[Bug 47897] Re: [Bug 47897] Re: can't start gnome

2006-06-03 Thread thib
I am sorry I can't tell you more ionformations to help you to resolve
that bug because i solve it by erasing my ~/.gnome and ~/.gnome
directories. And stoping to use the option save the changes in
system then sessions so the bug is probably coming from it.

Le vendredi 02 juin 2006 à 08:41 +, Daniel Holbach a écrit :
Thanks for your bug report. Can you check your ~/.xsession-errors and
try to start GNOME with the failsafe option? Can you switch to a
terminal and see if the 'lo' interface is configured (type ifconfig lo)
and check the system date set?

[Bug 48183] Misinterpretation of an NTP sync as idle activity

2006-06-03 Thread Nicolas Maquet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

gnome-screensaver misinterprets arbitrary clock changes as being periods
of inactivity. Hence, when changing the clock in the forward direction
for more than the configured timeout, the screensaver launches.

This is a rather minor bug, I admit, but I encounter this all the time
because my motherboard battery is dead and I have to resync every bootup

[Bug 29061] Re: Theme schemas corrupted or missing

2006-06-03 Thread Uphaar Agrawalla
$ gconftool-2 -g /desktop/gnome/interface/gtk_theme
/apps/metacity/general/theme /desktop/gnome/interface/icon_theme
Human
Human
Human

My theme was also ruined, but that was fixed by removing metacity
completely and reinstalling it.

The applets on the panel were also messed up at the same time - the
window list applet had disappeared and would not get added back. Had to
do a re-install of gnome-panel and gnome-applets to get it back.

Also, gnome-terminal behaviour changed - it's now having a yellow
background instead of white, not having the menu bar anymore.

To add to all this, I'm unable to run any apps from the menu, as when I enter
the user password I get a dialog saying: Failed to run disks-admin as user
root:
Wrong password. - it happens for all apps under System-Admin menu. If I run
it from terminal using sudo, it works fine. Not sure if it's a different bug,
so pls. let me know and I'll fine a seperate report.

All these things started happening at the same time suddenly, which is
why I think they might be related.

I'm currently running the final Dapper release. Started having the issue
suddenly one day (I was running Flight 7 then). It was fine the day
before, but started acting strange on the next day.

In a nutshell, it seems a whole lot of my settings got messed suddenly.

[Bug 35222] Re: make clear to users that devices need to be unmount before beeing unpluged

2006-06-03 Thread loftx
I have noticed this too - the problem is the user might not realize this
delayed write (async?) behavior is used and think their files have
finished copying when in fact it hasn't actually started.

Possibly a dialog should pop up when a USB disk is mounted with
something like This device uses delayed write: Any changes will be made
when the device is unmounted. Make sure to unmount the device before
disconnecting the cable or removing the device

Also as an aside - why is the delayed write used - it's not the default
behaviour in Windows (where you can just remove the device once the file
copy dialog disappears) and could be confusing for migrating users.

[Bug 48198] drivemount: regression: audio CDs no longer displayed

2006-06-03 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
Public bug reported:

since dapper, drivemount no longer displays in the list of drives CD
drives containing audio CDs.
I think it's because it has been decided to hide drives that the user cannot
mount.

In the case of audio CDs, it's a regression IMO, because:

1. you can no longer click the drive and select Play CD, option which was
introduced in 2.12, so beginner users will have as only solution to
eject/reintroduce the CD to get it to play if they don't know which program is
used to play audio CDs.

2. you can no longer eject the CD using the drivemount applet. you must use the
button on the CD drive. imagine explaining to a beginner that he must use the
drivemount applet to eject CDs... unless if it's an audioCD. then he must use
the button on the drive. it's confusing.

I think the new behaviour should be changed: don't display drives that can't be
mounted, unless they are audioCDs. Always display audioCDs (like in breezy).

I first reported this bug in GNOME bugzilla but it seems it's ubuntu
specific so I report it here.

on my laptop and my desktop with different results.

The CD produced is perfect on both machines, and only on my desktop do I
have the issue of the error message appearing after the burn has
completed. I hadn't tested on laptop before.

Could it be an issue with my model of CD burner on the desktop? Both
drives are DVD+RW. I don't have issues burning iso images or data.

Output from commandline on desktop when a blank is not found:

There's no output of this kind when used on the laptop.

Drive details:

[Bug 48226] Autohide bugs

2006-06-03 Thread jmspeex
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I'm noticing two (probably related) problems with the panel in autohide mode.
Both seem to have to do with timing:
1) Sometimes when the panel un-hides, it jumps to the top of the screen (I have
it at the bottom) so I need to move it down. This typically happens about twice
a day.
2) When clicking on the main menu button, sometimes the panel hides itself and
the menu pops up too low -- the bottom of the menu is aligned with the bottom
of the screen instead of the top of the (still un-hiden) panel.
In both these cases, it seems to happen when un-hiding the panel (or bringing
up the menu) requires a disk access (swap or files not in OS cache), causing a
slight delay. That's why I'd say it's probably timing-related.

[Bug 48175] Partition editor freezes on the install

2006-06-03 Thread Virtuall
Public bug reported:

Yesterday I tried to install Dapper on a completely blank PC. I planned
to install Windows later too, so I made 4 partitions in GParted (all
primary), formatted the 1st one as ext3 and the third one as fat32. And
the installer (and the whole system) simply froze when it reached the
partitioner. After trying two more times, I deleted the fat32 partition
and it started simply working!

BTW, I have experienced this before, with another Ubuntu version, on
another PC and another HDD!

Just recreated the situation - and it's all the same. No FAT32 partition

[Bug 48229] Partition table destroyed when resizing NTFS

2006-06-03 Thread Andrew Whalan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gparted

Hardware: Toshiba M30 Laptop

Please describe the problem:
When installing ubuntu dapper, I used the gparted 0.1 to try to resize my
partitions as the default setup for the laptop from the restore CD.

After resizing the 80g NTFS partition into 40gig NTFS + 38gig EXT3 +
2gig swap, the partition table showed as corrupted with one 80gig
partition in black, and two 0 size partitions also marked in black.

This only appears to be a resize issue, creating partitions apperars to
work fine.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Backup all data (you'll lose it)
2. Reinstall XP from restore CD
3. After configured, start installing ubuntu or similar
4. Run gparted, try to resize drives.
5. I hope you backed up

Actual results:
Partition table is corrupted, laptop won't boot. All data lost (tho manual
recovery may be possible) ... and the terrorists win.

Expected results:
NTFS partition to be resized and the other partitions created correctly.

Does this happen every time?
Yes, although wiping the partitions and starting over with a blank partition
table seems to work ok.

Other information:
Due to everyone else having no problems, I'd figure this is a hardware/bios
specific issue, but due to the nature of it (and the fact that I lost
everything on my laptop, which was backed-up as reminded to by jdub) it is
incredibly important that this model laptop be excluded from using the tool to
resize ntfs partitions until resolved!

Which debug output?

For some of the translated strings (usually glade ones) you need to set

Please try the SVN version, alot of small fixes were commited there.

Simple tutorial to get latest version:

sudo apt-get install subversion

[Bug 48234] totem-xine crashes on startup

2006-06-03 Thread Jacob
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem-xine

When opening totem (xine) without any parameters, it will crash after loading
the GUI. Loading totem with a movie or song will work fine.
On startup, totem will load the GUI, and then a blue screen will appear where
movies normally are. The blue screen appears for only about 1/10 of a second,
then totem crashes. No error messages appear on the crash.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install totem-xine
2. Applications Sound Video Totem
3. Watch the crash.

Terminal output:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ totem
The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 66 error_code 11 request_code 141 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Running totem --sync produces no additional output.

In breezy, kpilot, jpilot worked AOK. I upgraded to dapper Major sync
problems with my Zire 31. Very vary occasional syncs succeed most just
hang with no output error and eventually time out. Going back to my
breezy install sync works great again. Tries the same with

pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyUSB1 -l

same as with kpilot jpilot. So its not the apps, its pilot-xfer or
below and there don't seem a lot of dependencies.

Thought I would just chip in - One this one is sorted I am diving into

[Bug 48180] System - Prefernces - About Me does not work

2006-06-03 Thread David Courtney
Public bug reported:

Simply go to System - Preferences - About Me and fill out the form as
you would normally expect. Type data in the first field, press tab to
go to the next field and fill it out, press tab to go to the next field
to fill it out, and so on...

There is no OK option, or Apply, or Finish or anything like that.
There is only a Close button and a Help button. If you click
Close, all your input is lost. If you click Help, nothing happens
at all.

I noticed if I typed my e-mail address into the home field and pressed
the Enter key and THEN clicked Close that the input was saved.
However, when I went back into About Me, the e-mail address had actually
been saved as the work e-mail address.

[Bug 31517] Re: hal-device-manager does not load

2006-06-03 Thread kidr
Well, I no longer get the errors, though the solution doesn't satisfy
me.

The errors went away after I removed my firewire pci card from my
computer. Now everything else works except the sound, which I had
assumed was caused by the same hal problem, but apparently I was
mistaken.

On the firewire card it says Radius inc. firewire pci 2330, but in the
computer it would show up as Texas Instruments LYNX Compatible 1394
something or other...

Just to make sure it was the firewire card I put the card back into the
computer and the errors came back again. This makes me sad, as I had
hoped to use my external DVD burner with ubuntu.

[Bug 48294] $http_proxy being set incorrectly by Network Proxy

2006-06-03 Thread Mary Gardiner
Public bug reported:

If I have these settings in System - Network Proxy, $http_proxy is
being set incorrectly:

[NOT SELECTED] Direct internet connection

[NOT SELECTED] Manual proxy configuration
HTTP proxy: sunhill, port: 3128

[SELECTED] Automatic proxy configuration
Autoconfiguration URL: http://www.it.usyd.edu.au/proxy.pac

Even though Manual proxy configuration is not selected and the text is greyed
out as per the screenshot I will attach, the following happens when I open new
terminals with those settings in place:
$ echo $http_proxy
http://sunhill:3128/

I know that $http_proxy can't be set from the autoconfiguration URL, but
the GUI's use of radio buttons and greying out suggests that it should
*not* fall back to the manual configuration to set $http_proxy, yet it
does. (In my case this behaviour is not only counterintuitive but also
an actual bug in and of itself -- that manual setting is left over from
a previous network.)

[Bug 22501] Re: [Bug 22501] Re: serpentine couldnt start to burn

I just install it to /usr/local, but no other serpentine was installed.
But the error there is failling to convert, right?

Do you visit GUADEC? I will be there and you or somebody else who like
could test it directly on my computer.
Unfornutely not :( Would love to though.

[Bug 48294] Re: $http_proxy being set incorrectly by Network Proxy

2006-06-03 Thread Andrew Bennetts
I've never used the Manual proxy configuration, but I have set
Automatic proxy configuration. This is what my $http_proxy is set to:

$ echo $http_proxy
http://:8080/

Which is clearly wrong.

[Bug 33072] Re: Pulling AC plug suspends computer

2006-06-03 Thread BrendanWood
I just upgraded my laptop (compaq presario v2000) to dapper (from
Breezy) and now my machine is going into suspend when I pull the power
cord. I have never seen this behavior until going to dapper.

I am happy to provide any debug/log/whatever output to help
troubleshoot.

This is somewhat annoying (to say the least).
