[Bug 146946] Re: [gutsy] Gnome settings daemon does randomly not work

2007-11-18 Thread patrick_g
I encounter this bug in Gutsy (clean install and normal kernel) just after the
login. This is the third or fourth time that I have found this bug and I would
like to mention here.
Just after the login there is an error popup (in french) and the icon theme of
my system is changed.
You can see a screenshot of my screen here (note that the icon theme is not the
normal ubuntu theme) :
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2173/2042090445_1cc8341abc_b.jpg

The translation of the error message is :

There was an error during the startup of the Gnome preference daemon.
Some features, like themes, sounds or wallpapers may not operate correctly.
The last error message was :

Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-f55Haym6uz :
Conection denied

Gnome will try to restart the preference daemon the next time you log
in.

When i restart everything is fine (no error message and the ubuntu theme is
normal).
The frequency of this bug is (roughly) one per ten boot.

Click once, enter your user name and hit enter. Click it again, enter

I told you something wrong. In the case it blanks I loose the cursor.
No chance to find the prompt.

[Bug 163518] .desktop files say OnlyShowIn=GNOME, should be NotShowIn=KDE;

2007-11-18 Thread Vincent
Public bug reported:

The gnome-utils are perfectly useful in an Xfce environment, however,
they are set to only be displayed in Gnome.

gnome-search-tool.desktop, baobab.desktop, gnome-system-log.desktop,
gnome-dictionary.desktop, gfloppy.desktop and gnome-screenshot.desktop
*all* contain OnlyShowIn=GNOME .

As said, they can equally well be used in Xfce, so in that case it would
have to be NotShowIn=KDE; . I even think these apps may be useful in a
KDE environment too, so perhaps even that shouldn't be there.

[Bug 153922] Re: Nautilus hangs on mouse over icons of MP3s

2007-11-18 Thread Jérôme Guelfucci
Sorry for the late reply. I had to reinstall everything on this laptop
due to a buggy experimental sagem fast 800 driver which * the whole
system. Now I can't reproduce this behaviour anymore, even without
esound... Sorry guys, it seems that you'll have to rely on Pavel

But I clearly remember that esound solved the issue and that it crashed

[Bug 163525] Can't log back in after hibernate

2007-11-18 Thread tomm174
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

After I hibernate my ubuntu machine I cannot log back in to the X session.
A dialog comes up offering : switch user/cancel/unlock. If I attempt unlock,
it fails returns to the same dialog.
Logging in on a vterm (Ctrl-Alt-F1) enabled me to check /var/logs/auth.log,
which shows an authentication failure in the screensaver, and killing the
screensaver process let me back into the session. This was happening
consistently for quite a while whenever I hibernated. Now I have disabled the
screensaver, and the problem has gone. I have the impression that I found a
message somewhere that suggested that the screensaver process was unable to
read the input stream, but i can't now find it.

I have new 64Bit (AMD 6000+) computer, originally I installed Ubuntu

software (I use) for 64 bit machines, I had to reinstall Ubuntu @ 32

(?). Now Totem will not play a DVD with with sound, sometimes it does not
play at all. I have done many 32 bit/64 bit reinstalls, reformatted all

2007-11-18 Thread Rob Schmersel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sound-juicer

sound-juicer will randomly crash every time. It works without problems
when ripping to OGG or FLAC

[Bug 163545] GTK file save dialog: not able to save file withouth renaming using breadcrumbs

2007-11-18 Thread narr
Public bug reported:

For example: I want to download a file. The suggested path by the dialog
is /home/user/downloads/project1/. But I want to save the file to
downloads, preserving the suggested name. So I click on 'downloads' as a
parent directory in the breadcrumbs - and now I click save. I'm
redirected to project1, again, instead of the file being saved, because
project1 is selected. It is not even possbile to deselect project1
somehow (for example by clicking on some white space).

The only way to save it in downloads is to click on user, click on
downloads (NOT in the breadcrumbs), and NOW click safe - it works
because project1 is not selected.

I hope you get what I mean. You can of course try the same thing using
Gedit for saving a file or any other gtk program...

If I press Ctrl+Space in the file browser,I cannot rename a file or

completely disappear from the desktop, leaving only the background image
displayed.

Additionally, switching to an alternate viewport using the cube plugin
erases all the current windows from the viewswitcher (when in another
viewport) and any further windows opened are displayed as being on desk
1. On switching back to desk 1, the windows from desk 2 disappear
and the original ones for desk 1 are redisplayed.

I am not entirely sure if this is just a compiz problem or something
more fundamental.

[Bug 151145] Re: Evince print fails with Postscript driver

2007-11-18 Thread Dmtiry Shatrov
Evince doesn't print for me, too. I've got a fairly fresh Ubuntu 7.10 install
and HP1018 printer.
The printer didn't work out of the box, so I had to follow instructions at
http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/
Now, gedit prints fine, kpdf prints fine, and evince doesn't print anything at
all. The printing dialog appears as usual, nothing is grayed out, but after
pressing the print button nothing happens.

Additionally, the workspace switcher (when on another desk, for example

desk 1 with no relevance to the workspace you are in. Perhaps this is
just a problem with the workspace switcher redrawing itself?

[Bug 145524] Re: Splash screen typo error

2007-11-18 Thread Toby Smithe
I do not believe this is the intention of the image. The image is there
to inform the user that the software was released as a release
candidate, not a release condadidate. Thus this is not fine, and
the bug is valid.

The bug report referenced above has not been updated since December
2006, so I don't think any activity will be happening there; let alone
any tracking.

I would confirm this report, but I don't believe I have the authority,
so I'm setting it back to New.

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2007-11-18 Thread John Toliver
I notice it happens when I reboot, and no resolution changes, nor have I
added anything new to the panel. Two Icons on the far left simply
appeared in interchanged positions. For example, the icons were in
position 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 before reboot, and after reboot they are in
position 1-2-3-4-5-7-6. Again all icons are locked. This happens on
kernel 2.6.22-14 generic, gnome 2.20.1. Please advise if more
information required.

[Bug 163609] Initialising MTP plugin takes a long time; probably doesn't even work

2007-11-18 Thread Alex Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

If I enable the Portable Players - MTP plugin, I see this in an
strace, repeated thousands and thousands of times. The UI hangs until it
decides it has had enough, then the plugin is active. I have no idea
if it actually works, as I don't own an MTP device.

This behaviour also happens when starting up Rhythmbox with the MTP
plugin active. It takes tens of seconds to start up as a result.

gettimeofday({1195406122, 113969}, NULL) = 0
writev(17, [{l\1\0\1\22\0\0\0\\f\0\0\247\0\0\0\1\1o\0*\0\0\0/org/fr..., 184},
{\r\0\0\0usb.vendor_id\0, 18}], 2) = 202
gettimeofday({1195406122, 114187}, NULL) = 0
poll([{fd=17, events=POLLIN, revents=POLLIN}], 1, 25000) = 1

Disabling the MTP plugin alleviates the problem.

[Bug 120587] open dialog does not show File System item for root

2007-11-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

In Feisty, normally I see several items (bookmarks) at the left side of GTK+
open dialog (e.g. in gedit):
my_home_folder
Desktop
File System
Floppy Drive
Network Servers

But when I run gksudo gedit, then the open dialog contain only these
bookmarks:
Root
Desktop
Network Servers

Note that Root is home of root user, not the root of file system.

The File System item is missing, this is an annoying when I use it
frequently to edit configuration in /etc/...

[Bug 112518] Re: Switch User freezes at blank screen

2007-11-18 Thread iblackburn
The invisible login prompt is a similar but different bug. I've come
across both. The initial bug froze the computer completely and required
a hard reboot. I've not experienced this problem since I adjusted the
SyncToVblank setting in compiz. I do occasionally get the invisible
login prompt and am able to log in and continue as usual. Hope this
helps.

[Bug 163311] system monitor shows significantly incorrect memory usage

2007-11-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

System monitor shows these values on its Resources page:

User memory: 290.3 MB of 503.7 MB
Used swap: 257.5 MB of 517.7 MB

but on the Processes page I see (when I sort records on the Memory
column descending):

7.7 MB
5.4 MB
4.1 MB
3.1 MB
2.8 MB
1.9 MB
1.4 MB
1.3 MB
1.1 MB
989.9 KB
965.2 KB
769.3 KB
704.9 KB

32.0 KB

so its sum is about 37.51 MB.

So one of these values must be very wrong.

This situation is seen after Firefox and LinuxDC++ was running and then closed.
Maybe
some allocated memory was not properly put back?

[Bug 163451] Unable to run GNOME Font Editor in Ubuntu 7.10

2007-11-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm not a techno-nerd, but I would like to present the bug here: I
still use Windows ME, and allocated more than half my available main
hard-drive space for Ubuntu, which is the first-ever Linux OS that I
have used. Whenever I click on the drop-down list for GNOME Font
Viewer located from the taskbar Applications/Other location, nothing
happens! I want to preview my fonts, and am frustrated over this. Is
the problem in my computer and its native OS, or is this quirk in the

[Bug 162936] Re: why does ubuntu see 2 cpu when i have only one?

2007-11-18 Thread Thomas Babut
It's not a bug, it's a feature. :)

You see 2 processors, because of the hyper-threading technology from Intel. You
can read more about this here:

And I don't see an excessive CPU load in your top output.

[Bug 163636] There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon ocassionally when Gnome starts

2007-11-18 Thread jasbur
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-desktop-environment

I will occasionally get this error message on my Gutsy install:

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

The last error message was:

Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application
did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply,
the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

I have seen other similar bug reports. But, they seem to mostly refer to
the Fiesty release and/or the status is listed as Fix Released.

I have gotten this error on two fresh installs of Gutsy with and without
all updated packages. It seems to occur somewhat randomly and and reboot
always seems to fix it.

Hardware:
Toshiba A-105 Laptop
Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB DDR2 RAM
160 GB SATA HD
Intel GMA945 Graphics Card

[Bug 163640] nautilus browser icon is unsharp when using bigger size versions

2007-11-18 Thread Benjamin_L
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

continuing my awn unsharp icon tour, I found another one, namely the
browser mode icon.

Description from the first bug:
I'm currently experimenting with Avant Window Navigator on latest hardy and awn
uses big icons for everything so icon's that are not available as scalable or
bigger ones are quite obvious as they are unsharp and not very pretty.

I'll continue to report icon bugs as I discover them.

[Bug 32089] Re: Non-i18n date formatting in Evolution time edit fields

2007-11-18 Thread Pawel Stolowski
I found someone reported this problem on Ubuntu Forums and found a workaround:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=586410highlight=evolution+date+format

The problem seems to be related to locale definitions (e.g.
/usr/share/i18n/pl_PL) and was introduced in Ubuntu Gutsy - Evolution
worked fine in Feisty. As a workaround you may use locale definition
from Feisty, or just patch LC_TIME definition in the appropriate file
for you language with the one from Feisty.

Maybe it deserves a separate bug report for locales?

[Bug 163658] LG Laptop hangs HARD (in Gutsy, but also in Feisty)

2007-11-18 Thread peruron
Public bug reported:

My machine often hangs completely - screen stays on, but machine becomes
completely unresponsive - Ctrl+Alt+Del, Alt+SysRQ+B... nothing makes it
budge but a 5-second press on the power button (hard poweroff). Tried
reinstalling, and it even crashed once within the installer (before
partitioning, thankfully). The crashes seem to be random, and
/var/log/messages reports nothing but ---mark--- before the crash
time. Please help :(

[Bug 163082] Re: PDF pages not rendered

2007-11-18 Thread loci
Hi Pedro.

Meanwhile the problem was solved.
Now everything works with evince, including rendering and the zoom factor of
400%.

I have no idea what the problem was, maybe an inconsistent fontconfig state.
Here is what I did:

1. Removed $HOME/.gnome2/evince/ev-metadata.xml
2. Removed directory $HOME/.gnome2/evince
3. Reinstall evince
4. Purge, install evince

At this point the problem changed a bit: evince still did not render anything,
but
it wasted all CPU time as well. Than I decided to use acroread.

5. Installed acroread (don't know, if it can have any effect on evince)
6. Font config: dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig
7. Restarted X

Suddenly realized that evince works!

Although evince opens and shows it now correctly I attach one of the pdf-s
the problem was experied with. Actually evince worked with none of the pdf-s
on my machine.

Thank, and regards,
Roland
