[Bug 262910] [NEW] GDM asks for password twice during login

2008-08-30 Thread Brian Croom
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Running the latest Intrepid packages (gdm=2.20.7-0ubuntu4, GDM always
displays the password prompt twice after I enter a username. The
progression is: username-password-password-logged in. The string
entered for the first password prompt seems to be ignored altogether. I
can input my actual password, a different string, or a null string with
no effect; the second password prompt behaves as expected.

- This behavior is the same regardless of the current GDM theme
- Logging into virtual terminals works as expected

** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

I didn't try it yet, i'm investigating how to recompile the Ubuntu kernel with

currently only be done through gconf or using 3th party applications.

This idea has been originally suggested on Ubuntu Brainstorm

[Bug 231051] Re: yelp crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-08-30 Thread Sur Demir
This issue still lingers. It's so trivial, hence I don't understand why I'm
asked for apport logs, valgrind stuff, etc
In one gnome-terminal tab I type
$ yelp info:sed
In another gnome-terminal tab I type
$ yelp info:libc
this second yelp window remains blank with busy cursor during which the CPU
usage tops, then both yelp instances crash.

This is a fairly standard Ubuntu 8.04.1 desktop, no third party stuff,
so how is this just an issue for me? Is this not repeatable for you?

Same problem.
Just surfing using Firefox, not doing anything else.

Since I don't know what caused it/how to reproduce it it seems kind of
difficult to make a decent Valgrind log.
Would it be usefull to just start the Valgrind log and wait/hope it crashes?

[Bug 218998] Re: gedit snippets plugin does not save edited default snippets

In case anyone wants to backport the bugfix to Hardy: the patch can be
seen at

(it was pointed to by the upstream developer, and indeed fixes the
problem).

[Bug 263012] [NEW] Opening a folder link should show the path to the folder

2008-08-30 Thread young
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I was creating some links on my desktop for frequently accessed folders,
eg /media/storage/images. When I click on my link to open this folder in
the address bar I get /home/myname/desktop/mylink. I think this
behaviour is counter-intuitive and can cause problems for users unaware
of this. For example, if I set an image from this folder (link) as a
desktop background and later decide to remove this link, my desktop
background will be gone, because the path is invalid.

I'm using a clean install of Intrepid, and these issues are non-
existent! Even during the expected hiccups of lag, the system remains
responsive to user input. And certainly, the case of my computer
being lagged down during the whole burning process is gone.

Cheers

[Bug 262861] Re: evolution crushes on exchange password change

2008-08-30 Thread WebSage
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: evolution

My Domain and Exchange password changed. I try to change the Exchange
password in Evolution. As I go to Edit/Preferences and select Exchange
account Edit and go to Exchange Settings tab and click on Change
  Password button - Evolution crushes.

Any ideas? Any way I can ger Evolution to forget my password and prompt
  me for it again?

  - thanks!

  ProblemType: Bug
  Architecture: i386
  Date: Fri Aug 29 18:12:34 2008
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.04
  ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/evolution
  NonfreeKernelModules: ath_hal
  Package: evolution 2.22.3.1-0ubuntu1
  PackageArchitecture: i386
  ProcEnviron:
   PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games
   LANG=en_US.UTF-8
   SHELL=/bin/bash
  SourcePackage: evolution
  Uname: Linux 2.6.24-19-generic i686

Found a work around: I disabled this account, quit and enabled it. That
forced Evolution to prompt me for the new password.

This should still be a bug.
+
+ Apologies for incomplete description -- when I say crush, I mean that
+ Evolution disappears immediately as soon as I click on Change
+ Password button. No other applications are affected. When I start
+ Evolution again, it starts normally.
+
+ I just tried it again and this time I got the Change Password dialog.
+ The only thing that changed is that before Exchange account was not
+ accessible -- the password was wrong. Now that the password is on the
+ client and server are in sync - dialog works.
+
+ I have three accounts setup - all IMAP: one Exchange and two gmail.
+
+ Not sure where the Evolution logs are kept or I would have checked that.
+
+ - thanks.

[Bug 263026] [NEW] Intrepid regression: opening archive on remote directory fails with Operation not supported

2008-08-30 Thread Oliver Gerlich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

When trying to open an archive file that is located on a remote location
(like a Samba share, or through SFTP+gvfs) file-roller gives the error
message Operation not supported. When started from command line, it
prints WARNING **: Failed to delete the local copy: Operation not
supported. The file is not opened then.

This happens in all cases (opening from Nautilus, manually running file-
roller smb://... from command line, or running file-roller and using
File-Open). The archive file itself is ok and reachable (I can copy it
to the local disk with Nautilus and open it from there).

I think this is a regression, because in Hardy file-roller can access
remote files just fine.

This was tested on Intrepid (alpha4 plus all updates), with file-roller
2.23.6-0ubuntu1 and gvfs 0.99.5-0ubuntu1.

[Bug 262997] Re: gedit cursor change position during writing

2008-08-30 Thread Andreas Moog
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

* Does that happen only in gedit or with other wordprocessors, too?

Another thing, I had a similar problem once when using a laptop with a
touchpad. Everytime I accidently came in touch with it, the cursor would
jump to another position. Could that be a reason for you, too?

And it start to annoys, a big time.

I don't use Evolution, author of alarm-clock corrected his .glade file
to circumvent this bug, but now I see the same problem in Gaupol

spin button.

Would be nice to patch it also in Intrepid (as it is in Hardy) before
official release of 810 :-)

[Bug 262910] Re: GDM asks for password twice during login

2008-08-30 Thread Brian Croom
I have been running Intrepid since Alpha 1 and keep the system up to
date. This first started occurring several weeks ago, I neglected to
report it then, assuming it was a wider-spread issue and would be
quickly resolved. Unfortunately that means that I have no leads on what
specific update caused the problem.

I'm not aware of having made any config changes, and I just tried
reinstalling a number of packages to try to restore default configs, but
there was no change.

Any ideas for further debugging?

[Bug 263012] Re: Opening a folder link should show the path to the folder

2008-08-30 Thread Chris Coulson
I think you are confusing symbolic links with 'links' in Windows. The
two concepts are very different.

Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbolic_link for a brief
explanation of symbolic links in Linux. Symbolic links are meant to
operate completely transparently to the applications that are using
them, and are a feature of POSIX operating systems. A lot of things rely
on the functionality provided by symbolic links, and you couldn't just
change the behaviour of them.

If you want an icon on your desktop that behaves like a Windows
shortcut, then you need to right click and create a new launcher as
opposed to creating a symbolic link. If you wanted a launcher to point
to /home/foo/bar, then the command required in the launcher would be:

nautilus --no-desktop /home/foo/bar

I'm closing this bug report as it doesn't really describe a bug. Thank
you and feel free to report any other bugs you find.

[Bug 219648] Re: Laptop battery runtime reduced in Hardy compared to Gutsy

2008-08-30 Thread Uphaar Agrawalla
Leann: Yes, the issue is still present in Hardy. Why has this been
marked Incomplete? If you need any information please let me know and
I'll try my best to get it for you. I'm changing the status to Confirmed
as several people have confirmed this issue.

Regarding the 2.6.27 kernel, as I mentioned in another bug report I am
willing to test it if it is available for Hardy and not dangerous to
use. It is not possible to upgrade to Intrepid Alpha as this is my only
laptop.

[Bug 263073] [NEW] copy doesn't work correctly

2008-08-30 Thread keito
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy

when copying a folder of a certain size (for this example I'll use 10gb)
to another drive that only has 2gb free on it I get an error -

Error while copying to /path/to/location

There is not enough space on the destination. Try to remove files to
make space.

show more details
There is 2.0 GB available, but 10.0 GB is required

HERE IS THE PROBLEM THOUGH...

there is already an exact copy of the folder I'm trying to copy across,
all I want to do is overwrite/update the folders/files, so in reality
there may only be 2gb free on the drive I'm attempting to copy to, but
with the overwriting I won't go over that amount as the updated files
will only increase the size used by approx 200mb.

I feel this is something that needs to be addressed.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

To reproduce this, create two archives from any file, one .zip and one

[Bug 249039] Re: GDM error on shutdown/restart

2008-08-30 Thread Joe Vender
This may or may not be of any help, but I offer it just in case. I just
did a clean install of Ubuntu 8.04.1 and then put a hold on the package
gdm before doing a full-upgrade. Everything was upgraded to the latest
packages as of today, Aug. 30, 2008, except gdm which was held at the
version shipped with 8.04.1

After the upgrade, Ubuntu started displaying the error message described
at the top of this thread during system reboot. So, this evidently isn't
being caused by upgrading the gdm package, but by some other package
upgrade.

[Bug 263085] [NEW] on boot with Hardy 8.04 'gvfsd-trash' eats CPU and causes high disk access

2008-08-30 Thread chappejw
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

1) Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

2) gvfs:
  Installed: 0.2.5-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 0.2.5-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 0.2.5-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com hardy-updates/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 0.2.3-0ubuntu4 0
500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages

3) I expect gvfs to not use excessive system resources.

4) On boot with Hardy Heron 8.04 'gvfsd-trash' eats my CPU to nearly 100% and
puts the system at a near full capacity load. It seems to be the culprit as
well with causing high disk access of the hard drive. After about 3 or 4
minutes of whatever 'gvfsd-trash' was doing it seems to finish and my system
becomes usable again... For 3 or 4 minutes after boot though my hard drive
light is constant and the system becomes so bogged down I cannot use it. Here
is output from top within 2 seconds of being able to open a terminal window
after boot.

[Bug 260939] Re: Window list missing items on second monitor

2008-08-30 Thread myxiplx
Got another comment to add to this after spotting something today. If I
swap to a different workspace, all of my windows then appear on the
window list on the primary monitor (and disappear from the new list on
the second monitor).

So items on the second monitor only disappear from the window list if
I'm currently viewing the workspace they're on...
