[Bug 76632] Re: screen does not unlock after locking
Hello, Sorry, my previous comment was a case of cutpaste gone very wrong. I can confirm that the problem persists. However, installing Feisty from SCRATCH, and doing all of the updates at once, the problem is _not_ there. I think this is an important piece of information - could it be that the problem only shows for incremental updates? Can anybody else confirm this? [Bug 29425] Re: rectangular buttons in titlebar
Apparently aesthetics doesn't matter. Once again, the default theme should attempt to be aesthetically pleasing and functional for a given target audience (yet to be defined.) Since free software is infinitely customizable, I suggest that the user apply their own theme to meet their needs. Ultimately there are _many_ problems with the wide buttons. A few possible reasons for this are: 1) It is particular to one individual. What if someone wants them smaller or even wider still -- is the design pattern subject to the whim of whomever decides to place a bug report? 2) Aesthetically, the wide buttons create inconsistencies with the rest of the look -- notice the aspect ratio in comparison with an average distribution of buttons across the look. 3) For an average user with average motor controls, the current button size is more than adequate. Perhaps this would be more well suited for an accessibility look? [Bug 27855] Adding user with the administrator profile does not add them to the 'users' group
Public bug reported: I've added users to my computer using the GNOME Users and Groups tool and set them to the Administrator profile. However, now they in the adm group and not the users group. For the time being, I've manually added them to the users group, but I'm not sure if this is the intended use of this group and nothing else seemed suitable. Plus, when I add more users, I'll have to be sure to do this again. A group to categorize all the users added to the system would be nice, e.g. for creating permissions for a folder that everyone should be able to browse. (A user in adm can, of course, sudo it or something, but that's hardly a good solution.) In such a case, a user for administrative purposes would be a member of both, so the adm group would be a subset of the users group. Filing by proxy. Original report follows: From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Forward of moderated message Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2006 08:22:04 +0100 Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: Michal J. Gajda [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Ubuntu Bug Tracking System [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: gnome-terminal blocks X input in specific circumstances Date: Mon, 02 Oct 2006 12:24:37 +0200 X-Mailer: reportbug 3.18ubuntu1 Package: gnome-terminal Version: 2.14.2-0ubuntu1 Severity: normal There is a particular combination of menu commands that causes gnome-terminal to block X input until it is killed. It may be sometimes necessary to do a full reboot to regain control of the system. The symptoms are: 1. Mouse pointer moves as usual, but no clicks are registered. 2. Background windows are still repainted (in my case: gnome-panel). 3. You need to kill gnome-terminal or X to regain control. Steps to replicate the error: 1. Make a new terminal profile that takes a while to open (Using EditProfiles and New button.) Call it 'Blocker'. You can use ssh to server that silently drops SYN packets. 2. Use FileOpen TabBlocker once. 3. While the tab is opened but empty, open FileOpen Tab directing mouse pointer to Blocker entry, but NOT clicking it. 3. When the Blocker tab closes (because trying to connect to server failed), the menu will stop to be repainted and gnome-terminal will block X input. I occasionally have similar problem with the gnome-panel that stops receiving input and at the same time it somehow prevents from switching windows and workspaces so I'm stuck with the input to just a single application window. This looks like it may be also metacity problem or related to some under-the-hood shared Gnome component which blocks indefinitely (and shouldn't). -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers dapper-updates APT policy: (500, 'dapper-updates'), (500, 'dapper-security'), (500, 'dapper') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.16.20 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages gnome-terminal depends on: ii gnome-control-center 1:2.14.2-0ubuntu1 utilities to configure the GNOME d ii gnome-terminal-data 2.14.2-0ubuntu1Data files for the GNOME terminal ii libatk1.0-0 1.11.4-0ubuntu1The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libbonobo2-0 2.14.0-0ubuntu2Bonobo CORBA interfaces library ii libc6 2.3.6-0ubuntu20GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libgconf2-4 2.14.0-1ubuntu2GNOME configuration database syste ii libglade2-0 1:2.5.1-2ubuntu2 library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-0 2.10.3-0ubuntu1The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome2-0 2.14.1-0ubuntu2The GNOME 2 library - runtime file ii libgnomeui-0 2.14.1-0ubuntu3The GNOME 2 libraries (User Interf ii libgnomevfs2-02.14.2-0ubuntu1GNOME virtual file-system (runtime ii libgtk2.0-0 2.8.20-0ubuntu1The GTK+ graphical user interface ii liblaunchpad-integrat 0.1.3 library for launchpad integration ii liborbit2 1:2.14.0-0ubuntu1 libraries for ORBit2 - a CORBA ORB ii libpango1.0-0 1.12.3-0ubuntu3Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpopt0 1.7-5 lib for parsing cmdline parameters ii libstartup-notificati 0.8-1ubuntu1 library for program launch feedbac ii libvte4 1:0.12.2-0ubuntu1 Terminal emulator widget for GTK+ ii libx11-6 2:1.0.0-0ubuntu9 X11 client-side library ii libxrender1 1:0.9.0.2-0ubuntu2 X Rendering Extension client libra ii scrollkeeper 0.3.14-11ubuntu6 A free electronic cataloging syste Versions of packages gnome-terminal recommends: ii yelp 2.14.3-0ubuntu1 Help browser for GNOME 2 -- no debconf information ** Changed in: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium Assignee: (unassigned) = Ubuntu Desktop Bugs ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #388924 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=388924 ** Also affects: gnome-terminal (upstream) via http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=388924 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- gnome-terminal blocks X input when a tab is closed while the menu is open https://launchpad.net/bugs/65732 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com

[Bug 67152] WEP doesn't work when setting key using network-admin
Public bug reported: Summary: When configure a WEP key using network-admin, it is correctly displayed by iwconfig, yet WEP does not work. If I configure the exact same key using iwconfig, it works. This is with a D-Link DWL-G520 PCI 802.11g adapter under Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, with all packages up-to-date as of yesterday. I have reproduced this rather strange behavior several times. Here is what I do: Let's say my WEP key is c90fef4410778eb1e5e8835977 (that's not my actual key, but it is in the same hex format). I choose System/Administration/Networking from the menu bar In the Network settings window, it says Wireless connection The interface ath0 is active I click properties; the Interface properties window pops up. The Network name (ESSID) setting shows multiple choices, one of which is the correct ESSID for my network (gson). I choose it. I leave Key type at its default of Hexadecimal In the WEP key box, I enter c90fef4410778eb1e5e8835977. I click OK A message window saying Activating interface ath0 pops up and stays up for a long time, about 90 seconds. When it disappears, the Network settings window still says The interface ath0 is active, but I have no DHCP lease and no connectivity. I try running dhclient ath0 manually, but it also fails to get a lease. I run iwconfig ath0. It prints: ath0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:gson Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 00:0D:88:EB:BA:CA Bit Rate:36 Mb/s Tx-Power:18 dBm Sensitivity=0/3 Retry:off RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:C90F-EF44-1077-8EB1-E5E8-8359-77 Security mode:restricted Power Management:off Link Quality=16/94 Signal level=-79 dBm Noise level=-95 dBm Rx invalid nwid:1 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:7 I try setting the key manually from the command line with iwconfig ath0 key c90fef4410778eb1e5e8835977. I run iwconfig ath0 again. It prints exactly the same output as last time, including the exact same key (I verified this using diff): ath0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:gson Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 00:0D:88:EB:BA:CA Bit Rate:36 Mb/s Tx-Power:18 dBm Sensitivity=0/3 Retry:off RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:C90F-EF44-1077-8EB1-E5E8-8359-77 Security mode:restricted Power Management:off Link Quality=16/94 Signal level=-79 dBm Noise level=-95 dBm Rx invalid nwid:1 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:7 I again run dhclient ath0 manually, and this time it gets a lease, even though the configuration according to iwconfig ath0 is exactly the same as when it failed. The only difference is that I set the key manually inbetween (to the same value it already had). Here's the lspci -v output for the card: :02:01.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. [Bug 67378] users-admin does not check usernames for reserved system names/groups
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools In the Ubuntu debian-installer, it checks for reserved names such as 'admin', ie. you can't use admin as the username when creating the first user. The Gnome Users and Groups allows you to create a user called admin. If users shouldn't create users called 'admin', then users-admin should not allow it. I mark this as a security vulnerability, because it affects system security. When a user might unwittingly add a user called admin (which is quite plausible), and then remove the user again for some reason, then the group 'admin' will be gone too, which means that no one on the system will have sudo root access, and updates won't take place, causing even more potential problems. ** Affects: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: Medium Assignee: Ubuntu Desktop Bugs Status: Rejected -- users-admin does not check usernames for reserved system names/groups https://launchpad.net/bugs/67378 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
