[Bug 217956] Re: totem depends on libtrackerclient (even when tracker is not installed)

2008-04-17 Thread Marcel Stimberg
You're actually right - totem now explicitly depends on totem-plugins
(it was different in the previous version...). This does not seem to me
like a good idea, a set of recommended plugins (as in the description)
should be a recommends not a depends... I therefore mark this bug as
confirmed (although it's a minor problem, see next comment), sorry for
closing it.

Regarding your initial problem: The totem package is only a dummy
package for installing either totem-gstreamer or totem-xine. If you
remove totem and totem-plugins while keeping totem-gstreamer installed,
totem should be running fine...

[Bug 84060] Re: [apport] alacarte crashed with AttributeError in __getPath()

2008-04-17 Thread Tomas Pospisek
Same problem here.

So, it's April 2008 and Hardy is in a hurry to ship.

In my plain ole default installation of Hardy:

- Tomboy crashes on system start (my bugreport was marked invalid wh!)
- F-Spot doesn't even start
- alacarte crashes arbitrarily when I do whatever in it, like moving menu items
up or down or ticking some menu item
(alacarte crashed with AttributeError in __getPath()) and doesn't seem to
be a bug either

And that's the default installation. So if all the bugs posted by the
users are being marked invalid and such, then Hardy will be able to ship
without bugs, which is something Ubuntu can be truly fond of, and users
won't need to report bugs, which is good now I think about it. Is this
too sarkastic or does it actually represent current practice wrt
bugreports?

[Bug 217767] Re: file-roller ignores symbolic links in iso-images when extracting

2008-04-17 Thread kobayashimaru
I just testet file-roller 2.22.0 in the live environment of Ubuntu 8.04.

This time I used ubuntu-8.04-beta-desktop-amd64.iso to reproduce the
bug:

When I open the file ubuntu-8.04-beta-desktop-amd64.iso with file-roller and
open the /dists directory, I see one directory hardy and two files stable
and unstable both with 0 bytes and unknown file type. These are symbolic
links. These should be shown as symbolic links, but that's not so bad.
The bad thing is, when I extract the /dists directory (or the whole
iso-image) onto my hard drive, no symbolic links are created as well. stable
and unstable are created as text/plain files with 0 byte length.
So file-roller has to recognize symbolic links in ISO cd-images and create
those links, when extracting the image.

[Bug 205223] Re: 32bit GdkPixbuf modules not loaded when using ia32-libs

My system was not up to date (I had kernel and hibernate issues, to I
did not update for some weeks).

I now tested in a hardy 64bit chroot on another system (gutsy 64bit),
and I have no issues with stock icons loading, but with the default
ia32-libs from hardy.

Maybe I'll try to dist-upgrade my other system and test again. What did
you do in that new ia32-libs package? Did you modify the gtk2.0-0
package to restore the previous version of 020_immodules-files-d.patch,
021_loader-files-d.patch and rebuild ia32-libs with this?

[Bug 214507] Re: evolution doesn't close properly

2008-04-17 Thread hggdh
Hello ringostar,

Unfortunately the backtrace is missing most of the symbols -- and, as
such, it is unusable.

Perhaps a better option would be to allow apport (the automagic bug
filler) to deal with it.

You should be able to force apport to kick in by sending a (for example)
SIGSEGV to evolution:

$ kill -11 `pidof evolution`

This will send a SIGSEGV to evolution, which should kick apport. Apport
will then propose to open a new bug on Lauchpad. Accept, and refer to
this one (also, please state the SIGSEGV was just a way to get apport to
fill in the bug).

We then should have in launchpad a bug with nice backtraces.

*Before* killing evolution, please also run strace on it:

$ sudo strace -p `pidof evolution` -o evo-trace.log

Let it run for a bit, then kill it upload the resulting log file here.

Thank you.

[Bug 197589] Re: Numeric keypad no longer works after upgrade

2008-04-17 Thread Rob
Sebastien,

like flexR says, the 'allow to control pointer using keyboard' was set
to 'on' after i upgraded wednesday to the latest development, from an
up-to-date gutsy.

Before then i could use numlock, and type on the numeric keypad. After
upgrade i noticed soon that it did not work anymore. Even after a
reboot. I tried to file a bug, but found this bug report and the
workaround described in the post by 'mikko sorri'.

The only specific settings i have made in the past about my keyboard are
that i have use dvorak. But i never touched any other settings.

[Bug 218620] [NEW] rhythmbox problem opening files from file browser

2008-04-17 Thread Recon69
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Well, before I updated on the 17 April when i wanted to listen to a
folder of mp3 files I would just select the files in my browser and
select open with rhythmbox musicplayer. I would get an icon for each
mp3 file in my tool bar as they opened and then all but one rhythmbox
would disappear and my music would play.

Now rhythmbox just opens, if there are several files selected it opens
and does nothing, if I select just one file it plays the last select
music file from rhythmbox not the one I just tried to open.

[Bug 214679] Re: gnome-keyring has unusual behaviour compared to ssh-agent

2008-04-17 Thread Louis-Dominique Dubeau
I have also noticed confusing behavior on the part of ssh-agent and ssh-
add now that gnome-keyring is intervening in the management of ssh keys.
Packages:

gnome-keyring 2.22.1-1
gnome-keyring-manager 2.20.0-0ubuntu2
openssh-client 1:4.7p1-8ubuntu1

Here's a scenario. I've replaced all actual fingerprints with
[fingerprint1]. (It's been a while since I've read the details of
public key crypto so I don't remember what is sensitive from what is
not. I don't know whether fingerprints are sensitive... Better safe
than sorry.)

1.

$ ssh-add -l
[ssh-add gnome-keyring pops a dialog asking for a password. I enter the
password for my ssh identities.]
1024 [fingerprint1] (DSA)

2.

$ ssh-add -l
1024 [fingerprint1] (DSA)

3.

$ ssh-add -D
All identities removed.

4.

$ ssh-add -l
1024 [fingerprint1] (DSA)

5.

$ ssh [to some host for which the key listed by ssh-add -l should allow login]
[At this point ssh asks for the password to unlock the key listed in step 4!]

I see two problems:

A. Like Andrew reported, deleting a key with ssh-add -D does delete it
from the agent, as evidenced by steps 3 and 5, but it is still listed as
present (step 4)! This breaks some of my scripts which rely on ssh-add
-l to know whether a key is present or not.

B. When there are no keys whatsoever in the agent, in step 1 above,
running ssh-add -l makes gnome-keyring ask for a password. This also
breaks scripts which are supposed to run non-interactively. I've
designed my scripts to fail silently if the needed keys are missing.
(It makes sense to do that for the purposes I have with those scripts.)
But the way ssh-add and gnome-keyring interact my scripts are no longer
able to fail silently. I get a prompt in my face when they try to check
whether keys are present.

[Bug 218620] Re: rhythmbox problem opening files from file browser

2008-04-17 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 218620] Re: rhythmbox problem opening files from file browser

2008-04-17 Thread Recon69
well not sure what you more info you need but here goes.

I open a folder music folder using, Places-MP3 ( a saved link to the
folder on my data drive where my mp3 are)

this open a folder that contains all my mp3 files organized in folders
of artist/album

I open the folder that contains the music files I want to listen to by
double clicking the folder.

I right click the mp3 file i want to listen to and select Open With -
Open With RhythmBox Music Player

The rhythmbox window opens.

The last song Rhythmbox was playing starts to play. Not the mp3 file I
right clicked on.

I tried to get someone on the ubuntu+1 channel to try it to check if it
was just my system but no-one would help by trying it. So i dont know
if it's reproducible on a clean install / other install.

[Bug 218655] [NEW] Inserting disc opens CD/DVD Creator when Write to Disc is already open

2008-04-17 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas

Ubuntu Hardy, all updates installed

1. Without having a disc in your CD burner, double-click on an .iso file (such
as an Ubuntu CD image), so that the Write to Disc window appears.

What happens: The CD/DVD Creator window appears.

reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the
development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could
test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of
Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at

[Bug 218652] [NEW] CVE-2008-1686: Multiple speex implementations insufficient boundary checks

2008-04-17 Thread Alexander Konovalenko
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Description

Uncontrolled array index in Speex 1.1.12 and earlier, as used in
libfishsound 0.9.0 and earlier, including Illiminable DirectShow Filters
and Annodex Plugins for Firefox, allows remote attackers to execute
arbitrary code via a header structure containing a negative offset,
which is used to dereference a function pointer.

See:
http://www.ocert.org/advisories/ocert-2008-2.html
http://www.ocert.org/advisories/ocert-2008-004.html

From the oCERT advisory #2008-002:

The libfishsound decoder library incorrectly implements the reference
speex decoder from the Speex library, performing insufficient boundary
checks on a header structure read from user input.

A user controlled field in the header structure is used to build a
function pointer. The libfishsound implementation does not check for
negative values for the field, allowing the function pointer to be
pointed at an arbitary position in memory. This allows remote code
execution.

A patch has been committed to the libfishsound public repository.

Affected version: = 0.9.0

Fixed version: 0.9.1

Additional affected packages:

Speex = 1.1.12, the reference implementation from which libfishsound is
derived.

Illiminable DirectShow Filters, which statically include the
libfishsound library.

Annodex Plugins for Firefox.

Credit: reporter wishes to remain anonymous

CVE: CVE-2008-1686

From the oCERT advisory #2008-004:

The reference speex decoder from the Speex library performs insufficient
boundary checks on a header structure read from user input, this has been
reported in oCERT-2008-002 advisory.

Further investigation showed that several packages include similar code and
are therefore vulnerable.

In order to prevent the usage of incorrect header processing reference code,
the speex_packet_to_header() function has been modified to bound the returned
mode values in Speex = 1.2beta3.2. This change automatically fixes
applications that use the Speex library dynamically.

Affected version:

gstreamer-plugins-good = 0.10.8
SDL_sound = 1.0.1
Speex = 1.1.12 (speexdec)
Sweep = 0.9.2
vorbis-tools = 1.2.0
VLC Media Player = 0.8.6f
xine-lib = 1.1.11.1
XMMS speex plugin

Fixed version:

gstreamer-plugins-good, = 0.10.8 (patched in CVS)
SDL_sound, patched in CVS
Speex = 1.2beta3.2 (patched in CVS)
Sweep = 0.9.3
vorbis-tools, patched in CVS
VLC Media Player, N/A
xine-lib = 1.1.12
XMMS speex plugin, N/A

Credit: see oCERT-2008-002, additionally we would like to thank Tomas Hoger
from the Red Hat Security Response Team for his help in investigating the
issue.

[Bug 218666] [NEW] gnome panel shortcut gives 'Could not lauch application'

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I'm using an up-to-date 8.04 beta.

To recreate:
Open nautilus,
Left-drag a folder (that has a space in it's name) to an empty part of the
gnome-panel to create a shortcut,
Move the shortcut to a different area on the panel using left click.
Try to open the shortcut.

[Bug 206227] Re: vinagre fails to connect

2008-04-17 Thread Emilio Pozuelo Monfort
Please, see bug 218667 where I request an exception to get an update for
gtk-vnc fixing this bug. There's a link to my ppa which has the update,
so please test it and comment on that bug.

Thanks

[Bug 205030] Re: Hardy Heron Login Window startup delay

2008-04-17 Thread Patrice Vetsel
It's very long to launch (about 1min). At launch cursor is set to the time
wit icon, but after 15sec it's set to the arrow. So user don't know what's
happen, why gdmsetup is not launched. Only Geeks ;-) that looks at hdd led
activity can see that something is working hard.
After that gdmsetup pop up. Each launch of gdmsetup is quick after that. The
bug seems to apear only on the very first time using gdmsetup.
Installation is fresh (hardy 20070417 live i386 - RC)

[Bug 218685] [NEW] Rename system sound option in gnome-sound-properties

2008-04-17 Thread Klaus G.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

In the Sound-tab of gnome-sound-properties I have a checkbox called
Play system sounds. One might think that this is a system-wide setting
but in fact it only deals with the below listed sounds. Other system
components like gdm or gnome-power-management will play sounds even if
unchecked.

That's why I suggest to rename the checkbox label and the label for the
sound list to something less ambigious not containing the word system
like Play event sounds or Play notification sounds.

[Bug 217956] Re: totem depends on libtrackerclient (even when tracker is not installed)

2008-04-17 Thread nosilver4u
Yes, but the lib is still there, and still unnecessary baggage. Also, as
Marcel pointed out, a set of 'recommended' plugins should not be a
required dependency, so there is still an issue here, but I'll let you
guys decide what you want to do from here.

[Bug 218703] [NEW] gimp lasso tool freezes X.org

2008-04-17 Thread lightness1024
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

In gimp 2.4.2,
when you use lasso tool for free selection and you let the mouse go out of the
client area of the window (on the KDE taskbar for instance) then X.org freezes.
(bug repeated at least 2 times)
keyboard doesn't respond, nor any display is refreshed except for mouse pointer.
sound goes on in the background and I suppose ssh connection are still
operating.
totally similar to this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/51991

my X.org also has memory leak, and uses 1GB of RAM (application memory,
NOT CACHE MEMORY) after some 8 hours of normal work. (emacs, gimp,
firefox...)

I uses ati drivers from Gutsy and my CG is a X800XT.

Connecting to a mac, updating gtk-vnc to the version in your ppa did change the
error message to Authentication method to host xxx.xxx.xxx:5900 is
unsupported. (30), but did not solve the issue.
(I guess I did not need to reboot after applying the package).

[Bug 201985] Re: evolution does not go online when network reconnects

2008-04-17 Thread James Westby
Hi,

Here is the fix that I sent upstream in the form of a debdiff.
I've tested it here, and if I knock myself off the network I get
taken offline, and then it reconnects when the network
comes back up, which didn't happen before. --offline still works
as well in my tests.

I haven't had a reaction either way from upstream yet.

Thanks,

James

[Bug 120452] Re: freeze on right click Properties

2008-04-17 Thread saumoon
In my case, such problem only happens on Hardy (Linux ubuntu
2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 13:23:42 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux),
especially when I was trying to modify the default player for media
files. But on Gutsy everything just works fine.

So...still no solutions ?

[Bug 218725] [NEW] rhythmbox tries to play CD before all track information is downloaded

2008-04-17 Thread Samantha Davis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I'm running Sound Juicer and Rhythmbox to import my CD collection into
Ubuntu 8.04.

What happens is when I insert a CD that I want to rip it is opened by
rhythmbox and sometimes rhythmbox tries to play it. The problem with
this is that it often tries to play it before it is done fetching the CD
track information causing the read head of the CD drive to franticly
seek back and fourth between tracks trying to both scan the disk and
play the media.

This is also a problem when I open rhythmbox while sound juicer is
ripping a disk; the head franticly seeks between the ripping and the
scanning.
