[Bug 58171] Re: Connection to ICE-unix/.. socket times out so programs take minutes to start
When this problem is happening: - OpenOffice does not start - vim is starts slowly - It takes 7 seconds to open an xterm window The socket in /tmp/.ICE-unix/ has a different number than the one programs are looking for. I time over 7 s when I start xterm and close the window as soon as it appears: $ time xterm Warning: Tried to connect to session manager, Could not open network socket real0m7.374s ... Vim starts slowly, strace mentions ICE-unix $ strace vim newfile.txt ... nanosleep({1, 0}, {1, 0}) = 0 socket(PF_FILE, SOCK_STREAM, 0) = 3 uname({sys=Linux, node=foobar, ...}) = 0 connect(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path=/tmp/.ICE-unix/6026}, 21) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) close(3) Indeed, this /tmp/.ICE-unix/6026 does not exist. Instead, a similarly named socket with a different number is found: $ ls -ld /tmp/.ICE-unix/ /tmp/.ICE-unix/* drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 4096 2008-08-11 12:33 /tmp/.ICE-unix/ srwxrwxrwx 1 tero tero 0 2008-08-11 12:33 /tmp/.ICE-unix/6943 Don't know if this is related, but localhost and hostname are mapped to different IP's in the loopback block. $ cat /etc/hosts ... 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 foobar ... Running Ubuntu 8.04.1 hardy. IPv6 is not disabled. Currently, DNS resolution is quite slow, don't know if it is related. [Bug 58171] Re: Connection to ICE-unix/.. socket times out so programs take minutes to start
Problem can be bypassed by creating a symlink. From strace I can see that programs are looking for socket /tmp/.ICE- unix/6026. With 'ls', I can see that instead there is a socket /tmp /.ICE-unix/6943. So I can bypass the problem by creating a symlink: $ cd /tmp/.ICE-unix/ $ ln -s 6943 6026 $ ls -l total 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 tee tee 4 2008-08-14 12:06 6026 - 6943 srwxrwxrwx 1 tee tee 0 2008-08-11 12:33 6943 After that, xterm opens immediately. $ xterm Warning: Tried to connect to session manager, Authentication Rejected, reason : MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 authentication rejected Vim also opens without delay. However, OpenOffice still does not work. -- Connection to ICE-unix/.. socket times out so programs take minutes to start https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/58171 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-session in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 257856] [NEW] SFTP Bookmark in Places menu = Password prompt freezes all panels
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel This is on Ubuntu Hardy. I have several SFTP servers bookmarked in the Places menu. I use a password manager that sits in the tray on a panel. Whenever i select a SFTP server from the places menu so that a password prompt is displayed, *all* gnome panels freeze. I can't bring up the password manager because it sits in the tray. I can't switch to the password manager window because the window list is frozen too (alt-tab is a workaround). I guess gnome-panel should spawn another process (nautilus?) before trying to read the password so it doesn't block on stuff like this. ** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: Binary package hint: gnome-panel + This is on Ubuntu Hardy. [Bug 221900] Re: After logging in by thinkfinger, I have to give nm-applet access to keyring by typing in password
Support for PAM in gnome-keyring would be VERY desirable. Not just for thinkfinger, but to support a whole host of authentication methods (USB dongle authentication, bluetooth authentication by proximity of mobile phone...) In my opinion, this should be considered as a high priority enhancement, because the gnome-keyring program is an integral component of the Gnome desktop, and widely used. -- After logging in by thinkfinger, I have to give nm-applet access to keyring by typing in password https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/221900 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 257531] Re: bad file names (truncated) in iso images
Because the priority of -R or -J is not specified for isoinfo, it's not possible to blame it. Unfortunately, it's -J who wins It's possible to turn arround that, just with a modification to the isoinfo.sh file but if you consider (reasonably) that -R must have priority over -J the isoinfo.c source could be modified. After these errors, no desktop appeared, no panel, nothing, only my wallpaper appeared. i wirte this mail from working user of bvidinli2. i attached here Xorg.0.log and .xsession-errors file for user erronous user/bvidinli. [Bug 257774] Re: gdm user switching issue
Sebastien, this is on onboard Geforce 6150 using proprietary nVidia driver. BTW, a workaround for this issue is to try out Alt+Ctrl+F7/8/9/10/.. at step 5) when there is the normal login prompt on screen and user 'B' wants to get into his/her session. If the user 'B' has really been logged in already then his/her console is running somewhere at F7-Fx. What I am reporting here is that gdm (or who) does not switch to that console automatically. IMHO it should work as follows: whenever any user logs out the gdm should try to locate any other running console. It normally works when second or subsequently logged in user logs out but it doesn't seem to work when the user-that-logged-in-_first_ logs out. [Bug 215245] Re: Yelp crashes when trying to open o help topic
Hello all, I am having the same trouble with the Gnome Help center yelp (version 2.22.1) as Victor Osadci. Here is what I did: 1. Open the help application via System - Help and Support 2. Enter the search word 'splash' and hit Enter. The search results are (among others) the topic 'Update Manager Manual' (which is linking to - file:///usr/share/omf/update-manager/update-manager-C.omf#performance-6) 4. Left-Click on the topic 'Update Manager Manual' and wait a few seconds. The titlebar of yelp displays 'loading ...' 5. Again left-clicking on the topic 'Update Manager Manual'. Yelp crashes. :( After the crash I checked my /var/crash/ directory in the command line with ls -al. It only brings up the entries . and .. (so the directory is empty). I tried to report a bug from within yelp with Help - Report a bug which brought me here to launchpad. I then subscribed to this bug report (since it fits my issue with yelp). It was displayed that there would be files attached to the bug report automatically bit there were none. I am setting the status of this bug report to New (hopefully doing the right thing). If you need more information from my computer (running Ubuntu 8.04), please let me know. [Bug 241879] [NEW] Mouse cursor should be hidden before desktop fades to screensaver
You have been subscribed to a public bug: This may not be classified properly as a bug, but it's subjective. At present, the desktop fades to black, then the screensaver comes on. But during that fade, the mouse cursor is still visible onscreen -- creating a white distraction as the screen is fading. It shouldn't be difficult to hide the cursor at the beginning of the fade, therefore giving the impression that the desktop is very smoothly transitioning to the screensaver. I'm not sure if the behaviour is specific to the rss-glx screensaver package, or if it's more general to GNOME's treatment of screensavers (gnome-screensaver?)
