[Bug 164804] Re: Gnome Login Error

2007-12-05 Thread ideasman42
Just to confirm this keeps happening on more then a few of the systems here,
this could be attributed to gconfd-2 or applets I guess...
It seems gconf-d is not stopping and then on reload applets dont work.
killing gconfd-2 and removing temp files with the word gconf in the /tmp dir
seems to fix.

[Bug 172399] Give full screen window focus on multiple screens on mouse over

2007-12-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

A usability/feature request:

I run a duel monitor set up and 98% of the time I only have two programs
open and maximized (firefox and quanta), I code on one screen then
switch to the other to test. Some times I forgot which screen has focus
and just randomly start typing to fix something.

My proposed solution: If a user has multiple screens and one each screen
there is two maximized windows, focus should be given to the window that
the mouse is hovering over.

Ideally I'd like something that follows what window I'm looking at, and
give focus to it, but that's unrealistic; this is the next best thing I
could think of.

[Bug 174060] Re: crashed on next open after rhythmbox coredumped

2007-12-05 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retarcer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in
a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 174125] Drag-and-drop file into executable

2007-12-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I am using Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon.

It is not possible to drag-and-drop a file into a executable.
This would be an useful feature.

In Microsoft Windows, it is possible to drag-and-drop a file into an
executable and make the executable run with the filename as an command
line argument kinda.

So if you drop photo.jpg into imageviewer.exe then imageviewer would
startup showing photo.jpg by launching imageviewer.exe photo.jpg

[Bug 174016] Middleclick on boomark openes the new tab in the background

2007-12-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Epiphany handels opening bookmarks in new tabs different than Firefox.
Usually, when you open a bookmark in a new tab via a click on the
mousewheel, a new active tab gets opened, with the bookmark as content.
Epiphany instead opens links from my bookmarks in the background.

This is quite inconvenient. When I browse the web, it's nice to open
links you might find interesting in new tabs in the background. This way
you browse e.g. through a news page and open article after article in
the background. After browsing the mainpage you read the articles inside
the tab. But when i open a page from my bookmarks I want it active now.
I don't want to look through my list if open tabs to find it.

Firefox uses two about:config keys to define the way bookmarks/links
are opened.

browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground = false
browser.tabs.loadInBackground = true

These keys exist also in Epiphany with the same values. But Epiphany
ignores the browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground key.

[Bug 174191] screensavers cause high CPU usage

2007-12-05 Thread Gene Caldwell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I have been running Ubuntu for 3 years now and have waited patiently for
the screen savers to get much needed attention. I have been experiencing
100% CPU usage for the majority of the installed screen savers and can't
believe no one has noticed this as a problem yet. I started using Ubuntu
5.04 and this problem existed back then, and has existed in every single
release I have run including the current Gutsy release. There are
several screen savers that do not cause this 100% CPU usage, so I have
been careful to change the default behavior on every single install of
Ubuntu I have made to avoid burning up my computer. This is a bug
because a screensaver should not burn up the CPU while trying to save a
screen from getting a burn in from being left for days of non use. Since
I have installed Ubuntu on as many as 20 different computers, using
every release since 5.04 I do not think its a driver problem,
configuration problem, or hardware problem. I do not think Ubuntu should
ever ship any screen savers that cause 100% CPU usage and not place a
system monitor on the desktop to show the user that their CPU is racing
for hours and hours on end while they are sleeping because the default
configuration is to randomize screen savers while they are away. There
is alot to test when releasing an OS, I know, but I have seen this
problem on every single ubuntu computer I have looked at for the past 3
years.

[Bug 174191] Re: screensavers cause high CPU usage

2007-12-05 Thread Gene Caldwell
Actually you may very well be correct on my second part of the problem.
However I am not sure why that makes it less a bug because it only lasts
for 30 minutes before it goes to sleep ? why on earth would an
application designed to be green friendly race the CPU until it goes
to sleep ?

Second, I already know that I need to select a more PC friendly screen
saver, thats why I have reported the bug (doh ! ) ( :P ), however the
less curious people that are just now switching to linux will have no
clue that the screen saver they selected is racing the CPU unless the
have learned the TOP command or know that a CPU system monitor is
available AND that it is not normal for a CPU to race when NOT being
used. - most people don't know that %100 CPU is not good, and most
people would not know that it is happening either.

3rd, hummm, while I have been using Ubuntu for 3+ years now, I have
never been able to get xscreensave to work, I have no desire to be a
linux guru, or expert, just skilled enough to configure use, minor
repairs, etc. My first choice for a screensaver is ElectricSheep, thats
the only screen saver I want and it requires xscreensaver, and I have
never been able to get it to work even though its in the repo, which
leads to a second problem, if its in the repo, then it should work, but
after doing much research, it looks like the only people that are
capable of making ElectricSheep work on a Gnome system are the Linux
gurus.

4th, I have no clue what rss-glx is, but once again, why would removing
this fix the 100% CPU racing problem ? it will still be there in the
code will it not ? it will just remove the problem from my computer if
you are correct, but the bug will still exist in the code. (doh again !
)

So, just to be clear, I am trying to report a bug in the bug reporting
forum, not find a work around to a problem... :) but thanks for
confirming the problem , hehehe,

[Bug 161086] Broken Menu Editor + Menu

2007-12-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Version: Ubuntu 7.10

Menu Editor has the following problems:
  1) When checked, menu Items occasionally auto-uncheck after a second (or
so) delay. What I mean is, I check the item and watch it re-check itself after
a second. Very frustrating. [Reproducability - Often but random]
  2) Checking menu Items doesn't always actually update the actual Menu
Item's visibility and is not synchronized.
 a) Uncheck a menu Item and then view the actual menu. Sometimes the
menu item is hidden (as expected), but not always. Re-load Menu Editor and it
then shows that the menu item is Checked, even though it is not visible in
the actual menu. [Reproducability - Often]
  3) Dragging menu Items to new positions in the Items list causes the Item
to vanish in the Menu Editor. [Reproducability - Always]
  4) Menu Items list buttons for Move Up and Move Down don't do anything.
They should move the selected menu Item up or down as the button indicates.

[Bug 174200] Next Song doesn't work with Last.fm

2007-12-05 Thread Dan Lenski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

First, I would just like to say that I am very happy to see Last.fm
support added to Rhythmbox... thank you!

Now, the one problem I have is that the Next Song button doesn't work
for me! When I am playing my Neighbor Radio stream, if I press the
Next Song button nothing happens other than that button getting grayed
out! The only way to skip a song is to stop and then restart the
stream, which causes a new song to be chosen.

( Because of this bug, as well as the lack of tag and neighbor display,
I mostly use BMPx for listening to Last.fm. I would consider Rhythmbox
to be a much better and more polished player overall, but BMPx does have
the edge in terms of a really nice Last.fm interface. )

[Bug 174192] Status line shows only space left

2007-12-05 Thread Mårten Woxberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I apologize if the terminology is a bit incorrect, I'm using the sv_SE
and not en_GB

If I have the status bar (View/Statusbar) turned on I get information about the
number of files in a specific folder and the total space available to me.
11 objects, free space: 264,2 MB

If you select a number of objects (files and/or folders) you get:
2 folders selected (containing total of 65 objects), 2 other objects selected
(761,6 kB)

I don't like to do a CTRL-A to select everything just to get the total size of
every file in the folder so
I'd like to suggest a change to how the information is presented with no items
selected:
U objects (V folders, X objects using Y space), free space: Z
where U is total number of objects
V is number of folders local or mounted
and X is the number of other files.
Y is their total size
Z is total space left on drive/partition

Also
This information is not available when using list view
Well, it is, until you select a file or folder. Then it gets replaced with:
Filename.extension selected (XXX MB)
It's impossible to not have a file or folder selected in list view as it is
in icon view

Preferably the total size of the folder and or disk/partition could be aligned
right in the status bar so it's always available in the lower
right corner.

[Bug 160190] Re: Evolution cannot authenticate against caldavd

2007-12-05 Thread matt1980
Same issue, exact same symptoms. Mozilla Thunderbird/Lightning works
fine.

Found a workaround though! May not be acceptable for everyone. On your
calendar server installation, disable Digest authentication. Evolution
works fine with only Basic authentication. The nonce count error is
Digest authentication specific. You can do so by changing caldav-
dev.plist as follows:

!-- Digest challenge/response --
keyDigest/key
dict
  keyEnabled/key
  false/ !-- CHANGED --
  keyAlgorithm/key
  stringmd5/string
  keyQop/key
  string/string
/dict
!-- Kerberos/SPNEGO --
keyKerberos/key
dict
  keyEnabled/key
  false/ !-- CHANGED --
  keyServicePrincipal/key
  string/string
/dict

Note the false/ tags, which used to be true/.

Also note that if you do this, you REALLY should also disable or block
non-SSL service, and only use HTTPS (e.g. port 443 or 8443). Otherwise,
your passwords will be sent in clear-text across the network.

Running both Apple Calendar Server and Evolution 2.12.1 on Ubuntu 7.10
(2 different machines). Using Apache 2.2 as a reverse proxy to access
Calendar Server via SSL. With the workaround, both viewing and adding
items works. Without the workaround (with Digest authentication enabled
on the server), no items appear and items cannot be added. Same log
messages as experienced by other reporters.

[Bug 66461] Re: edgy: places-network servers error

2007-12-05 Thread suoko
I have this problem with gutsy.
On my gutsy desktop PC, when I try to open a remote ftp folder which requires
loginpasswd from places, I got the message can't show position ftp://
Error occurred launching the default action command for this position
(translated from italian)

On my gutsy laptop, when I try to open an ftp folder from places, firefox comes
up and I'm asked user and passwd from firefox.
While I have no problem opening remote smb shares from places.

2 things should be considered:
- on the laptop I've installed ubuntuzilla. Could that be the reason for trying
to handle nautilus ftp share?
- ON BOTH PCS I HAVE NO PROBLEMS OPENING REMOTE FTP/SSH/SMB FOLDERS IF I USE
THE SIDE PANEL OF NAUTILUS!!!

[Bug 161091] Synaptic causes multiple menu items

2007-12-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Version: Ubuntu 7.10

When adding or removing software via Synaptic that registers (or un-
registers) Gnome menu items, the Gnome menu list shows duplicates of
menu items when viewed. For example, after installing Wireshark via
Synaptic, my Gnome menu shows duplicates of all existing items such as
under Applications-Internet:

  Evolution Mail
  Evolution Mail
  Firefox Web Browser
  Firefox Web Browser
  Pidgin Internet Messenger
  Pidgin Internet Messenger
  Thunderbird
  Thunderbird
  Wireshark
  Wireshark

[Bug 174191] Re: screensavers cause high CPU usage

2007-12-05 Thread Miguel Martinez
I first wanted to say that I've also seen that behaviour.

Now, I'd also like to point out that the second part of your bug isn't
strictly true. I believe that the default settings blank out the screen
after a certain amount of time (I think it's either 30 minutes or an
hour), so after that time the screensaver will stop draining CPU.
However, having high CPU usage during idle time is not something
desirable on laptops, so it might be interesting to modify the default
blank out time if a laptop is detected.

Finally, three possible workarounds if you want to have screensavers and still
have low CPU usage:
1) Select a specific non-draining screensaver/blank screen (doh!)
2) Substitute gnome-screensaver with xscreensaver. The added configurability
might also help (doh! number one revisited)
3) Uninstall rss-glx. This will remove the 3D screensavers, which are usually
the life-draining ones. (doh! This Miguel guy doesn't look really bright)

Although the freeze is specific to Open Office, I still can't get a

wanted on Ubuntu. The following is a screenshot of what happens when I
