[Bug 234220] [NEW] keybindings do not work properly in 8.04

2008-05-23 Thread Ranjan Sinha
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

I have recently installed 8.04 on my laptop. I login to this machine in two
different ways.
  - Directly logging in and using laptop's keyboard and touchpad.
  - Through another linux machine using X forwarding over SSH so that I use the
keyboard and mouse attached to the second machine. In this case I usually run
this script for creating gnome-session
  ssh -A -T -X -n laptop /etc/X11/Xsession

Using gconf-editor I have created the following key bindings on my laptop under
/apps/metacity/global_keybindings
  run_command_1 CtrlShiftq
  run_command_2 CtrlShiftw
  run_command_3 CtrlShifte

Similarly I have created the corresponding commands
  command_1 gvim
  command_2 firefox
  command_3 gnome-terminal

The funny thing is that when I am directly using the laptop (means its
keyboard) Shiftq launches gvim, shiftw launches firefox and so on i.e. I
don't have to press the Ctrl key at all This is causing lots of problems
as I cannot type Caps by using Shift key alone. I have to use Caps lock key
which is rather annoying. The funny part is that when I am using the laptop
over the SSH connection is described above, the keybindings work as they
should. Ctrl key is indeed needed in that case for triggering the
keybindings.

I can't believe that there is anything wrong with the control key on the
laptop's keyboard since the keys work perfectly fine when I boot it in
windows. May be I have set some settings incorrectly or maybe this is a
bug.

If you need any more information please let me know.

metacity -- 1:2.22.0-0ubuntu4
metacity-common -- 2.22.0-0ubuntu4

[Bug 199088] Re: [Hardy] Message: Suspend Problem. Your computer failed to suspend

2008-05-23 Thread Bernhard Gehl
Additional observation: Last night, I sent my laptop to hibernate and
accidentally switched to console output. For some time, nothing happened
(the system looked quite crashed) but then, a few messages popped up on
my screen which I was able to quickly grab with (*cough*) my cellphone.
Anyways, this is what the system reported before hibernating properly
(there could be errors, since my cellphone-camera is quite crappy and I
had difficulty reading the text from the image. :

MMC: killing requests for dead queue
 backup - CPU0 stuck for 11s! [pm-hibernate:15678]
[fglrx_enable_pat] *ERROR* Pat entry 2 is already configured

On resume this morning, there was a beep sound (as mentioned above) but
the system came up flawless.

[Bug 234160] Re: Copy over sftp stops after one file and closes nautilus

2008-05-23 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

2008-05-23 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

we'll have missed the window in which it makes sense to implement this,
since the upgrade support won't be present when the vast majority of
users are going to be upgrading. I'm therefore marking this bug
'wontfix' with regrets.

[Bug 221144] Re: After upgrading to hardy, gnome-terminal windows are not properly restored on login

2008-05-23 Thread Patric
I did some research regarding the window restore problem and came to the
conclusion that it most likely is a bug in gnome-terminal. You can work
around this by using the old version 2.18 of gnome-terminal from Ubuntu
7.10. Therefore I recommend to assign this bug to the gnome-terminal
developers to verify.

Things to try:

-open an xterm or similar non gnome-terminal terminal application

-start 2 gnome-terminal as background process (gnome-terminal )

-move both windows around the desktop to a different position

-in the xterm call gnome-session-save

-example output of gnome-session-save:
Saving session: gnome-terminal --window-with-profile-internal-id=Default
--show-menubar --role=gnome-terminal-6876--1795818576-1211528538 --active
--geometry 80x24+84+634 --title [EMAIL PROTECTED]: ~ --working-directory
/data2/home/pt --zoom 1 --window-with-profile-internal-id=Default
--show-menubar --role=gnome-terminal-6876--1889095960-1211528539 --active
--geometry 80x24+661+470 --title [EMAIL PROTECTED]: ~ --working-directory
/data2/home/pt --zoom 1

-close both gnome-terminal

-execute the command as specified by gnome-session-save (gnome-terminal
... --zoom 1)

-both gnome-terminal will be restored, but only the last one in the list
will be restored to the right position

-if gnome-terminal is called one by one each one gets restored correctly:
first execute gnome-terminal --window-with-profile-internal-id=Default
--show-menubar --role=gnome-terminal-6876--1795818576-1211528538 --active
--geometry 80x24+84+634 --title [EMAIL PROTECTED]: ~ --working-directory
/data2/home/pt --zoom 1 - first window is restored; then close and execute
gnome-terminal --window-with-profile-internal-id=Default --show-menubar
--role=gnome-terminal-6876--1889095960-1211528539 --active --geometry
80x24+661+470 --title [EMAIL PROTECTED]: ~ --working-directory /data2/home/pt
--zoom 1 - second window is restored

It is also interesting that there is a difference in the content of
.gnome2/session when calling gnome-session-save compared to when using
the gnome session autosave feature! However content of
.metacity/sessions/* is not different.

Also I see that window restore works when using compiz (most poeple do,
as this is the default window manager in hardy?) but not in metacity.
Compiz seems to rearrange the gnome-terminal windows (which do restore
wrong by theirselfs in the first place) whilst metacity doesn't and will
leave the windows in their wrong positions.

[Bug 221144] Re: After upgrading to hardy, gnome-terminal windows are not properly restored on login

2008-05-23 Thread Patric
Replacing the current buggy gnome-terminal can be done as follows (take
care, very evil procedure!):

-download right gnome-terminal 2.18 from
http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/gnome-terminal

-extract package to some temporary path (without actually installing it), e. g.:
dpkg-deb --extract gnome-terminal_2.18.2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
/tmp/gnome-terminal-2.18

-make sure no gnome-terminal processes are running

-as root (need xterm or similar or non GUI console (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F1)):
cp /usr/bin/gnome-terminal /usr/bin/gnome-terminal.orig
cp /tmp/gnome-terminal-2.18/usr/bin/gnome-terminal /usr/bin/gnome-terminal
ln -s /usr/lib/liblaunchpad-integration.so.1

[Bug 225361] Re: Superuser cannot access ~/.gvfs folder when mounted

2008-05-23 Thread Ralph Corderoy
I'd argue that, based on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance, this
bug's Importance should be Medium. As described in the duplicate I
raised, things like automatically checking the success of a daily tar(1)
now fails because it always exits with a non-zero status instead of only
rarely:

For ~/.gvfs to not follow normal Unix semantics is a major pain. As
root, one can normally tar up a user's home directory, perhaps as part
of a daily backup regime, without problems. That's the point of running
it as root. Since the introduction of ~/.gvfs:

$ sudo tar cf /dev/null .gvfs .bash_profile
tar: .gvfs: Cannot stat: Permission denied
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
$ echo $?
2
$

So checking the exit status of tar for any backups problems now fails.
Every day.

I'd argue tar is pretty core and it's having a medium or severe impact,
as outlined under Medium.

Brian,

I'm sorry, but why has the target milestone been removed? Andrea is
referring to GtkEntry widgets needing a hack to fix, but the patches in
the report fixes GtkButton cases, and it is not a hack (in fact, the fix
is to remove an obsolete hack).

Fedora have applied the same fix to GtkButton cases with their own
Nodoka engine, by the way. We should do the same.

[Bug 106910] Re: Unable to mount Data DVD created under Windows XP or Vista that are in UDF format

2008-05-23 Thread Dylan Hunter
Confirmed - still a problem in Hardy, and no, unfortunately, neither the
above gnome-mount thing nor the manual mount work either. When
attempting to manually mount, got the below:

---
mount: block device /dev/scd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/scd0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try

[Bug 234322] [NEW] Lots of processes stay running after logout

2008-05-23 Thread Elias Humbolt
Public bug reported:

Gnome sessions do not shutdown cleanly. Lots of processes stay running
after logout. This might be acceptable on a one user system, but it
brings my LTSP systems down on its knees after some time.

Also processes which don't have anything to do with gnome stay running
and actually run insane consuming most of the CPU and can not be killed
unless with kill -9. Firefox is one candidate for this behaviour, which
of course prevents my users from using it on the next login.

Attached is a ps axu from my LTSP server. The only users who are actually
logged in are lebig, elias and payra. The rest (including those showing an UID
instead of the username) are left over processes.

This makes LTSP a nightmare!

This is from a clean Hardy installation. Please FIX this!
By the way, I have turned off evolution-alarm-notify, trackerd and the tracker
applet for all users by default, as they produce even more open processes.
Evolution is simply a mess!

I can not stress enough of how much importance that is! This affects all
LTSP installations, therefore a whole segment of the Ubuntu audience.

2008-05-23 Thread 8472
today, i've upgraded from GG to HH, with no problem.
after i've logged in to the system, on my desktop, previously there were at
least 2-3 icons pointing to some smb shares on different servers in the network.
now, they are gon.

when i try to recreate them, i'm getting similar errors like other
people are mentioning here.

and this is now month ago after a final release, so please fix this ASAP.
thx

P.S. another problem occured, when i try to open windows share through - Places

[Bug 233889] Re: nautilus cannot handle

2008-05-23 Thread Ben Bailes
I can confirm I have the same problem. Not sure what using gvfs-ls is
exactly, but I can browse folders other than computer, networking, etc.

My USB stick no longer mounts automatically (but definitely works as
tested on other machines) nor does my mp3 player, and oddly i get the
following message when accessing a CD Rom in Nautilus:

mount: block device /dev/scd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: /dev/scd0 already mounted or /media/cdrom0 busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/scd0 is already mounted on /media/cdrom0

yet I can access files as normal. not seen this message before.

Have also noticed that there is now only 1 service type option in
connect to server which is custom location.

All this has occured at some point in the last week so I have reason to
believe it is related.

Please this is a serious issue and the importance is surely high? When
looking around for other people who have the same problem there is a
significant amount who have reported it in the last couple of weeks.

Thanks,
Ben

[Bug 231972] Re: Rhythmbox imports iPod-files altough iPod-plugin is off

2008-05-23 Thread Jim J
I can confirm this bug. I have Rhythmbox's Portable Media Player plugin
disabled. However, whenever I have Rhythmbox running and then attach my
iPod to the computer, Rhythmbox shows that it is attached and shows a
progress bar at the bottom showing that it is importing all the songs
from the iPod.

Also, if I plug in my iPod, Rhythmbox will start up automatically, even
though it is not set in the Preferred Applications control panel (System
- Preferences - Preferred Applications) and then it will show the iPod
attached and start trying to import all the files.

This is very annoying as it didn't used to work this way.

I prefer to use gtkpod to manage my iPod, but I like Rhythmbox as a
media player and podcast client.

I think this type of behavior is going to really turn people off of the
Rhythmbox application if it doesn't get resolved as it doesn't appear to
respect their wishes in regard to it.

[Bug 234335] [NEW] Icon for Gnome Power Manager is wrong in all Themes except in Ubuntu Human

2008-05-23 Thread NetworkerDeluxe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Hi,

i have Ubuntu 8.04 with newest patches.

From one start to another the computer shows a Monitor-Icon for the
Gnome-Power-Manager Icon. This affects only other
Themes like Blubuntu (if've tested some others), but not the original Theme
Ubuntu Human Clearlooks.

I tried to reinstall the Package Gnome-Power-Manager without any result.
So i tried to reinstall Blubuntu, without any result.

What could it be, thanks in advance

Regards

NetDx

[Bug 67129] Re: notification-daemon using 237MB of memory

2008-05-23 Thread Michael Vogt
** Description changed:

  : jm 325...; ps auxww | grep 6276
  jm6276 0.0 1.0 237004 10976 ?SOct14 0:47
/usr/lib/notification-daemon/notification-daemon

yep, 237004 KB. looks like a leak.
The process is still running; let me know if you want maps files, etc.
+
+ TEST CASE:
+ 1. Run in a terminal in hardy:
+ $ notify-send lala ; pmap $(pidof notification-daemon) | grep total
+ $ while true; do notify-send lala; done
+ [wait 60sec]
+ $ pmap $(pidof notification-daemon) | grep total
+ 2. verify that the second total is much higher than the first
+
+ 3. Instal upgraded notification-daemon
+ 4. run killall notification-daemon
+ 5. repeat the steps in 1
+ 6. verify that the number is much smaller

[Bug 226493] Re: Unable to activate plugin Jamendo and Unable to activate plugin Magnatune Store

2008-05-23 Thread Fabian A. Scherschel
I still think this is a valid bug. And a very annoying at that. Bug
#114227 is supposed to be a dupe but doesn't give the original bug. This
is certainly still a problem in Xubuntu Hardy. Please reopen.
