[Bug 229454] [NEW] First load always shows error and .dvd files have no voice

2008-05-12 Thread Nick Verbeck
I am also seeing gnome-system-monitor showing inacurate Memory usage all
around. The Line Graph shows less then 50% usage and the Pie Graph shows
33% usage but when I view memory usage in TOP I get a very diffrent
result. A much lower result of free memory.

This is a clean install on a base system(Not a VM).

[Bug 228991] [NEW] gvfs changes the modified date when copying files

2008-05-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Gnome-VFS did not change the modified date meta data field for copied files.
Gfvs does, though. As copying files is no modification, this should not happen.

Keeping the original modified date is especially important when copying
files from an external source, like a digital camera's memory card, or a
usb stick.

Steps to reproduce:
Copy a file and paste it somewhere else. The modified date of those two files
will not be the same. The new file will have the current date and time as its
modified date.

[Bug 229465] [NEW] Wide text in wide VTE windows is extremely slow

2008-05-12 Thread Alexey Spiridonov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libvte9

This refers to the Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy version of vte (0.16.9). However, I
just built vte 0.16.13 (hardy), and the bug remains (I made sure it was
using the right library using strace). I refer to gnome-terminal in the
rest of the bug, but I get the exact same behavior in xfce4-terminal,
and in the vte test app.

Here's an experiment, done on an idle system (Pentium M 2 Ghz, 1GB RAM),
with gnome-terminal in the foreground, maximized. My font setup is
monospace 12, with subpixel antialiasing. My scrollback is 5000 lines.

$ resize
COLUMNS=191;
LINES=57;
export COLUMNS LINES;
$ date XXX; time (for ((i=0;i1000;++i)); do echo
{a,b}{b,c}{c,a}{d,a}{q,f,e}{z,c,s}; done; echo _all_)
[snip]
_all_

real1m30.833s
user0m0.596s
sys 0m0.012s
$ date
Mon May 12 02:33:08 EDT 2008
$ cat XXX
Mon May 12 02:31:26 EDT 2008

I typed date while it was scrolling, and as soon as it finished, I hit
Enter. As you can see, time lies about the wall time a bit, because
the rendering is so horrendously slow. According to my date
measurement, the wall time is actually 1:42. My reaction time is not
that slow (see konsole experiment below).

Timings of the same experiment (I report the time value because it's
easier): 80x24 -- 1.2s, 80x59 -- 3s, 130x24 -- 1.8s, 191x24 -- 35s,
181x24 -- 2.5s, 186x24 -- 2.5s, 190x24 -- 30s.

But, if I change the string being printed (e.g. by replacing echo ...
with echo $i ...), then 189x24 suddenly becomes slow again (16s).
Maybe it depends on the pattern of spaces/newlines in the text being
displayed?

This manifests itself when I edit wide files, or cat a wide file, and
page through it. In both cases, refreshes can sometimes take as long as
5-7 seconds, even when I'm simply paging through the scrollback with
Shift-PageUp and Shift-PageDown. It seems to depend quite a bit on the
data -- again, I'm surmising something having to do with newlines or
spaces?

In fact, on the various wide data files on my disk, I feel slowness down
to terminal width 120, at which point it abruptly disappears.

I repeated the above experiments a couple of times -- the times are
fairly consistent. It did not seem to matter whether I used gnome-
terminal --geometry, or resized the window after startup.

Now, for the really weird thing. On my screen, 191x24 is almost the full
width of the screen. If I change to 6 point font, and maximize the
window to 383x112, none of these problems occur. The widest files feel
snappy, and messing with newline/space patterns doesn't change that.

Keeping the window maximized, 8pt -- still snappy, 10pt -- slight hint
of slowness, but perfectly usable, 11pt -- noticeable slowness in some
cases, but still under a second per refresh, 12pt -- catastrophically
bad.

Repeating the original 191x57 experiment in konsole (I set it up so that
it renders pixel-identical to the gnome-terminal):

real0m1.799s
user0m0.588s
sys 0m0.020s
$ date
Mon May 12 02:38:35 EDT 2008
$ cat XXX
Mon May 12 02:38:32 EDT 2008

Moreover, none of this slow refresh behavior is reproducible in konsole.
It's not as fast as gnome-terminal at its fastest, but it is very
consistent.

No other applications that display text have these sorts of issues.

So this is sort of a puzzler... I think it would be fascinating to know
the cause. And even better to have it fixed :)

[Bug 216756] Re: Impossible install Gnome starting from ubuntu netboot installation

2008-05-12 Thread Michael B. Trausch
To work around the issue, execute the following commands in a terminal
as your normal user:

$ apt-cache show gnome|grep Depends|cut -f2- -d:|tr ',' '\n'|cut -f2 -d' '|grep
-v gnome-desktop-environment|xargs sudo apt-get install -y
$ apt-cache show gnome-desktop-environment|grep Depends|cut -f2- -d:|tr ','
'\n'|cut -f2 -d' '|grep -v gnome-keyring-manager|xargs sudo apt-get install -y

This will have the same effect as installing the “gnome” metapackage,
however, it will bypass attempting to install the package that is no
longer in the archives (gnome-keyring-manager, which is a dependency of
gnome-desktop-environment) so that the install does not fail.

@Daniel Holbach: Do you know when the fix for this will be uploaded to
Intrepid so that an SRU process can be initiated to take care of this in
the 8.04.1 service release? It's a trivial change, and the starting the
SRU should be easy enough to do, but as I understand it, it's at this
point waiting for an update to Intrepid.

Clarification: 189x24 with the initial printout was fast -- about 2.8s.
Changing the printout to include the line number made it slow.

[Bug 205547] Re: resume produces blank screen when NVIDIA enabled on T61p

2008-05-12 Thread Alexander Konovalenko
Sorry, Max, I don't know much about these bug reports and don't have any
of the relevant hardware to test things either. You can use the
Launchpad search feature to look for similar bugs that have already been
reported. I guess you should file another bug report if the workarounds
described here and in bug #202413 don't help. Your hardware (HP Pavilion
dv6709AX) is not the same as Lenovo Thinkpad T61, so the problem you
experience might be a totally unrelated one.

[Bug 207591] Re: [Hardy] evolution exchange crashes on connect

2008-05-12 Thread Filipp Keks
I figured out the problem!
Evolution crashes when trying to retreive the incorrectly archived items from
public folders.
The reason why it crashed at startup was that the broken public folder was
added to my favorites. It seems to be a new feature of evolution exchange
plugin to display favorite public folders, thats why the bug was hidden
before.

Sorry, but I cant say what is exactly broken in archived folders, When I
try to open in via Outlook it says Unable to open, item is deleted or
moved.

The workaround is to open the account in M$ Outlook and remove favorite
folders.

Hope it helps somebody.

[Bug 229482] [NEW] music vanishes on opening

2008-05-12 Thread Pat Brown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

When I open Rhythmbox over half of my songs vanished right in front of
me. At first the songs count up, and it will display around 200+ songs,
but then almost immediately the count will reverse and I will watch as
the count rapidly goes down to 70+ songs. This happened in both
Rhythmbox and Banshee, which I recently installed. A search of the hard
drive shows the songs are not there. I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and the
system is up to date on all patches. What is going on?

[Bug 229486] [NEW] Keeps crashing randomly since upgrade to Hardy

2008-05-12 Thread Trouilliez vincent
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

I upgraded Gutsy to Hardy (well, I did a clean install actually, keeping only
my /home partition intact), and now Epiphany keeps crashing.
It does so about once a day, and I haven't been able to see a pattern, it seems
really random, I have no clue what triggers the crash.

I was hopping that apport would catch the crash(es) on the fly (isn't
it meant to do just that?), but unfortunately it always fails to detect
that Epiphany crashes, so I don't know how to gather debug information
about the crash. Since it crashes pretty much every day in average, it
should not take long before I can reproduce it.

I am willing to do whetever it takes to debug it, so please just give me
instructions, and I will execute ;-)

[Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login

2008-05-12 Thread ma2412ma
Yes, it's installed by default now. However, please make the mount point
more visible - I suggest not to mount it within the home directory, but
for example in /Volumes. Would that create problems for a multi-user
environment? In Mac OS X, that's exactly the central location where
everything gets mounted.

[Bug 224792] Re: Nautilus pays attention to file extensions??

2008-05-12 Thread Sam Bull
But, that's the point, I shouldn't have to rename it, nautilus should
recognize it as a regular text file, I had none of these problems on
Gutsy, so if it's not a bug, then why does it work on versions before
Hardy? Since when did the xorg.conf file become unrecognizable just
because I added '.old' to it?

[Bug 145607] [NEW] Extraction of compressed folder located on NTFS file system does't work always

2008-05-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When I try to decompress an archive on NTFS file system, I can only
decompress single files. If I try to decompress the entire folder,
nothing happens.

How to reproduce:
1 put a compressed file on a NTFS file system (any format, even .zip or .rar)
2 double click on the archive to open it
3 extract a single file any way you want, it works fine.
4 Extract an entire folder, the status bar says: Extracting archive right
now. Even the CPU reaches the 100% of usage. When the process is over, the
uncompressed folder doesn't appear.
5 The only way to extract a folder on NTFS partition seems to be this: right
click on compressed file and choose extract here. Then put the new folder
wherever you want.

Sometimes (but not always), the extracted folder appears after a reboot.

I use ubuntu feisty fawn with latest updates, Gnome interface 2.18.1 and kernel
2.6.20-16-generic.
Gcc version 4.1.2 (i486-linux-gnu)
Xorg version 7.2.0 (04 April 2007 - standard with feisty fawn) with an
unsupported video card (Sapphire Ati Radeon 9250 AGP 8X). Right now I'm working
with default drivers and I have no problem. Even compiz works fine.
Maybe it could be useful to know that NTFS partition is mounted on the same
hard disk where the swap and ext3 partition are.

Right now I'm a new Linux user, and I don't know what package may cause this
little trouble. I suppose it's file roller, but I'm not sure about it.
This is not a critical bug, so take it easy, there's no need to hurry.

[Bug 76941] Re: [Feisty] Places view is polluted by unwanted/unmounted local hard drive partitions

2008-05-12 Thread Trouilliez vincent
Yep I still have the problem (and some more) on Hardy, see screenshot.

It lists my /boot partition, even though I did not mount it (It's a left
over from when I experimented having a dedicated /boot partition... but
I don't use it anymore, now I just leave /boot on the root partition).

Also, all my local/hard drive partitions now have unhelpful names (they
show up as if they were external/removeable USB devices), whereas in
Gutsy it displayed the mount point from fstab, which was excellent as it
was logical and an easy way to control how partitions are named in
Nautilus.

[Bug 229517] [NEW] file-roller crashes when modifying archive, data destroyed

[Bug 219892] Re: Unable to create shares

2008-05-12 Thread DavidBaucum
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 212098 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/212098

@Webshit: No, I created it under the user created during installation.
As others have noted, this happens the first time you attempt to share a
folder. The solution is to reboot, but the prompts during the first
SAMBA setup should indicated this.

[Bug 229528] [NEW] gnome-system-monitor entire display garbled

2008-05-12 Thread mechgt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

After a recent upgrade (~May 9, 2008), everytime the system monitor is
called up, the entire display is garbled. The system was upgraded to
Hardy, and it worked fine (so it wasn't the Hardy upgrade). Later
updates were applied through synaptic, and I think one was for gnome-
system-monitor. System Monitor was running fine before this update, and
after the screen is completely garbled (see screenshot). I haven't seen
this behaviour with any other applications.

[Bug 229527] [NEW] gnome-panel freezes when I click on clock

2008-05-12 Thread Gergely J.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I commented on an older bug report (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/217221 ),
then I noticed that it's old and invalid, so I opened a new one.

After a recent update of gnome-panel I can no longer click on the clock
and open locations. There is no crash report, it does not crash but
freezes. The whole gnome-panel freezes, I cant click on the window list
eiter. I can do killall gnome-panel from a terminal, it restarts, but
when I left-click again on the clock, it freezes again.

My location (/apps/panel/applets/clock_screen0/prefs/cities) is:
location name=Budapest timezone=Europe/Budapest latitude=47.44
longitude=19.26 code=LHBP current=true/

I attached the /apps/panel/applets/clock_screen0/prefs/cities branch of
my gconf

[Bug 229530] [NEW] Keyring does not automatically unlock after hibernate

2008-05-12 Thread Mathias Florian Menzer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

When restarting the System from Hibernate Mode, the gnome-keyring has to be
unlocked with entering the System Password a second time. When using Wireless
LAN, you have to enter you password once to unlock the System and a second time
to retrieve the WPA/WEP-Key.
The expected behaviour is that the Logon after resuming from Hibernate also
unlocks thhe Keyring automatically as it is done with a normal Logon.

I could reproduce this on two Installation by now, using Hardy and
gnome-keyring Version 2.22.1-1

[Bug 160264] Re: [nvidia] compiz displays white screen when locked

2008-05-12 Thread Chris Coulson
The updated package fixes thw white screen issue on user-switch, but it
doesn't correct it when windows appear on the inactive users desktop.
For example, if I pop a USB drive or a CD in to my computer, Nautilus
opens a window on the desktop of every user logged in. When you switch
back to an inactive users desktop, that window is just a white box (bug
222643)

[Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login

2008-05-12 Thread Ross Peoples
Try opening a file located on a gvfs mount using VLC or some other non-
gnome application, and you'll see why. Even though the applications may
use the Gnome file dialog, the dialog itself sometimes hides connected
shares, depending on the application. VLC is one example of such an
application. They only way to access media on a remote share is to
connect to the share using the mount command.

Another use case for visible, and easy to find mount points: What if I
need to access an something on a remote share via a command line
application? The only way to get to those shares from the terminal is to
find the mount points.

Also, I noticed something interesting...I don't even have a ~/.gvfs
folder, even though I have gvfs-fuse installed and shares connected.

ma2412ma: Though it would be nice to have a /Volumes at the root of the
filesystem, gvfs-fuse is a userspace file system, meaning that once you log
out, those shares are disconnected. There would also be permissions issues,
which is why it's best to have it in the user's home directory.

[Bug 218070] Re: Nautilus not showing the desktop icons wallpaper on login

2008-05-12 Thread AlexE
I encounter the same problem.

A new user on my machine is not affected.

The problem with my account just started a few days after the upgrade (I
was playing with deskop effects and the proprietray ATI drivers as well
with gconf-editor for the panel settings). Before that, it worked fine.
I tried deleting my .nautilus, .gconf, .gconfd, .gnome, .gnome2pivate
and .gnome. Didn't have any effect.

Find my .xsession-errors attatched. Let me know if yo need further
information.

Thank you!
