[Bug 257850] [NEW] eog will not open image when file specified

2008-08-14 Thread guardsman85
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

When trying to open an image file with eog (either via CLI or by Open
with... in GUI) the application fails to launch correctly. In either
case, an eog process is started and then goes into sleep status, but no
window is opened. This happens with all image files of various types.

Launched from CLI:
~/Pictures$ eog DSC00334.JPG
[1] 16126
~/Pictures$ ps 16126
  PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND
16126 pts/1Sl 0:00 eog DSC00334.JPG

After launched from GUI:
~/Pictures$ ps ax | grep eog
16342 ?Sl 0:00 eog file:///home/owen/Pictures/DSC00334.JPG
16365 pts/1S+ 0:00 grep eog

Opening eog via CLI with no arguments works fine (used this to generate
bug report). Once the window opens it is possible to load images via
drag-and-drop or via the File -- Open menu.

I tried reinstalling package once. I also attempted gdb as mentioned on
the debugging wiki, but I honestly don't really know how to use it and
did not have any luck.

[Bug 58171] Re: Connection to ICE-unix/.. socket times out so programs take minutes to start

2008-08-14 Thread Tero Karvinen
When this problem is happening:
- OpenOffice does not start
- vim is starts slowly
- It takes 7 seconds to open an xterm window

The socket in /tmp/.ICE-unix/ has a different number than the one
programs are looking for.

I time over 7 s when I start xterm and close the window as soon as it appears:
$ time xterm
Warning: Tried to connect to session manager, Could not open network socket
real0m7.374s
...

Vim starts slowly, strace mentions ICE-unix
$ strace vim newfile.txt
...
nanosleep({1, 0}, {1, 0}) = 0
socket(PF_FILE, SOCK_STREAM, 0) = 3
uname({sys=Linux, node=foobar, ...}) = 0
connect(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path=/tmp/.ICE-unix/6026}, 21) = -1 ENOENT (No
such file or directory)
close(3)

Indeed, this /tmp/.ICE-unix/6026 does not exist. Instead, a similarly named
socket with a different number is found:
$ ls -ld /tmp/.ICE-unix/ /tmp/.ICE-unix/*
drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 4096 2008-08-11 12:33 /tmp/.ICE-unix/
srwxrwxrwx 1 tero tero 0 2008-08-11 12:33 /tmp/.ICE-unix/6943

Don't know if this is related, but localhost and hostname are mapped to
different IP's in the loopback block.
$ cat /etc/hosts
...
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 foobar
...

Running Ubuntu 8.04.1 hardy. IPv6 is not disabled. Currently, DNS
resolution is quite slow, don't know if it is related. I have network-
manager 0.6.6-0ubuntu5, xserver-xorg 1:7.3+10ubuntu10.2, xterm
229-1ubuntu1, vim 1:7.1-138+1ubuntu3.

[Bug 58171] Re: Connection to ICE-unix/.. socket times out so programs take minutes to start

2008-08-14 Thread Tero Karvinen
Problem can be bypassed by creating a symlink.

From strace I can see that programs are looking for socket /tmp/.ICE-
unix/6026. With 'ls', I can see that instead there is a socket /tmp
/.ICE-unix/6943. So I can bypass the problem by creating a symlink:

$ cd /tmp/.ICE-unix/
$ ln -s 6943 6026
$ ls -l
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 tee tee 4 2008-08-14 12:06 6026 - 6943
srwxrwxrwx 1 tee tee 0 2008-08-11 12:33 6943

After that, xterm opens immediately.

$ xterm
Warning: Tried to connect to session manager, Authentication Rejected, reason :
MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 authentication rejected

Vim also opens without delay. However, OpenOffice still does not work.

[Bug 257856] [NEW] SFTP Bookmark in Places menu = Password prompt freezes all panels

2008-08-14 Thread Jakob Unterwurzacher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel
This is on Ubuntu Hardy.

I have several SFTP servers bookmarked in the Places menu.
I use a password manager that sits in the tray on a panel.

Whenever i select a SFTP server from the places menu so that a password prompt
is displayed, *all* gnome panels freeze.
I can't bring up the password manager because it sits in the tray.
I can't switch to the password manager window because the window list is frozen
too (alt-tab is a workaround).

I guess gnome-panel should spawn another process (nautilus?) before
trying to read the password so it doesn't block on stuff like this.

[Bug 221900] Re: After logging in by thinkfinger, I have to give nm-applet access to keyring by typing in password

2008-08-14 Thread Sean Hodges
Support for PAM in gnome-keyring would be VERY desirable. Not just for
thinkfinger, but to support a whole host of authentication methods (USB
dongle authentication, bluetooth authentication by proximity of mobile
phone...)

In my opinion, this should be considered as a high priority enhancement,
because the gnome-keyring program is an integral component of the Gnome
desktop, and widely used.

[Bug 257531] Re: bad file names (truncated) in iso images

2008-08-14 Thread polo974
Because the priority of -R or -J is not specified for isoinfo, it's not
possible to blame it.
Unfortunately, it's -J who wins

It's possible to turn arround that, just with a modification to the
isoinfo.sh file

but if you consider (reasonably) that -R must have priority over -J
the isoinfo.c source could be modified.

I did it in one rapid (and perhaps a bit uggly) way, but it's working
(diff file attached)...

in my last test, i restarted x-window by ctrl+alt+backspace,
gdm login came up,
i choosed gnome as session,
then tried to login as user bvidinli (arrornous user..)
my pass accepted, and desktop started to show,
following three errors occured, i tried to record messages by hand,
and here are approximate translation (errors was originally my locale,
Turkish)

Error1:
Accessibility technologi for this session is required but,
Accessibility record is not found. Please make sure that AT-SPI
package is installed. Your session is started without Accessibility
support.

Error 2:

will restart automatically.

Error 3:
nautilus cannot be used/started because of an unknown/unrecoverable error:
nautilus cannot be used/started now because of a bonobo error while
file manager trying to register/connect/bind to xserver.

After these errors, no desktop appeared, no panel, nothing, only my
wallpaper appeared.

i wirte this mail from working user of bvidinli2.
i attached here Xorg.0.log and .xsession-errors file for user erronous
user/bvidinli. (file in homedir of bvidinli)

i send you these info to help you develop ubuntu better and make it
solid.

i did no install or settings change to cause this failure. i was just
using my computer normal way, with user bvidinli.
suddenly yesterday, when i boot, bvidinli user did not work... i dont
remember that i installed anything or changed it...

now, you should work on to prevent this happen again, and say me the
way to get out of this...

thanks,

hope you success in Ubuntu.

(i also attached /etc/profile which shows error at start of .session-
errors)

[Bug 257774] Re: gdm user switching issue

2008-08-14 Thread Petr Stehlik
Sebastien, this is on onboard Geforce 6150 using proprietary nVidia
driver.

BTW, a workaround for this issue is to try out Alt+Ctrl+F7/8/9/10/.. at
step 5) when there is the normal login prompt on screen and user 'B'
wants to get into his/her session. If the user 'B' has really been
logged in already then his/her console is running somewhere at F7-Fx.
What I am reporting here is that gdm (or who) does not switch to that
console automatically.

IMHO it should work as follows: whenever any user logs out the gdm
should try to locate any other running console. It normally works when
second or subsequently logged in user logs out but it doesn't seem to
work when the user-that-logged-in-_first_ logs out.

Thanks.

[Bug 215245] Re: Yelp crashes when trying to open o help topic

2008-08-14 Thread TobiasK
Hello all,

I am having the same trouble with the Gnome Help center yelp (version
2.22.1) as Victor Osadci. Here is what I did:

1. Open the help application via System - Help and Support

2. Enter the search word 'splash' and hit Enter.
The search results are (among others) the topic 'Update Manager Manual'
(which is linking to -
file:///usr/share/omf/update-manager/update-manager-C.omf#performance-6)

4. Left-Click on the topic 'Update Manager Manual' and wait a few
seconds. The titlebar of yelp displays 'loading ...'

5. Again left-clicking on the topic 'Update Manager Manual'. Yelp
crashes. :(

After the crash I checked my /var/crash/ directory in the command line with ls
-al.
It only brings up the entries . and .. (so the directory is empty).

I tried to report a bug from within yelp with Help - Report a bug which
brought me here to launchpad. I then subscribed to this bug report
(since it fits my issue with yelp). It was displayed that there would be
files attached to the bug report automatically bit there were none.

I am setting the status of this bug report to New (hopefully doing the right
thing).
If you need more information from my computer (running Ubuntu 8.04), please let
me know.

Kind regards, Tobias

The setting middlemouse.contentLoadURL should control what happens when

[Bug 255929] Re: Totem Fails On Multiple Audio and Subtitle Streams

2008-08-14 Thread sojourner
I will confirm this bug , to reproduce load a movie/sample with multiple
audio and or subtitles and start playing it then switch the audio to a
different language , the language that it originaly started with will
continue until you reset the playback to an earlier section of the track
or restart the playback from the begining . on my system switching on
subtitles will show the language of the subtitles but not display the
actual subtitles, switching subtitles during playback is as with the
audio.

all of the ones you have in your computer? can you test the same with
another user? In order to get a backtrace of an already running program
please have a look to

reproduce the bug. Do you have any suggestions? If not, I guess you can
close this and I will resubmit if it comes up.

[Bug 241879] [NEW] Mouse cursor should be hidden before desktop fades to screensaver

2008-08-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

This may not be classified properly as a bug, but it's subjective.

At present, the desktop fades to black, then the screensaver comes on.
But during that fade, the mouse cursor is still visible onscreen --
creating a white distraction as the screen is fading.

It shouldn't be difficult to hide the cursor at the beginning of the
fade, therefore giving the impression that the desktop is very smoothly
transitioning to the screensaver.

I'm not sure if the behaviour is specific to the rss-glx screensaver
package, or if it's more general to GNOME's treatment of screensavers
(gnome-screensaver?)

Ubuntu Release: 8.04
rss-glx: 0.8.1-8ubuntu4 0
gnome-screensaver: 2.22.2-0ubuntu1 0

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfer on USB disk slows down with gvfs

2008-08-14 Thread Dale Clarke
This bug is also affecting Firewire hard drives, I am down to 18.5kb/sec
and can take a very long time. Tried the solution above but alas
nothing.

I am ATI X1550 graphics along with Intel Core duo...

I would class this as critical as it means I can not backup the system
to an external disk which makes Ubuntu unusable for me!

[Bug 152452] [NEW] Wireless signal strength always at 0%

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Since upgrading to Gutsy the network monitor shows 0% signal strength
for wlan0 even if I'm connected to my router and am able to connect to
the internet. The IP data shows correctly, the state of the connection
(sending/receiving, idle etc) and the transferred data amount seems to
be correct. But the bar at the bottom is inactive and in the panel the
bar in the icon is also always in the yellow.
