[Bug 164804] Re: Gnome Login Error
Just to confirm this keeps happening on more then a few of the systems here, this could be attributed to gconfd-2 or applets I guess... It seems gconf-d is not stopping and then on reload applets dont work. killing gconfd-2 and removing temp files with the word gconf in the /tmp dir seems to fix. -- Gnome Login Error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/164804 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

You have been subscribed to a public bug: A usability/feature request: I run a duel monitor set up and 98% of the time I only have two programs open and maximized (firefox and quanta), I code on one screen then switch to the other to test. Some times I forgot which screen has focus and just randomly start typing to fix something. My proposed solution: If a user has multiple screens and one each screen there is two maximized windows, focus should be given to the window that the mouse is hovering over. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retarcer. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. [Bug 174016] Middleclick on boomark openes the new tab in the background
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Epiphany handels opening bookmarks in new tabs different than Firefox. Usually, when you open a bookmark in a new tab via a click on the mousewheel, a new active tab gets opened, with the bookmark as content. Epiphany instead opens links from my bookmarks in the background. This is quite inconvenient. When I browse the web, it's nice to open links you might find interesting in new tabs in the background. This way you browse e.g. through a news page and open article after article in the background. After browsing the mainpage you read the articles inside the tab. But when i open a page from my bookmarks I want it active now. I don't want to look through my list if open tabs to find it. Firefox uses two about:config keys to define the way bookmarks/links are opened. browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground = false browser.tabs.loadInBackground = true These keys exist also in Epiphany with the same values. But Epiphany ignores the browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground key. ** Affects: epiphany Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Affects: epiphany (Ubuntu) Importance: Low Assignee: Ubuntu Desktop Bugs (desktop-bugs) Status: Triaged -- Middleclick on boomark openes the new tab in the background https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/174016 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 174191] screensavers cause high CPU usage
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver I have been running Ubuntu for 3 years now and have waited patiently for the screen savers to get much needed attention. I have been experiencing 100% CPU usage for the majority of the installed screen savers and can't believe no one has noticed this as a problem yet. I started using Ubuntu 5.04 and this problem existed back then, and has existed in every single release I have run including the current Gutsy release. There are several screen savers that do not cause this 100% CPU usage, so I have been careful to change the default behavior on every single install of Ubuntu I have made to avoid burning up my computer. This is a bug because a screensaver should not burn up the CPU while trying to save a screen from getting a burn in from being left for days of non use. Since I have installed Ubuntu on as many as 20 different computers, using every release since 5.04 I do not think its a driver problem, configuration problem, or hardware problem. I do not think Ubuntu should ever ship any screen savers that cause 100% CPU usage and not place a system monitor on the desktop to show the user that their CPU is racing for hours and hours on end while they are sleeping because the default configuration is to randomize screen savers while they are away. There is alot to test when releasing an OS, I know, but I have seen this problem on every single ubuntu computer I have looked at for the past 3 years. ** Affects: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- screensavers cause high CPU usage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/174191 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gnome-screensaver in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 174191] Re: screensavers cause high CPU usage
Actually you may very well be correct on my second part of the problem. However I am not sure why that makes it less a bug because it only lasts for 30 minutes before it goes to sleep ? why on earth would an application designed to be green friendly race the CPU until it goes to sleep ? Second, I already know that I need to select a more PC friendly screen saver, thats why I have reported the bug (doh ! ) ( :P ), however the less curious people that are just now switching to linux will have no clue that the screen saver they selected is racing the CPU unless the have learned the TOP command or know that a CPU system monitor is available AND that it is not normal for a CPU to race when NOT being used. - most people don't know that %100 CPU is not good, and most people would not know that it is happening either. 3rd, hummm, while I have been using Ubuntu for 3+ years now, I have never been able to get xscreensave to work, I have no desire to be a linux guru, or expert, just skilled enough to configure use, minor repairs, etc. My first choice for a screensaver is ElectricSheep, thats the only screen saver I want and it requires xscreensaver, and I have never been able to get it to work even though its in the repo, which leads to a second problem, if its in the repo, then it should work, but after doing much research, it looks like the only people that are capable of making ElectricSheep work on a Gnome system are the Linux gurus. 4th, I have no clue what rss-glx is, but once again, why would removing this fix the 100% CPU racing problem ? it will still be there in the code will it not ? it will just remove the problem from my computer if you are correct, but the bug will still exist in the code. (doh again ! ) So, just to be clear, I am trying to report a bug in the bug reporting forum, not find a work around to a problem... :) but thanks for confirming the problem , hehehe, -- screensavers cause high CPU usage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/174191 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gnome-screensaver in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 160190] Re: Evolution cannot authenticate against caldavd
Same issue, exact same symptoms. Mozilla Thunderbird/Lightning works fine. Found a workaround though! May not be acceptable for everyone. On your calendar server installation, disable Digest authentication. Evolution works fine with only Basic authentication. The nonce count error is Digest authentication specific. You can do so by changing caldav- dev.plist as follows: !-- Digest challenge/response -- keyDigest/key dict keyEnabled/key false/ !-- CHANGED -- keyAlgorithm/key stringmd5/string keyQop/key string/string /dict !-- Kerberos/SPNEGO -- keyKerberos/key dict keyEnabled/key false/ !-- CHANGED -- keyServicePrincipal/key string/string /dict Note the false/ tags, which used to be true/. Also note that if you do this, you REALLY should also disable or block non-SSL service, and only use HTTPS (e.g. port 443 or 8443). Otherwise, your passwords will be sent in clear-text across the network. Running both Apple Calendar Server and Evolution 2.12.1 on Ubuntu 7.10 (2 different machines). [Bug 174212] Re: Cannot save file to FTP server (on desktop)
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems. http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). [Bug 161091] Synaptic causes multiple menu items
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Version: Ubuntu 7.10 When adding or removing software via Synaptic that registers (or un- registers) Gnome menu items, the Gnome menu list shows duplicates of menu items when viewed. For example, after installing Wireshark via Synaptic, my Gnome menu shows duplicates of all existing items such as under Applications-Internet: Evolution Mail Evolution Mail Firefox Web Browser Firefox Web Browser Pidgin Internet Messenger Pidgin Internet Messenger Thunderbird Thunderbird Wireshark Wireshark Wireshark (as root) Wireshark (as root) All menus show duplicates and Wireshark was just an example of an application I installed recently that cause the menu to show these duplicates. ** Affects: gnome-menus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Synaptic causes multiple menu items https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/161091 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gnome-menus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 174191] Re: screensavers cause high CPU usage
I first wanted to say that I've also seen that behaviour. Now, I'd also like to point out that the second part of your bug isn't strictly true. I believe that the default settings blank out the screen after a certain amount of time (I think it's either 30 minutes or an hour), so after that time the screensaver will stop draining CPU. However, having high CPU usage during idle time is not something desirable on laptops, so it might be interesting to modify the default blank out time if a laptop is detected. Finally, three possible workarounds if you want to have screensavers and still have low CPU usage: 1) Select a specific non-draining screensaver/blank screen (doh!) 2) Substitute gnome-screensaver with xscreensaver. The added configurability might also help (doh! number one revisited) 3) Uninstall rss-glx. This will remove the 3D screensavers, which are usually the life-draining ones. (doh! [Bug 174212] Re: Cannot save file to FTP server (on desktop)
I also cannot rename the FTP server with a new connection nickname once on the desktop. Although the freeze is specific to Open Office, I still can't get a program like gedit to save directly to FTP. This is a functionality that those two other operation systems have, and definitely one which is wanted on Ubuntu.
