[Bug 303637] [NEW] Ability to kill gnome-screensaver makes it easy to defeat the lock screen dialog

2008-11-30 Thread Thomas O.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

By going to any of the ttys it is possible to terminate gnome-
screensaver and gain access to the machine. Although ttys themselves are
protected with passwords, these can be left unlocked accidentally, and
running killall gnome-screensaver we can get rid of the dialog and
gain full access to the computer.

What I suggest is:
 A) Protect ttys after locking; also lock them with a password, or;
 B) Protect the process so that it requires sudo privileges to kill, like
mysql/apache, or;
 C) Make sure some parent process which can't be terminated can pop up the
gnome-screensaver when it is killed. Said process cannot be terminated, like
suggestion A.

I am typing this on my laptop which I just defeated using the
aforementioned technique.

[Bug 230163] Re: gnome-sudoku should be removed from ubuntu repos

2008-11-30 Thread Hew McLachlan
gnome-sudoku does not exist in the latest releases of Ubuntu. The only
reference to gnome-sudoku is that gnome-games provides gnome-sudoku.
There is no package called gnome-sudoku. Please check the Ubuntu
repositories to see that this is the case.

The issue only seems to be occuring on KDE systems, which suggests it is
caused by a missing dependency that is otherwise included on GNOME
systems. This is why I've asked if someone experiencing the problem can
check if python-glade2 is installed, and if installing it fixes the
problem.

I have changed the sourcepackage back to gnome-games as I have
previously checked this with Sebastien Bacher. Hopefully the confusion
in this bug will be resolved once someone answers my previous questions.

** Changed in: gnome-games (Ubuntu)

[Bug 303641] [NEW] Integrate deskbar in the gnome menubar

2008-11-30 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: deskbar-applet

I just read this comment on ubuntuforums:

I love how in Vista I can press the Start key and instantly type in
stuff to find such as files or apps. Is it possible to do the same
actions in ubuntu? I know there are search features and some program
called Beagle seems pretty popular, but is it possible to get that same
action on ubuntu? (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=997650)

So I thought, why not? Would it be possible to include deskbar on the
gnome menubar, so that you can start searching just by clicking the apps
menu or press F1?

I made a mockup to see what it would look like. Opinions please.

[Bug 111893] Re: Panel items lose their order when panel is not expanded

2008-11-30 Thread Aaron Roydhouse
I also see this problem with Ubuntu 8.10 intrepid (amd64), gnome-panel
2.24.1. I've tried locking and unlocking every way I can think of but
still the placement and order shifts around.

For me is it is particularly the notification area applet (2.24.1) that
shifts around. Most other things seems to stay in place. Perhaps it is
problematic as it is the only element that changes size?

I notice it strikes in particular when the screen size changes - which
makes sense I guess. It seems there is no sense of 'right-aligned' and
no space-filling elements you can insert.

Aaron.

[Bug 303637] Re: Ability to kill gnome-screensaver makes it easy to defeat the lock screen dialog

2008-11-30 Thread bugmenot
I think he means that if you are logged in on a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1 e.g.) you
can change to that console although the system actually must be locked and if
you have rights on the account which is logged in in this console you can do
everything (also killing the screen saver).
I tested it and it was possible to login and kill the screen saver.
If you lock screen in gnome you should be logged out on the terminals or the
terminals should be locked, too.

[Bug 303674] [NEW] rhythmbox last.fm plugin does not include personal radio

The Rhythmbox last.fm plugin does not show my Personal Radio feed by
default and only shows the Neighbour Radio. It looks like a fix should
have already found its way into Intrepid from upstream back in July but
the Personal Radio is still not showing up, at least for me in Intrepid

Couldn't this be simply done with piping? Unless I'm not understanding, you

The objective is to have the output in a new terminal, not the one you
are using; hence why gnome-terminal is part of the command in the
first place.

[Bug 303677] [NEW] Webcam picture upside down

2008-11-30 Thread jtakalai
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ekiga

My laptop: packard bell EASYNOTE BG46-U-013D
My webcam (attached to it): no brand given, just USB 2.0 1.3M UVC WebCam;
apparently quite generic
My graphics chipset: Mobile Intel GMA X3100 Graphics, Integrated in Mobile G965
Express chipset

1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
* open Ekiga, do the first-time wizard, click on the video view

2. the behavior you expected, and
* video feed (and there it was, unlike on the last ubuntu :)

3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
* video feed is upside down

Apropos: I hear there're differences in how DirectX and OpenGL return
bitmaps (DirectX returns them upside down). This machine is Vista-
ready or whatever it was, so maybe that's why?

Suggestion for fix: Add advanced options to the preferences: [picture
orientation]: [no change, mirror-x, mirror-y, rotate right, rotate left,
rotate around, mirror-rotate right, mirror-rotate left] and implement
the transformations

[Bug 303684] [NEW] `ctrl key position' not restored

2008-11-30 Thread mokabar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

i am using a usb keyboard with my computer, where i am mapping the
capslock to control via the gnome keyboard preferences, by setting the
`ctrl key position' entry to `make capslock an additional ctrl'.

this works fine until i unplug the keyboard and plug it in again. the
keyboard works fine again, but the caps mapping has been lost. in order
to restore the intended behavior, i need to select `ctrl key position'
`default' and switch back to `make capslock an additional ctrl'.

it would be nicer, if this mapping is restored automatically, when
plugging in the keyboard.

[Bug 36189] Re: Applets do not scale well with changing resolution

2008-11-30 Thread Linuturk
I have a similar attachment as shown in the attached screenshot.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=996553

Basically, I've increased the resolution via the Preferences menu
applet, and my top and bottom panes weren't scaling across the screen.
I've somehow managed to get the bottom panel working correctly, but
trying to reproduce that result with the top panel isn't working.

I've also noticed that the Lock Screen password box isn't centered on
the screen. It is centered on the old resolution.

Same goes for any Administrative Tasks box that comes up. The entire
screen doesn't gray out, just the old resolution.

My login window is also the old resolution as well.

[Bug 75324] Re: Gnome file chooser/selector is way to small

2008-11-30 Thread Milan
Could you tell us what applications you're seeing this bug with? I've
been investigating this, but I've not been able to reproduce it.

Harrison: you say it's unpredictable. How often do you see it? Could you
try to find some determinations to it (applications, folders...)?

hackel: do you get this everytime and with every application?

traxxas: from a recent change in the code, the window is resized *after*
being shown, thus it's not centered. The cause of that is easy to
detect, I'm trying to see what we can do. But the link with the bug is
not clear to me.

Could you all give more precise information? What window manager are you
using (please try Compiz and Metacity), what applications, how often...
? Thanks!

[Bug 296451] Re: gnome-power-manager needs several minutes to load at startup

2008-11-30 Thread Andrej Zirko
I've got similiar problems with gnome-power-manager. The whole responsiveness
of gnome-power-manager seems to be slow - it takes about a minute till ubuntu
recognized that the AC was plugged in. Also when I want to shut down computer I
get a dialog about gnome-power-manager not responding. There is a discussion
about this bug at ubuntuforums

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 32bit (fully updated) on HP 6720s...

[Bug 303699] [NEW] Nautilus Weird Behavior [File Viewer]

2008-11-30 Thread RoDoLFo TX
Public bug reported:

1) Open up a nautilus window and browse some folder that has too many files and
you need to use the scroll bar to view those files.
2) Open a new tab from the same directory you just did the first step. Select
this tab.
The scroll bar won't be there, unless you resize and maximize the window again.
But the scroll bar will be in one bar, once you switch to the other one, it
won't be there anymore.

[Bug 230163] Re: gnome-games should depend on python-glade2

2008-11-30 Thread ronny
I'm not running Kubuntu, and don't have a Kubuntu image here to install so
 I'm not able to test.
That's easy to fix:
$ wget
http://ubuntu.media.mit.edu/ubuntu-releases/kubuntu/intrepid/kubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso
$ sudo apt-get install qemu
$ qemu -cdrom kubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso
... or use virtualbox-ose if you like this better...

it would really help if you could install python-glade2 and report on whether
the problem still occurs for you.
Installing python-glade2 fixes the problem.

PS: I am not using anything of this. I just run into this bug when I was
giving Kubuntu a test run. Therefore my time and effort when testing and
verifying the bug (or the repair) is as high as yours.

[Bug 303694] Re: totem not able to play online streams

2008-11-30 Thread Magnus S
The link
mmsh://ctfotbal.visual.cz/ct/fotbalvize/plzen_olomouc2008.wmv?MSWMExt=.asf will
fail in vlc and mplayer as well.
The verbose output from vlc shows that the connection is successful but it
doesn't seem to understand what type of stream it is. It seems confused.

Also, i'm not sure about the MSWMExt part of the url, is it something
standardized when streaming media, or is it just another server variable
that adds the .asf extension?

@ stereoit: where did you get the link from? Is there a playlist file
available?

[Bug 303470] Re: Recording no longer works in Intrepid for Asus A8Jm (ICH7 snd_hda_intel)

2008-11-30 Thread jtakalai
I experience something similar, but playing music from Rhythmbox and
recording via gnome-sound-recorder also produces only quiet white-noise.

my soundsystem: Realtek ALC660 HD Audio; 5.1-Channel High Definition Audio Codec
The microphone is integrated to my webcam: windows driver filename
Chicony_webcam_61180.exe

On 8.04, I managed to record but not listen, now on 8.10, it's vice
versa q:

In Skype, if I set Sound In -device to HDA Intel (plughw:Intel,0)
no error message is given, but test call doesn't return my voice

Skype uses pulseaudio (option pulse) for Sound Out and Ringing.

In Ekiga's Configuration Druid, page 7/10: Audio Devices, I do Test Settings
if audio input device is HDA Intel, nothing comes out
if audio input device is Default, the quiet white-noise is registered on the
graph but no audible voice comes out

In Audacity, choosing the ALSA: HDA Intel: ALC660-VD Analog (hw:0,0)
option produces different results depending which programs are running
on the background (I suppose), but when it works, it produces the same
white-noise. Amplifying it, I get louder white-noise, nothing of my test
speech comes through.

Hope my descriptions help solving the problem.

xorg.conf.

[Bug 135548] Re: [Gutsy] Action on critical battery isn't triggered - regression

2008-11-30 Thread Guido Conaldi
I can confirm the regression on my ubuntu up-to-date 8.10 64bit on a dell xps
m1330.
I can also confimrm the behaviour described by arturj in comment 104. For me as
well raising the critical action threshold to at least 360 seconds was working
as a workaround in ubuntu 8.04.

No bios updates happend in the mean time.

[Bug 114284] Re: Movie Player is not a good name for default audio player

2008-11-30 Thread Steven Wagner
Its not really fixed Tom. I still see the same issue in 8.10. Open up
a File Browser, navigate to a mp3 file. Right click on the mp3
file,..says Open with Movie Player. I don't really care if you want
to close the bug. Doesn't seem like anyone is going to do anything about
it anyways. Probably shouldn't have a 'fixed' status though.

[Bug 75324] Re: Gnome file chooser/selector is way to small

2008-11-30 Thread hackel
The screenshot I posted was from the Sound Preferences, when choosing a
custom sound. This is only happening under Compiz, it works fine under
Metacity. The behaviour seems consistent.

I also get the problem with Firefox, but not consistently. The dialogue
always opens small but sometimes it doesn't resize. I can't figure out
what is triggering this at all. The first few times I brought up the
open file dialogue, it was small, but now it is resizing it every time.
So far I have only seen it with the Open File dialogue, not Save File.

I will post any other instances where I notice it. I think the real
problem is the resizing--is this really necessary? If it must have a
default size, can't it be resized before the window is made visible?

Additional info: Because I have Music Player Preferences - Music - Music
files are placed in: configured to smb://server/share, every time I open

that mount and right click on an MP3 file and choose Play with
Rhythmbox, it generates the following error in the Import Errors:
Problem occurred without error being set. This is a bug in Rhythmbox or
GStreamer. Since I had already reinstalled Rhythmbox, I went through
Synaptic and chose reinstall on all the GStreamer packages. After

[Bug 199245] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crash opening any window: BadWindow X error under Xvnc

2008-11-30 Thread transistor
I can confirm this on a fresh install of intrepid x86 with all the
latest updates and vnc4server installed. It works fine under normal X
but under Xvnc, gnome-settings-daemon crashes every time it tries to
start. With nothing disabled, it segfaults when initializing the mouse
plugin. After disabling the mouse plugin, it will get a BadWindow
message as described above. Disabling the keyboard plugin in addition
makes it run without a problem.

2008-11-30 Thread Milan
Thanks for your feedback. I cannot reproduce this behavior. What do you

Obviously, resizing should happen before showing the window. This is
IMHO a little bug and should be relatively easy to fix.

Resizing manually has no effect. I tried resetting my compiz settings

dialogue will resize correctly, whereas before it was not resized every
time. Still no closer to figuring out what causes it to resize or not.
