[Bug 331429] [NEW] gnome does not honor the Disabled setting in sound preferences
Public bug reported: Gnome plays the access sound during access even if the corresponding option is disabled in Sound Preferences. I disabled the access sound when my system was 8.04. I added this in duplicate Bug# 331390, but here too for posterity: I downgraded libgtk2.0 and everything is back to normal. Then I changed to /var/cache/apt/archives/ and then did: sudo dpkg -i libgtk2.0-doc_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_all.deb libgtk2.0-common_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_all.deb libgtk2.0-bin_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_all.deb libgtk2.0-dev_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb libgtk2.0-0_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb gtk2-engines- pixbuf_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb libgail-dev_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb libgail-common_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb libgail18_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb That's assuming you have those versions of the files in your apt archive. -- gdmgreeter crashed with SIGSEGV in __libc_start_main() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/331292 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 331456] [NEW] Remote Desktop Viewer does not fully go fullscreen
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: vinagre I'm 'abusing' my Ubuntu laptop as an external screen for my WindowsXP using Remote Desktop Viewer. The trick is to use ZoneScreen to create a 'virtual' monitor and VNC to copy the contents from one pc to another. I have the VNC client on read-only and panned complete to the right so the visible area perfectly covers the ZoneScreen-monitor. This works flawless, even thought the total screen is rather big (1024 + 1920 + 1600 x 1200), the 100Mbit LAN handles it just fine, I assume it's smart enough to only send through the 'useful' bits. However, more often than not when I try to go full-screen, it seems a 1600x1200 'square' is assigned to VNC (= (native) resolution of the Ubuntu desktop), but it's not properly positioned at (0, 0) but instead seems to try to put itself somewhere on top of the INSIDE of the non-fullscreen (aka windowed) screen. Hence I keep to see the Ubuntu tool-bar on top of the screen, and part of the windows-screen 'falls of the bottom'. Sometimes it helps when I make the windowed version a lot smaller and then try to move it around the screen randomly and try to go full-screen (F11) again : it might jump into the correct position, but it usually takes a lot of tries... I have not found any logic in it (yet), but it seems the offset is (almost) always the top-left position of the windowed-version. Another trick is to move the VNC application to another desktop and try there... again, sometimes it works, often it doesn't. Hope this makes sense, I've included 2 screenshots to make it a bit more clear. Feel free to ask for more details via email. Thanks for making the effort to look at this ! Re: [Bug 192629] Re: Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately? on NTFS / VFAT partitions
That uid=1000 means this partition is propriety of the first user. So, if you have two users, the first one can surely trash, the second... in some cases can't! This is idiot. The partition should be propriety of super-user, and trash should be possible for all users. I've been repeating this for a year. godmarck ha scritto: Hi, I'm pretty new to Ubuntu/Linux, but I think I'm pretty much getting the idea of all this,I've already made my transition from windoze to Linux and I'm pretty sure I'm not going back to the windoze pain. I got my solution by adding to my fstab the uid=1000 part, now I can happily trash files. But I just don't get something, this uid=1000 is like an option or something?? I know UID means User ID (probably) and that the 1000 is the first user's ID number... But what does it exactly do? look at my fstab /dev/sda4 /media/sda4 ntfs-3g rw,user=godmarck,uid=1000,defaults,locale=en_US.UTF-8 0 0 Wasn't that part covered by the user=godmarck already? or that is to allow me to rw?? Btw, you can have users remain on a GUI (useful for correcting the problem over the phone): You can in fact also reboot to safety get to a prompt sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop startx and then just paste Mark Stover's string launching from any GUI terminal, inside /var/cache/apt/archives/ sudo dpkg -i libgtk2.0-doc_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_all.deb libgtk2.0-common_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_all.deb libgtk2.0-bin_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_all.deb libgtk2.0-dev_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb libgtk2.0-0_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb gtk2-engines- pixbuf_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb libgail-dev_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb libgail-common_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb libgail18_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb This will restore the previous configuration BUT seems at the same time to destroy the recent (yesterday or the day before) welcome uodate fix for all our pulseuadio problems on 64 bit boxes. [Bug 19586] Re: When nautilus cannot unmount a media, it must tell why.
I totally agree with this issue in fact being a bug. Why? -- Nautilus provides a GUI in order to take things like save mounting/unmounting to preserve filesystem integrity down from system administrator level to everyday user level. I am a system administrator for 70 linux desktop, amongst other things, but a lot of people are defecting to Apple over issues like these. OS X _does_ give helpful information about which process is blocking umount, even if the process is running in a shell. Outline how to solve: - Using information from `lsof´ you can figure out which process is blocking the umount. Furthermore the PID can be used to identify the window or terminal (even text console) that belongs to it. DBUS can then be used to signal the window manager to bring the offending windows to the foreground. Signals can then be sent the programs to initiate the `save files´ dialog. In the case of text consoles or terminal windows the GUI can present a dialog to close the programs running from those shells or close the shells themselves. This is a solvable problem in most common cases, and actually I think quite straightforward. It just needs some scripts parsing lsof, some interaction between filemanager, windowmanager and dbus, and a bit of heuristics to cover the most common cases. This is a low hanging fruit in terms of improving the user experience. Whose responsibility? -- Enabling the average clueless user to unmount usb sticks is core functionality in a desktop OS. Since Canonical aims to offer an easy to use Linux distro, primarily based on Gnome, I think that this _core functionality_ should be provided by Canonical. Since Canonical is hiring people to work on kernel, X and Gnome/KDE, I certainly feel that you cannot simply say this is an upstream issue. Upstream has different priorities. Since this is probably a relatively easy thing to solve, no major new subsystem needs to be invented, just using existing subsystems and programs like `lsof´, I think Canonical should get involved with upstream to fix this once and for all. -- When nautilus cannot unmount a media, it must tell why. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/19586 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 327671] Re: python-gconf: built with rpath
As pointed out by Andrés Ambrois on IRC, it appears this issue could be solved by syncing gnome-python with Debian experimental: gnome-python (2.22.3-1) experimental; urgency=low . [ Luca Bruno ] * New upstream release * rules: - Remove patch system * Add docs file * debian/control: - Bump Standards-Version to 3.8.0 (no changes needed) - Add python-gnome2-doc package - Add gtk-doc-tools to Build-Deps - python-gnome2 Suggests python-gnome2-doc - python-gnome2-dev Recommends python-gnome2-doc * python-gnome2.examples moved to python-gnome2-doc.examples * Change Homepage to http://www.pygtk.org/; the previous Homepage was a redirect to the new url. . [ Emilio Pozuelo Monfort ] * Remove dpatch build-dependency. . [ Josselin Mouette ] * Require python 2.5 to match the change in pygobject. * Add quilt patch system; build-depend on quilt. * 70_relibtoolize.patch: new patch. Relibtoolize the source to avoid the rpath issue on amd64. * Add copyright statements. -- python-gconf: built with rpath https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/327671 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-python in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

that works fine for me, could you try with another new user created on your system? that could be something broken on your configuration rather than a bug. ** Changed in: libgnome (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low Assignee: (unassigned) = Ubuntu Desktop Bugs (desktop-bugs) Status: New = Incomplete -- gnome-terminal - right-click a URL and select 'open link' does nothing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/331394 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
