[Bug 136529] Re: Can't log in after upgrading

2008-01-09 Thread Bernhard Sessler
Oh well, it seems my problem regarding the not-starting GNOME session is only
the tip of the iceberg. Remember you told me to remove gdm from being
automatically started at boot time jtholmes? Well, I did this yesterday and
after it didn't work out the way it should, I restored the settings with
update-rc.d gdm defaults. Afterwards I didn't boot the kernel 2.6.24-3
anymore - until now. It seems that the running order of the programs at boot
time has changed now (which isn't a problem at all) and now cupsys gets loaded
before gdm. That shouldn't be a problem, only that now my systems stops booting
when trying to load cupsys and GDM doesn't show up anymore. So I switched to a
console, only to find out that the cups daemons are obviously running, but so
is also the S20cupsys script (which should have long exited by now).
Okay, I thought that maybe it's all the fault of the printer service and
deactivated it (via update-rc.d -f cupsys remove) and rebooted my machine.
GDM started up then, I logged in - and still the GNOME session just stops
loading after a few seconds. So I switched to a console, did ps -e - only to
see that now the NFS autostart script (S20nfs-kernel-service) stopped
responding. The nfsd daemons were loaded, but the script didn't exit. So I also
deactivated nfs, only to see that after a reboot it showed the same behaviour
with the Samba daemons. And now I'm really at a loss here. To me it seems that
the system just doesn't boot completely and maybe that's exactly the problem
with my not-starting GNOME session. I don't know for sure though - for that I'm
just too unexperienced.

[Bug 181420] Re: evolution

2008-01-09 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in
a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 150193] Re: Remote Login via XDMCP is not working in Ubuntu Gusty/7.10

2008-01-09 Thread asis
Sebastien patch works on the following:

Edgy or Feisty to Gutsy (but simple style must be set on Gutsy)
Gusty to Gutsy,Feisty,Edgy (but you must Ctrl-Alt-F1 and 'sudo X :1 -query
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' on the client)

It does not work if style is set as local and one must 'sudo X ...' on gutsy.
I think the final patch should try to solve those issues too.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 135471 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/135471

Good Morning Pedro.
I am correcting your mistake, on the Bug Rep below.
I have read through the Bug Rep, as advertised and have conditions to add.
The reason for the correction is this:
Yes, the Symptoms are similar. However, when trying to Search using the
Category in the Contacts, which I have tailored to suit my requirements, it
has also caused Evolution to crash.
I Click on the Drop-down, which when I then select the Category wanted,
causes the Crash.
Putting a Name, or Part-Name has caused a crash.
Scrolling using the Mouse Wheel has caused a crash.
I need Evolution for Work Requirements, so have little choice in what I can do.
Could you not do a Port of MS Outlook? I have had fewer problems with it,
and despite what you may think, I am being VERY serious.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give, or how this can be fixed.
Regards.

[Bug 123078] Re: System - Quit takes a long time to appear

2008-01-09 Thread Sebastien Bacher
The bug will be fixed when somebody will have a clear description of the
issue and a way to trigger it easily so it can be debugged. The current
comments are not really useful, it's clear some people have the issue
but none of those are able to debug and fix it apparently and there is
not enough informations to allow somebody not having the bug to work
easily on the issue

[Bug 123078] Re: System - Quit takes a long time to appear

2008-01-09 Thread Saïvann Carignan
This bug will be fixed when a developer will find and fix the problem.
Anybody ( that has some programming skills ) can work on this. For your
problem, I'm sure that you can find a solution that doesn't require to
disable GPM. However, I think that you'll get the what you need here :
https://answers.launchpad.net/ rather than in the bug report which
should only contains comments and informations that will help developers
to make fast and proper fixes. If this bug report gets too much comments
that are not directly providing important informations, most probably
that it will be difficult for developers to work on it and fix it.
Thanks for your participation!

[Bug 136529] Re: Can't log in after upgrading

2008-01-09 Thread Pär Lidén
I want to add to jtholmes summary above about the problem: for me
logging in did not work even the first time on the first boot. I had to
try several times before I got a successful login. What did solve the
problem for me however, was putting the computer in uniprocessor mode,
ie. disabling Hyperthreading in my case. What seems to be common for me
and some other people here is that I have an Nvidia graphics card.

Debian bug 455 694 seems to be solved as the source for the

[Bug 150193] Re: Remote Login via XDMCP is not working in Ubuntu Gusty/7.10

2008-01-09 Thread asis
Sorry for my bad english.

1. My server is Gutsy, my client is Feisty.
Let's enable xdmcp on gutsy: System - Administration- Login Window - Remote,
now you can choose between Same as Local (in my tests it never has worked.
Ie: blank screen and back to local machine) and Plain with face browser (here
what i wrongly named simple style).
Feisty connects to Gutsy ONLY if i set Plain with face browser.

2. My server is Gutsy, my client is Gutsy.
On client side I must Ctrl-Alt-F1 and type sudo X :1 -query xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the server ip address. System - Administration-
Login Window -Remote can be set Same as Local. Trying to connect on login
screen (Options- Remote Login via XDMCP) does not work. IE: blank screen and
back to local.

Final note:
All my tests are done setting in my /etc/gdm/gdm.conf

[xdmcp]
Enable=true

otherwise my server is not listed on welcome login screen clicking on

Re: [Bug 181457] Re: PDF documents are not printed

2008-01-09 Thread Walter
No there are no space in the document name.
One of those is a document I get regularly from Swisscom (a phone
provider).
The Problem seem to be quite new!
I was using regularly the print function.
On Monday 7th January I noticed the problem the first time, but I can't
say exactly when I could print correctly the last time (should be around
20th of December).

Kind regards
Walter Frey

[Bug 181478] Hardy Heron Alpha 2 - GDM login screen restarts to infinitum if some process crashes

2008-01-09 Thread pablo_g
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I detected something very annoying yesterday. After login into gdm, and
after the system started new processes, i suddenly noticed that screen
got black and then I saw the GDM login screen again. Then I had to put
the username and retype my password, and then the same problem again. So
I thought that the only way to stop this loop was killing X and then I
had to disable Compiz at startup. So everything was ok, but then again
the same problem when I used a program that I run with Wine, it breaks,
and I got the GDM login screen again. I think that if a program breaks
there is no reason for this with GDM to happen.

2008-01-09 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Re: [Bug 179708] Re: evolution tries to set up when unwanted

2008-01-09 Thread Julian the flat roof repair/recovering specialist
Pedro - thanks for the reply, but it's not a difficulty but an issue
with the way Ubuntu handles processes - if Microsoft can do it better,
then Ubuntu will be shooting itself in the foot which would be a real
shame after so much work has gone into it: I have tried to move over to
Ubuntu but find that there are still obstacles if one is a serious user
(as opposed to soemone who enjoys messing around with computers and
getting round 'difficulties'). There are many areas of Ubuntu where M/S
just has a better 'feel' about their software and things are better
thought through - compare Apple's user friendliness with M/S's - to get
an idea of the difference I'm writing about. Cheers, Julian
