You have been subscribed to a public bug: Gnome-VFS did not change the modified date meta data field for copied files. Gfvs does, though. As copying files is no modification, this should not happen. [Bug 229465] [NEW] Wide text in wide VTE windows is extremely slow
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: libvte9 This refers to the Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy version of vte (0.16.9). However, I just built vte 0.16.13 (hardy), and the bug remains (I made sure it was using the right library using strace). I refer to gnome-terminal in the rest of the bug, but I get the exact same behavior in xfce4-terminal, and in the vte test app. Here's an experiment, done on an idle system (Pentium M 2 Ghz, 1GB RAM), with gnome-terminal in the foreground, maximized. My font setup is monospace 12, with subpixel antialiasing. My scrollback is 5000 lines. $ resize COLUMNS=191; LINES=57; export COLUMNS LINES; $ date XXX; time (for ((i=0;i1000;++i)); do echo {a,b}{b,c}{c,a}{d,a}{q,f,e}{z,c,s}; done; echo _all_) [snip] _all_ real1m30.833s user0m0.596s sys 0m0.012s $ date Mon May 12 02:33:08 EDT 2008 $ cat XXX Mon May 12 02:31:26 EDT 2008 I typed date while it was scrolling, and as soon as it finished, I hit Enter. As you can see, time lies about the wall time a bit, because the rendering is so horrendously slow. According to my date measurement, the wall time is actually 1:42. My reaction time is not that slow (see konsole experiment below). Timings of the same experiment (I report the time value because it's easier): 80x24 -- 1.2s, 80x59 -- 3s, 130x24 -- 1.8s, 191x24 -- 35s, 181x24 -- 2.5s, 186x24 -- 2.5s, 190x24 -- 30s. But, if I change the string being printed (e.g. by replacing echo ... with echo $i ...), then 189x24 suddenly becomes slow again (16s). Maybe it depends on the pattern of spaces/newlines in the text being displayed? This manifests itself when I edit wide files, or cat a wide file, and page through it. In both cases, refreshes can sometimes take as long as 5-7 seconds, even when I'm simply paging through the scrollback with Shift-PageUp and Shift-PageDown. It seems to depend quite a bit on the data -- again, I'm surmising something having to do with newlines or spaces? In fact, on the various wide data files on my disk, I feel slowness down to terminal width 120, at which point it abruptly disappears. I repeated the above experiments a couple of times -- the times are fairly consistent. It did not seem to matter whether I used gnome- terminal --geometry, or resized the window after startup. Now, for the really weird thing. On my screen, 191x24 is almost the full width of the screen. If I change to 6 point font, and maximize the window to 383x112, none of these problems occur. The widest files feel snappy, and messing with newline/space patterns doesn't change that. Keeping the window maximized, 8pt -- still snappy, 10pt -- slight hint of slowness, but perfectly usable, 11pt -- noticeable slowness in some cases, but still under a second per refresh, 12pt -- catastrophically bad. Repeating the original 191x57 experiment in konsole (I set it up so that it renders pixel-identical to the gnome-terminal): real0m1.799s user0m0.588s sys 0m0.020s $ date Mon May 12 02:38:35 EDT 2008 $ cat XXX Mon May 12 02:38:32 EDT 2008 Moreover, none of this slow refresh behavior is reproducible in konsole. It's not as fast as gnome-terminal at its fastest, but it is very consistent. No other applications that display text have these sorts of issues. So this is sort of a puzzler... I think it would be fascinating to know the cause. And even better to have it fixed :) ** Affects: vte (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Wide text in wide VTE windows is extremely slow https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/229465 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to vte in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 216756] Re: Impossible install Gnome starting from ubuntu netboot installation
To work around the issue, execute the following commands in a terminal as your normal user: $ apt-cache show gnome|grep Depends|cut -f2- -d:|tr ',' '\n'|cut -f2 -d' '|grep -v gnome-desktop-environment|xargs sudo apt-get install -y $ apt-cache show gnome-desktop-environment|grep Depends|cut -f2- -d:|tr ',' '\n'|cut -f2 -d' '|grep -v gnome-keyring-manager|xargs sudo apt-get install -y This will have the same effect as installing the “gnome” metapackage, however, it will bypass attempting to install the package that is no longer in the archives (gnome-keyring-manager, which is a dependency of gnome-desktop-environment) so that the install does not fail. @Daniel Holbach: Do you know when the fix for this will be uploaded to Intrepid so that an SRU process can be initiated to take care of this in the 8.04.1 service release? It's a trivial change, and the starting the SRU should be easy enough to do, but as I understand it, it's at this point waiting for an update to Intrepid. -- Impossible install Gnome starting from ubuntu netboot installation https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/216756 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to meta-gnome2 in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 207591] Re: [Hardy] evolution exchange crashes on connect
I figured out the problem! Evolution crashes when trying to retreive the incorrectly archived items from public folders. The reason why it crashed at startup was that the broken public folder was added to my favorites. It seems to be a new feature of evolution exchange plugin to display favorite public folders, thats why the bug was hidden before. Sorry, but I cant say what is exactly broken in archived folders, When I try to open in via Outlook it says Unable to open, item is deleted or moved. The workaround is to open the account in M$ Outlook and remove favorite folders. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: epiphany-browser I upgraded Gutsy to Hardy (well, I did a clean install actually, keeping only my /home partition intact), and now Epiphany keeps crashing. [Bug 145607] [NEW] Extraction of compressed folder located on NTFS file system does't work always
You have been subscribed to a public bug: When I try to decompress an archive on NTFS file system, I can only decompress single files. If I try to decompress the entire folder, nothing happens. How to reproduce: 1 put a compressed file on a NTFS file system (any format, even .zip or .rar) 2 double click on the archive to open it 3 extract a single file any way you want, it works fine. 4 Extract an entire folder, the status bar says: Extracting archive right now. Even the CPU reaches the 100% of usage. When the process is over, the uncompressed folder doesn't appear. 5 The only way to extract a folder on NTFS partition seems to be this: right click on compressed file and choose extract here. Then put the new folder wherever you want. Sometimes (but not always), the extracted folder appears after a reboot. I use ubuntu feisty fawn with latest updates, Gnome interface 2.18.1 and kernel 2.6.20-16-generic. Gcc version 4.1.2 (i486-linux-gnu) Xorg version 7.2.0 (04 April 2007 - standard with feisty fawn) with an unsupported video card (Sapphire Ati Radeon 9250 AGP 8X). Right now I'm working with default drivers and I have no problem. Even compiz works fine. Maybe it could be useful to know that NTFS partition is mounted on the same hard disk where the swap and ext3 partition are. Yep I still have the problem (and some more) on Hardy, see screenshot. [Bug 212789] Re: gvfs fuse mount is not functional after logout and subsequent login
Try opening a file located on a gvfs mount using VLC or some other non- gnome application, and you'll see why. Even though the applications may use the Gnome file dialog, the dialog itself sometimes hides connected shares, depending on the application. VLC is one example of such an application. They only way to access media on a remote share is to connect to the share using the mount command. Another use case for visible, and easy to find mount points: What if I need to access an something on a remote share via a command line application? The only way to get to those shares from the terminal is to find the mount points. Also, I noticed something interesting...I don't even have a ~/.gvfs folder, even though I have gvfs-fuse installed and shares connected. ma2412ma: Though it would be nice to have a /Volumes at the root of the filesystem, gvfs-fuse is a userspace file system, meaning that once you log out, those shares are disconnected.
