[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2008-08-16 Thread FAJALOU
Confirmed on Ubuntu 8.04.1 I have not tried the patch fix, primarily
because i am not competent with compiling source, and I do not have
proposed enabled because of a bad kernel in proposed. I can see all of
the computers in the Workgroup, but I have to manually type in the path
to the folder to see it. Willing to add any necessary files or pastes
to help fix the problem.

[Bug 223424] [NEW] Samba Local Area Network File Transfewr BUG

2008-08-16 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

In the new hardy version the Samba Network Manger will not send my files
to my windows XP computer that is on the TCP/IP network with the
copy/cut paste command.

I found that I can send files to my windows XP computer by draging and
droping them to the windows xp share folder that now gets mounted to the
desktop in the new hardy version when accessing a network share.

To me this is very serious bug that keep people from accessing there
data.

My Windows XP Machine is Pre Service Pack 1 with no Firewall or antvirus
nothing its just a backup file server that does nothing more that hold
files with a no software or updates installed on it just Windows XP Home
raw nothing more.

[Bug 258499] [NEW] fails to open/extract .deb files in intrepid

2008-08-16 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

In current intrepid alpha 4 release, When right-clicking on a .deb files
and click on Extract here, or open with Archive Manager, file roller
just show a error message saying :

Could not open deb
Archive type not supported.

This is particular because .deb files are normally .ar archives (I can
extract a .deb with ar -xv *.deb) and file-roller is able both to create
and read ar archives, so the problem might not be so hard to fix.

Often when I close a tab in epiphany-browser the whole browser crashes. I can
then restore the session after the crash. I think this only happens on closing
non-empty tabs. (See also bug #104260 and bug #224145).

[Bug 258178] Re: Ubuntu doesn't save power on it's own

2008-08-16 Thread Uwe L. Korn
For example, the increase of VM writeback time which is always suggested
as first when I use powertop increases performance, too, but if your
system crashes there might be a loss of the data of the last 15 seconds
instead of the last 5 seconds, so

I don't care about performance anyway.
That's just for you and some others and not all, so I your proposed option
would be nice, maybe a some additional options should be added to

[Bug 258104] Re: [PATCH] gtk apps cannot use remote ipp:// printers

2008-08-16 Thread Nathaniel Smith
Have now verified that the attached patch builds cleanly against
gtk+2.0_2.12.9-3ubuntu4 from hardy, and with the resulting library
installed, GTK+ apps print correctly. I tested both local and remote
printers; remote printers now work when they did not before, while local
printers continue to work exactly as they did before.

The redhat bug report linked above lists another confirmation, and the
same patch seems to have shipped to fc9. (I say seems because fedora
is having some infrastructure problems right now.)

The bug is already fixed in intrepid, since it has the latest gtk+ pre-
release (2.13.6, released August 6, while the bug was fixed upstream in
June).

Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.

with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 251105] Re: `tput init' works inconsistently in gnome-terminal, but not xterm, etc.

2008-08-16 Thread Ralph Corderoy
Hi Pedro, Thanks, I found
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses#Needing+testing+in+the+development+release
and followed the instructions there.

Under qemu using Intredpid Alpha 3 with gnome-terminal 2.23.4.2-0ubunut2
and libvte9 1:0.16.14-1ubuntu1, I can re-produce the bug. The attached
screenshot has three red Ys in the first `tput init' output and two in
the second, none in the third. This is a lower frequency than with 8.04
but I suspect this is just a side effect of using qemu as I think the
bug is a timing issue in VTE's handling of escape sequences. With qemu,
a whole load of XYs would draw on the screen at once. Natively, I can
see them appearing one by one.

Re: [Bug 217167] Re: gnome-terminal is Always 80x24. No global or per-profile setting available.

2008-08-16 Thread Ralph Corderoy

Hi Sam, thanks for the pointers. The first isn't suitable because it's
editing a file that isn't intended to be edited by the user and also
changes the size for all users on the machine, not just me! :-) The
second shows others are having the same issue but there's no solution to
have per-profile default sizes.

I think the fact that the `ESC [ 8' escape sequence doesn't work in
gnome-terminal despite vte's resize_window() code also suggests this is
a valid bug.

The application epiphany-gecko was killed unexpectedly. You computer

I would say a bug tool which requires a minimum RAM is quite unusable

[Bug 257519] Re: File Roller With P7zip Broken on Rars

2008-08-16 Thread nullack
We should not be so quick to get rid of bugs without having
consideration to a quality user experience. The gnome feature list
states that File-roller (Archive Manager) now uses p7zip to extract
archives, so it supports .alz, .zip, .cbr, .cbz archives, .arj, .rar and
.iso files. People naturally expect that stated features will actually
be included and that they will work without hassles.

If the root cause of the bug is that the package p7zip-rar is not
present, then the solution should be that this package is changed to
require p7zip-rar. What happens now is that rar's under file manager
fail mysteriously without any assistance about needing the p7zip-rar
package.

Im re-opening this to confirmed because its not an invalid bug report.

Session is started in the default way: I have hardy amd64 installed from

I tried logging out and restarting X with alt-ctrl-backspace, but it did
not fix the problem. I just installed this machine, so I don't know if
it happens a lot.

I have not yet developed a guaranteed way to trigger this problem or a
guaranteed way to get rid of it. Earlier commenters say it happens

What happens is, a moment (sometimes as long as a second) after I
check/uncheck something on this list, it reverts itself. This for
instance means I have to manually run gksu /usr/sbin/gdmsetup should I
want to enable remote logins, or other such tweaks.

Screenshot of the dialog in question is attached. I do not know what
package this would be considered, but I don't think this is the fault of
the menu editor itself, rather something wrong with the files it is
attempting to alter.

[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'

2008-08-16 Thread BlueWine
Would like to say I'm also having this problem. It happens rather
regularly too. This time Pidgin is affected, it's uninterruptible and is
hovering around the 70% CPU range, sometimes climbing to 100%. All the
files it seems to have open are *.wav files, so that may point to it
being PulseAudio?

Seems to happen to a random program (usually the one opened last) which
is trying to play sound - Firefox 3 and Pidgin have been affected so
far. Weirdly, however, I have killed PulseAudio, restarted RhythmBox and
it's still playing! Even though it hasn't restarted PulseAudio, so maybe
I'm not killing the right thing (or maybe RhythmBox doesn't use
PulseAudio, which might therefore point to another culprit not releasing
the sound device? Stabs in the dark..)

It presents itself by making my system sluggish, but not unusable, so
I'll leave it on with the program in the background for a little while,
see if it relents.

If you need more details or for me to test anything, please let me know.
It happens rather regularly to me so I'm sure I can get a result of an
experiment quite quickly ^_~

[Bug 230089] Re: totem-xine progress thumb stuck at end after seeking to end of file

2008-08-16 Thread Mike Crowe
I can reproduce the same problem in totem-gstreamer (although I ran the
gauntlet of bug #527572 when trying to do so) although it might not be
quite as easy. I used an MP3 file that was over half an hour long.

I also managed to get totem-gstreamer to hang (and stop repainting) just
after seeking to the end. When attaching to it with gdb the backtrace
looked somewhat recursive:

[Bug 250021] Re: copy as root trashes my install

2008-08-16 Thread sojourner
I agree whole heartedly with Nullack , a bug brought on by a simple
common action that locks you out of your system deserves a higher
priority than low . further the repermissioning of / is bizzare
enough that even an experienced user might not find it for awhile and if
they did not have the foresight to set a real root password rather than
sudo ( which don't work when the bug occurs) his install would be toast
.

[Bug 257519] Re: File Roller With P7zip Broken on Rars

2008-08-16 Thread nullack
I appreciate that the RARLABS software is closed source, but RARLABS
provides the software as a way for users on non windows environments to
extract their format. Ubuntu includes other closed source software in
the repos such as the Nvidia drivers. Another example is Adobe Flash.

The so called free unrar library (the RARLABS unrar is also free as
in cost) that is optionally available in the repos as well is feature
limited and not reliable for general use cases in my experience. An
example is how it fails to extract multiple volume archives when I tried
it.

The idea that the required package cannot be included as required for
file roller is one which is at odds to other Ubuntu closed source
precedents.

[Bug 257519] Re: File Roller With P7zip Broken on Rars

2008-08-16 Thread Sebastien Bacher
the pzip-rar package is available in ubuntu but it's non-free and can't
be shipped on the CD or installed by default, the adobe flash plugin is
not available in the default installation either. the drivers are a
different topic since they are something required for some user to have
working hardware, non-free drivers are not enable by default either
though

[Bug 257519] Re: File Roller With P7zip Broken on Rars

2008-08-16 Thread nullack
In such a case with Canonical seeing non free hardware drivers as being
higher than non free software I suggest the best move forward for the
users is to close this bug and wait on the enhancement request you
mention to overcome the issue with novice users having a mysterious
failure with RAR archive extraction by default. I don't know the number
of the enhancement and I would appreciate it so I can track help with
testing.

[Bug 208181] Re: Optional Information Needed to Connect to Samba Share

2008-08-16 Thread Pajari Räsänen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 216104 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/216104

In my case it was not a bug after all, it seems. I installed Guarddog
(having used it earlier but, for some reason, having also uninstalled
it) and fixed the problem by changing the firewall settings. So the
bug was due to restrictive iptables settings, as it seems.

Sorry for the unnecessary post.

2008-08-16 Thread meshugga
i just had an evolution with 100% cpu usage on my thinkpad t61 with
hardy.

strace -p showed a restart_syscall and a ps waux showed ~10 email to
evolution windows with an email address i clicked on several times in
firefox, but no evolution window actually opened.
