[Bug 131286] Re: Cannot play BBC Live TMS Scorecard

2007-08-25 Thread Russel Winder
Unfortunately, a specific URL only exists whilst the game being
reported is actually being played. So testing can only happen when a
game is being reported. (The BBC pipe their radio commentary and an
information display feed to a game specific URL.) Fortunately, the BBC
are always reporting on some game, as long as one is being played
somewhere, so it is a question of going to the main cricket page and
then finding the currently in use URL.

I haven't tried them with the GStreamer version to see if they exhibit
the same problems, they appear to work fine under the Xine version, but
the BBC do have various video/audio articles on the sport main page
(http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport). Again specific URLs change on a daily
basis but there is always something there.

The BBC help page is currently:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/video_and_audio/help_guide/4304501.stm,
but I guess this might change as well :-)

The bug system should not be used as a support tracker, it's meant to

2007-08-25 Thread Áron Sisak
Which language do you want to use Glade-3 in? I tested and could use it in
Hungarian without any problems.
The fact that Glade-3 language files are not from Rosetta does not mean they
are not / they cannot be translated.

[Bug 134686] alt-tab partially broken with focus-follows-mouse

2007-08-25 Thread Peter Clifton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

With latest gutsy:

Set focus-follows-mouse mode in Systems-Preferences-Windows

If you have your mouse (and focus) over (say) a terminal winow directly
on top of the desktop, then close the terminal winow - landing your
mouse ontop of the desktop, I find alt-tab no longer works.

If you then click onto the desktop, alt-tab works again.

I've noticed this doesn't seem to happen if you drop the mouse pointer
very close to the right-hand edge of the desktop.

[Bug 134598] Re: .pot file is not generated on build time

2007-08-25 Thread Carlos Perelló Marín
I'm one of the Launchpad developers in charge of Launchpad Translations.

The fact that Glade-3 language files are not from Launchpad means that
they will not appear in language packs and thus, the application will be
untranslated in all languages. That's because glade-3 is in main and we
remove all translations to use the ones from Language packs.

Right now, in Gutsy you have glade-3 half translated because some
libraries provide translations, but the glade-3 specific strings are not
translated at all.

This works in Feisty because that package is in universe and the
translations are not removed.

That is: information concerning the problem is collected, after which

look I'm not being funny, but you really are missing the point!

eog should NOT be blocking while it waits for dbus, are you saying if dbus
fails they
whole system should fail?

and by what reckoning do you make dbus a *vital* component
Ubuntu will run quite happily without it (except for very slow
starting of eog)

Watching dbus via qdbusviewer dbus is not used very much, yes useful to have

[Bug 134640] [Feisty] Sound Juicer plays noise instead of music

2007-08-25 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

New Feisty install. Asus A8N5X motherboard, CD/DVD drive reported by
Device Manager as: LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S.

When I try to play a CD with Sound Juicer, the disk tracks are
identified correctly but instead of music I get rhythmic noise. Sounds a
bit like radio static.

MP3s and XVIDS play correctly. VLC won't identify the tracks, but plays
the CD correctly.

I've tried both the on-board sound 'card', NVidia CK804/RealTek ALC850
Rev 0, and an old Aureal Vortex PCI card. Same results with both.

I've got this stuff installed:

gstreamer0.10-alsa
gstreamer0.10-esd
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse
gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse

Workaround: If I try to play a DVD in the drive (won't play, I don't
have DeCSS), then remove it and re-insert a CD, Sound Juicer will play
the CD correctly. But I have to do this every time I reboot; it's not
really a fix.

I've googled, and haven't found any identified cause or fix. A couple of
other people on the Ubuntu forums seem to have the same problem, but
it's rare.

[Bug 134704] mixer_applet2 wakes up to often (as shown by powertop)

2007-08-25 Thread Mike Fedyk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

this bug effects all applications relying on dbus. dbus cease to respond

2007-08-25 Thread durilka
Riccardo,

Looks like powernowd has two parts. Kernel module(s) and the client
daemon or whatever. If apt-get removal doesn't help you - your problem
is kernel modules. Oops. I have similar case with some of the kernel
modules, computer hangs when playing video and the problem is one of the
kernel modules. Unfortunately I don't know which and even though I have
lots of them blacklisted they get automatically loaded. Like you, after
booting I have to run script which does bunch of rmmod's and that helps.

Justin, I guess I can say that I have no more freezes. Only deadhangs,
but that's another story ;-=--)

[Bug 132283] Re: feisty: metacity: inconsistent window maximize behavior

2007-08-25 Thread Brian Hart
I tested with Gutsy Tribe 5; the problem no longer occurs there. I
tested with both gedit and Firefox. In both cases, opening new child
windows from a maximal-height window results in a child window that can
be freely moved and resized.

The inconsistent behaviour is gone, and I think the inconsistency was
resolved in the right direction. I suspect the common use case is: User
immediately wants to resize or move a new child window. Maximized
constrains resize or move, so I think avoiding maximized for new windows
is the Right Thing.

I'm satisfied with the Gutsy behaviour. Thank you Sebastien!

[Bug 131973] Re: desktop random freezes in feisty

2007-08-25 Thread IVIisterX
Hi alltogether,

I have the problem with freezes at random times too.
My configuration is:
ASUS P4C800 Deluxe Mainboard BIOS-Version: 1019.002 AMI-BIOS, Intel P4 2,6 GHz,
1024 MB RAM, ATI 9700 PRO, 160 GB Hitachi SATA-HDD as bootmedium, USB Keyboard
and USB Maus from Logitech.
I found out, that the freezes are associated with the following settings:

Without any changes at the Ubuntu Feisty Fawn Alternate-installation my
machine freezes with the Kernel 2.6.20-15-generic, 2.6.20-16-generic and
2.6.20-16-386. To get more stability I have to change
1. The Bios-Setting ACPI 2.0 support from disabled to enabled.
2. Uninstall powernowd
3. Install the ATI-driver 8.39.4
With these settings and Kernel 2.6.20-15-generic my machine runs without any
freezes; with the kernels 2.6.20-16-generic and 2.6.20-16-386 my machine
freezes within 30 minutes max.

If I add the additional kernel parameters noapic nolapic irqpoll ht=on my
machine freezes a few minutes after reboot with various programs.
If I uninstall the restricted graphics driver my machine freezes a few minutes
after disabling and with all kernels above-mentioned and various programs.

While I am writing this comment I test the sudo /etc/init.d/powernowd
stop with kernel 2.6.20-16-generic - it still works.

Best regards

Thank you.

Changing gstreamer-properties default output to X Window System
(No Xv) (ximagesink) has solved the problem.

The system consists of an MSI KM266 mainboard with VT8378 S3
UniChrome integrated video (bleeding edge it isn't!). Does the job.

Thanks again.

What videocard and driver do you use? Does changing
gstreamer-properties
videosink to x11 fixes the bug?

[Bug 134779] Cannot run custom launcher

2007-08-25 Thread Justin Dugger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have a custom application launcher, so that I can connect to a remote screen
session at the click of a button. It's a simple command:
   ssh -t cislinux.cis.ksu.edu screen -d -r

Recently, this stopped working for gutsy. When I click on it, an error message
pops up, saying:
   Could not launch application
failed to execute child process -x (no such file or directory)

My guess is that -x tells gnome term to execute a program, and that
somehow the launcher has lost the gnome-terminal part.

[Bug 131973] Re: desktop random freezes in feisty

2007-08-25 Thread Riccardo Lucchese
Yes, you are right durilka: basically there are some kmodules that
enable cpu frequency scaling and the userspace daemons. Therefore is it
interesting that removing powernowd the machine still freezes.

!!! Before a few months ago I never experienced such problems: so there
must be some commit (possibly to the kernel modules [and some random
ACPI code]) that broke my configuration and many others.

[Bug 4229] Re: Totem receives BadAlloc when playing very large movies using Xv

2007-08-25 Thread Thomas Pryds
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 35229 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/35229

This happens for me, too. I've just done a clean install of Gutsy Herd
5, and did all updates. I get the same error as above (note that the
error which this error points to as a duplicate deals with a
BadRequest error instead of a BadAlloc as here). I get the error
with all players I tried (totem, vlc, mplayer). Here's the output from
totem when trying to play a 720p mov video file from Apple's trailer
site (my screen resolution is 1280x800, using the 915resolution
package):

Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 56 error_code 11 request_code 140 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
aborting...
Aborted (core dumped)

[Bug 41682] Re: CD burner does not respect burn speed?

2007-08-25 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
I'm sure that this is still here (I've just tested Gutsy Tribe 4). Here's the
output from a machine with a better CD burner:
launching command: wodim dev=/dev/scd0 -v blank=fast
wodim stderr: scsidev: '/dev/scd0'
wodim stderr: devname: '/dev/scd0'
snip
launching command: wodim fs=16m speed=28 dev=/dev/scd0 -eject -dao
driveropts=burnfree -v -data -nopad /tmp/image.iso.R2H1XT
wodim stderr: scsidev: '/dev/scd0'

Notice how the speed is not passed to the blanking section but it is
passed to the image burning phase.

that monitor will not power off in Compiz after timeout. In Gutsy, when
I try to restart x with ctl-alt-bkspace, it blanks all of the panels and
hangs with the desktop background showing. At this stage, it will not
respond to anything, total lockup. I can power down with the power
button and it boots back up fine.

In normal operation, I can shutdown, but restart locks up the system.

In Feisty, I can run metacity to get the monitor wo work properly in
power management mode, but in Gutsy, if I try to replace Compiz with
metacity, I end up with white screens and lockup.

[Bug 134809] Re: [gutsy] Gnome restart does not work in Tribe-5

2007-08-25 Thread TJ
Confirmed with Gutsy Tribe-5 32-bit.

After pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace the desktop clears to just the
background image. Occasional hard-disk activity (judging by LED
flashes), Caps-Lock, Scroll-Lock, Num-Lock don't respond - LEDs don't
toggle, cannot switch to virtual console using Ctl+Alt+F1 through F5,
and CPU usage hits a constant 100% (judging by CPU fan running at
maximum). Ctl+Alt+SysReq does seem to be handled.

/var/log/kern.log does show:

kernel: [ 7219.076000] SysRq : HELP : loglevel0-8 reBoot Crashdump tErm
Full kIll saK showMem Nice powerOff showPc show-all-timers(Q) unRaw Sync
showTasks Unmount shoW-blocked-tasks

which seems to indicate the Ctl+Alt+SysReq was being handled.

/var/log/syslog shows:

gdm[5815]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error -
Restarting :0

[Bug 133272] Re: Icon in title bar and maximize/restore/close icons not displaying correctly

2007-08-25 Thread EmigrantMTChris
Sorry for the late response, I've been out of town for the past week.

Yes, I'm still getting this bug. I tried changing the themes, and it
appears on all of them. I'm reinstalling tonight with a fresh install of
tribe 5 to see if I still get the bug. I'm backing up my home folder, so
let me know if there are any config files in there that you would like
to have me post.

[Bug 129029] Re: [Gutsy Tribe-5] No Sound on Login Screen or during Login

2007-08-25 Thread TJ
This issue is caused by wholesale changes to gnome-session between
Feisty (gnome-session-2.18) and Gutsy (gnome-session-2.19.90) in gnome-
session/gsm-sound.c

It appears to be a side-effect of the removal of the dependency on
esound/ESD.

[Bug 129029] Re: [Gutsy Tribe-5] No Sound on Login Screen or during Login

2007-08-25 Thread TJ
I'm hoping the desktop team will give this a high priority, because
although it is only an aural cosmetic touch, I think the Ubuntu brand
recognition is very much tied to the distinctive login sounds.

Unless The Gnome developers upstream deal with it quickly, there are 2
options:

1) revert to gnome-session 2.1.18
2) undo the changes to gsm-sound.c

[Bug 129029] Re: [Gutsy Tribe-5] No Sound on Login Screen or during Login

2007-08-25 Thread TJ
I've used the temporary work-around of removing the Gutsy gnome-session
2.19.90 and installing the Feisty 2.18.0 version.

In my previous comment I mistyped the version - it should of course have
been 2.18.0, not 2.1.18!

1. Download the Feisty gnome-session v2.18.0 package
2. Uninstall the Gutsy gnome-session v2.19.90 package
3. Install gnome-session v2.18.0
4. Edit the apt preferences file to pin gnome-session so it won't be
accidentally updated

At the GDM log-in prompt *before* logging in, switch to a virtual
terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, and log-in the do the following:

$ wget
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/g/gnome-session/gnome-session_2.18.0-0ubuntu3_i386.deb
$ sudo apt-get remove gnome-session
$ sudo dpkg -i gnome-session_2.18.0-0ubuntu3_i386.deb
$ sudo nano /etc/apt/preferences

Add the following 2 lines then save the file and exit with Ctrl+X:

  Package: gnome-session
  Pin: version 2.18.*

Put ubuntu-desktop back:

$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

Now switch back to the GDM log-in screen using Ctrl+Alt+F7 and log-in.
You should hear the login sound.

[Bug 129029] Re: [Gutsy Tribe-5] No Sound on Login Screen or during Login

2007-08-25 Thread TJ
I neglected to mention in the previous comment about how to use gnome-
session v2.18.0 that it will cause some functionality to be lost; such
as access to the Suspend Hibernate options and some of the new
Accessibility / Assistive Technology functionality.
