I can't type them here, so I'll attach a screenshot), instead of the normal 37 GB Media that its usually called. [Bug 36946] Re: Screen Resolution tool (gnome-display-properties) does not change refresh rate, resolution in Dapper
I have the same problem. I have a laptop which I use in several locations where I have several different external monitors that I like to use alongside the laptop's panel. Last year I installed Breezy and added these lines to the Section Device for ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]: Option AGPMode 4 Option AGPFastWrite True Option EnablePageFlipTrue Option MergedFB True Option CRT2Position RightOf Option MetaModes 1400x1050 1400x1050-1280x1024 1400x1050-800x600 1400x1050-640x480 When I dist-upgraded to Dapper last week , initially X would not start at all. Something had overwritten xorg.conf. I re-added the lines above and as a result I can use any of the external monitors *IF* I start X with that external monitor connected. However, I cannot use System|Preferences|Screen_Resolution_Preferences|Resolution to change the resolution. When I click Apply, the dialog box closes and, simply, nothing happens. xrandr -s does work, though. -- Screen Resolution tool (gnome-display-properties) does not change refresh rate, resolution in Dapper https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/36946 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 34667] Re: [Bug 34667] Re: ISO-8859-1 Support Missing
Sorry for the poorly worded bug report. Here's a step-by-step way to reproduce the issue. Convert a filename to iso-8859-1. Archive it. Extract it. This will simulate the scenario where a user archives an iso-8859-1 file, sends it to their friend, who is using a utf-8 encoded filesystem. The friend extracts the file and is unable to view the filename correctly. The ubuntu utf8-migration-tool is supposed to fix this problem, but it is a one-use tool, and does not fix filenames that a user comes across during their everyday work. Add the universe repository: http://easylinux.info/wiki/Ubuntu#How_to_add_extra_repositories sudo apt-get install convmv cd ~/Desktop mkdir testdir cd testdir gedit björk.txt Save the file, and close gedit. convmv -f utf-8 -t iso-8859-1 -r --notest björk.txt cd .. tar -czf fûnkyarchive.tar.gz testdir convmv -f utf-8 -t iso-8859-1 -r --notest fûnkyarchive.tar.gz rm -r testdir Use Nautilus and File-Roller to extract the file. The result is that the archive and the archived file both have iso-8859-1 encoded filenames, which are unviewable in the default ubuntu utf-8 encoded filesystem, and must be manually converted to view correctly. File-roller and Nautilus should be able to view alternate encoded filenames and convert extracted filenames on the fly. Note that Rox-Filer is currently able to view multiple filename encodings. I've created a Nautilus-script that performs the conversion, but this is a cumbersome tool for most users. Thank you for looking into this! [Bug 38436] Re: Iagno menu item has a confusing tooltip
Upstream says: Iagno is Reversi which is also Othello. Othello is by far the most recognised name, but it is trademarked. Instead of going for Reversi the author decided to use a really bad pun (which I happen to like) for the name. It is very little different from Aisleriot's Play many different solitaire games. The name is an cute anagram, so the purpose has to be described in the tooltip. In the end it is the age old problem for menu labels of branding vs. describing functionality. The usual solution to this problem is to relabel the menu item to use both i.e. Iagno to Iagno Reversi. However I think this is silly. I also don't want to change the name. While I have removed a lot of the explicit GNOME branding, I have tried to keep the more whimsical names (actually, almost anything that wasn't GNOME-something or g-something) like Aisleriot and Iagno. For the record, since I suspect that you (like 90% of this planet) haven't been to the sort of school that teaches Shakespeare, Iago is the bad-guy in the play Othello. The name was then gnome-ified by adding the 'n'. I'm personally happy with it and I don't think I want to create a diff and have to change the translations every time there's a new upstream release. ** Changed in: gnome-games (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Rejected -- Iagno menu item has a confusing tooltip https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/38436 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 13199] Re: Drag n' Drop directories from File-Roller is somewhat tricky
I'm using file-roller 2.14.0 but the bug is still there! Actually the file is dropped in the selected window only if you wait enought time with the button pressed, for the file to be decompressed. So if you decompress a 1K file the you can't notice this bug, but if you try to drag and drop a 1GB file you'll have to hold the button for at least 20 minutes! [Bug 38596] Crash when entering Japanese text in a mail
Public bug reported: Affects: evolution (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: Dapper current, using scim-anthy for Japanese input. Create a new mail. Click in the message body, and switch to Japanese input. Type これ (if you have anthy installed, typing kore will do this.) Hit space to finish the unit, and return to select the default option (which is also これ). Evolution crashes. I've repeated this at least half a dozen times. [Bug 38441] Re: Default application for audio CD shouldn't be sound-juicer
Out of the three reasons, only the first one is valid. - rhythmbox has no command line option to start on the CD that's a rhythmbox bug. - rhythmbox UI is not intuitive for CD playing for users according to desktop team opinion MacOSX does just that. Inserting a CD opens iTunes and is available in the sidebar, exactly like Rhythmbox. - you can changing the app to start to system, preferences, disks and removable media That's too hidden for ubuntu target who just want to be able to have an insert and play solution in ubuntu. Still even with an eventually non-broken sound-juicer, the user experience is poor. double clicking on a track edit the track title instead of playing it. Why not putting back the simple gnome music player? I'll open another bug report concerning the impossibility to play the selected track in sound-juicer in another bug, with the debug log. -- Default application for audio CD shouldn't be sound-juicer https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/38441 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
