[Bug 329773] Re: Rythmbox crashes when podcast episode reaches 100%

2009-02-16 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 330017] [NEW] extract to library can get stuck due to CD errors

2009-02-16 Thread davygrvy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I got this one CD disc with a manufacturing defect on track 9 of 15.
The extraction disc writing stops at track 9. The CD is stuck and can't
get past the errors. rhythmbox doesn't time-out. It's stuck, too.

Steps to reproduce:

1) grab a CD you hate and scratch at the top where the label paint is to get
down to the aluminum layer to make a defect.
2) try to extract it and watch the cd-rom drive get stuck into an infinite skip.
3) Watch rhythmbox not time-out and get stuck, too.
4) Notice the lack of a 'Stop extraction' button.

[Bug 330027] [NEW] Echo test noise

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ekiga

Am using Logitech Quickcam Deluxe with Ubuntu Intrepid on a Haier W-18

Could anyone call me back on nic.de...@ekiga.net to see if I can be

Hi,

Here's a debdiff that applies against the current jaunty package. After

this is obviously not great, is there any effort to get this capability added
to the spec with
a well-known name?

Thanks,

2009-02-16 Thread Savvas Radevic
This could be useful for suggestion #2, gnome-network-properties while
applying system proxies could use /etc/profile.d/

Creating the following files in /etc/profile.d, and then this will work
in *any* shell for *any* user of the system

#proxy.sh
export http_proxy=http://host.com:port/
export ftp_proxy=http://host.com:port/
export no_proxy=.domain.com
export HTTP_PROXY=http://host.com:port/
export FTP_PROXY=http://host.com:port/

[Bug 252243] Re: [intrepid] theme lost when changed resolution

2009-02-16 Thread yeeking
I have done some more testing. The T400 has an integrated Intel graphics
chip and an ATI card. When using the ATI card, the problem occurs. When
using the Intel card, it does not. If I use the ATI Catalyst Control
Centre app to change the settings, the problem does not occur.

So my current work around is to use the ATI Catalyst Control Centre app.

[Bug 28805] Re: gnome-sound-properties dialog too high

2009-02-16 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
This is just for devices that don't yet work with PulseAudio, correct?
With devices that do work using the new Sound Preferences window. (Wow,
until now I hadn't appreciated how incomprehensible the current
preferences window is.)

If you keep with the horizontal arrangement, Bill's screenshot shows
zero spacing between the top, right, and bottom edges of the right
section and the edges of the tab. All of those spacings should be 12
pixels instead. One way of making that window arrangement a bit narrower
would be to change ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (currently
the widest item in the menu) to just ALSA.

An alternative way to make the window shorter would be to keep the vertical
arrangement, but reduce redundant labels:
1. Instead of a Sound Events heading plus a Sound playback: label, have
just a Sound events playback: label.
2. Instead of a Music and Movies heading plus a Sound playback: label, have
just a Music and movies playback: label.
3. Instead of an Audio Conferencing heading plus Sound playback: and Sound
capture: labels, have just Audio conferencing playback: and Audio
conferencing capture: labels.
4. For bonus points, use checkboxes instead of multiple selection for the
devices in the Default Mixer Tracks list. This would let you get rid of the
Use the Shift and Control keys to to select multiple tracks if required text,
freeing up the space that text used.

[Bug 269204] Re: System monitor displays incorrect disk usage sizes

2009-02-16 Thread Marc Webb
Pedro and Sebastien,
I know this is going to sound harsh, will probably upset a lot of people, and
probably get me kicked off of here, but please think about the user experience
before doing so. Please take this criticism and use it to make the user
experience better. We want to make Ubuntu as pleasant to use as possible - and
that should include bug submission. I appreciate the hard work and dedication
to this open-source effort, but I feel like this should be brought out in the
open.

I thought I did exactly what Sebastien said - somebody having the issue
should send the bug upstream where the people writting the software will
read it too. I was having an issue with Ubuntu and I sent it upstream
to this bug reporting system where I assumed the people writing the
software will read it. I reported the bug here and I assumed that
someone would investigate and persue it from there. This practice of
marking the status invalid and telling the person who submitted it that
they need to send it upstream does not promote bug submission. Frankly,
it is a hassle because I don't know where upstream I'm supposed to
send it. I wouldn't know what to do even if I could find upstream. Did
anyone consider that???

When Sebastien said changing to new because it was an upstream
problem, I assumed this was all taken care of an that someone from the
Ubuntu community would be addressing it and passing it on as necessary.
When Pedro asked did you sent it upstream, I assumed Pedro was asking
Sebastien because upstream is ambiguous from my point of view and no one
directed the question to me.

I just used the bug submission functionality inside Ubuntu to submit a
small issue that I was experiencing. I didn't know I was going to have
to walk it through every step of the process. I don't mind collecting
data, but if you have several things you want the person to do, it would
be better if someone provided a list of the data to collect upfront
instead of pinging back and forth and not explaining exactly what needs
to be done. This is not very user-friendly and certainly falls short of
Linux for Humans. In all likelyhood, the majority of Ubuntu users
would have less experience with Linux than I have and requiring all
these steps to be performed with little to no explanation is an almost
sure-fire way to bury bugs. So the question is - are the bugs really
being fixed or are they all just being deemed invalid because the user,
who thought it would be a simple one or two step process to improve the
product, just gives up after being asked to do task after task?

In addition, if you are addressing one person in particular out of a
group of people, it would be more effective if you addressed them by
name or some other unique identifier, so they will know you are talking
to them and not someone else in the thread.

I hope I have not offended anyone, because that is not the intent. I
just wanted to emphasize that one-liner responses using phrases like
this is an upstream problem, not explaining what to do or who should
do it, and then closing out the ticket are just not effective problem
resolution.

Thank you for your effort.

2009-02-16 Thread Sebastien Bacher
thank you for your comment, there is no offense there, the ubuntu bug
triager do try to get useful informations on bugs to send those to the
people writting the software so they can be worked. in this case there
is nobody in the ubuntu team getting your issue or knowing the code
enough to know what informations to request, in such case it would not
be efficient to open a bug upstream without being able to reply to their
questions, that's why it has been asked if you could contact them
directly since you get the issue and could reply to their question which
is not the case for bug triagers
