[Bug 331416] Re: gdm fails with the greeter application appears to be crashing after upgrading to jaunty

2009-02-19 Thread Martin Pool
That line is

 111 gdm_wm_allscreens = g_new (GdkRectangle, gdm_wm_screens);
 112 for (i = 0; i  gdm_wm_screens; i++)
 113 gdk_screen_get_monitor_geometry (screen, i,
gdm_wm_allscreens + i);
 114
 115 if (gdm_wm_screens  cur_screen_num)
 116 cur_screen_num = 0;
 117
 118 gdm_wm_screen = gdm_wm_allscreens[cur_screen_num];
 119 }

it seems plausible that it is crashing there.

[Bug 331429] [NEW] gnome does not honor the Disabled setting in sound preferences

2009-02-19 Thread Lucio Crusca
Public bug reported:

Gnome plays the access sound during access even if the corresponding
option is disabled in Sound Preferences.

I disabled the access sound when my system was 8.04. When I upgraded to
8.10 it started to play it even if the setting has not changed and it's
still disabled.

The setting I disabled is System/Preferences/Sound/Sound/Graphical
Environment/Access. (please note that I use IT locale and that's my
translation of menus, maybe not exact).

[Bug 331416] Re: gdm fails with the greeter application appears to be crashing after upgrading to jaunty

2009-02-19 Thread Martin Pool
I hoped that changing gdmgreeter to gdmlogin in gdm.conf would do as a
workaround, but it doesn't. However, turning on autologin in that file
avoids the whole problem and does let me get back in to my machine.

[Bug 331416] Re: gdm fails with the greeter application appears to be crashing after upgrading to jaunty

2009-02-19 Thread Martin Pool
Poking at it a bit more i thought this was interesting:

(gdb) p gdk_screen_get_n_monitors(gdk_screen_get_default())
$32 = 0
(gdb) l
106
107 screen = gdk_screen_get_default ();
108
109 gdm_wm_screens = gdk_screen_get_n_monitors (screen);
110
111 gdm_wm_allscreens = g_new (GdkRectangle, gdm_wm_screens);
112 for (i = 0; i  gdm_wm_screens; i++)
113 gdk_screen_get_monitor_geometry (screen, i,
gdm_wm_allscreens + i);
114
115 if (gdm_wm_screens  cur_screen_num)
(gdb) n
112 for (i = 0; i  gdm_wm_screens; i++)
(gdb)
115 if (gdm_wm_screens  cur_screen_num)
(gdb)
118 gdm_wm_screen = gdm_wm_allscreens[cur_screen_num];
(gdb) p cur_screen_num
$33 = 0
(gdb) p gdm_wm_allscreens
$34 = (GdkRectangle *) 0x0

That seems to be the immediate cause of the crash.

[Bug 331292] Re: gdmgreeter crashed with SIGSEGV in __libc_start_main()

2009-02-19 Thread mark stover
I added this in duplicate Bug# 331390, but here too for posterity:

I downgraded libgtk2.0 and everything is back to normal. The following
list are interdependent, so I downgraded them all:

libgtk2.0-0
libgtk2.0-bin
libgtk2.0-common
libgtk2.0-dev
libgtk2.0-doc
libgail18
libgail-common
libgail-dev
gtk2-engines-pixbuf

===

What I did was Ctrl-Alt-F1 to a terminal. Then I changed to
/var/cache/apt/archives/

and then did:

sudo dpkg -i libgtk2.0-doc_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_all.deb
libgtk2.0-common_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_all.deb
libgtk2.0-bin_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_all.deb
libgtk2.0-dev_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb
libgtk2.0-0_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb gtk2-engines-
pixbuf_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb libgail-dev_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb
libgail-common_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb
libgail18_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb

That's assuming you have those versions of the files in your apt
archive.

Thank you for the notification.

I've confirmed I have 6.11.0 in my Xorg.log, and while the update
unfortunately did not fix the issue, I did find something in testing:
attempting to turn off the LCD in Display Settings takes an inordinate
amount of time to fail, but afterwards the screen size is set correctly.

[Bug 331443] [NEW] /etc/init.d/gdm reload fails when gdm is not running

2009-02-19 Thread Daniel Richard G.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

The gdm init script reload action is invoked when installing other
packages that affect the configuration. However, if gdm is not running,
the script does not behave in a very graceful manner. Observe:

# /etc/init.d/gdm reload
 * Reloading GNOME Display Manager configuration...
 * Changes will take effect when all current X sessions have ended.
# echo $?
1
#

What current X sessions?? I believe the script should just exit 0
silently in this case, or at the most complain that gdm isn't running,
so it has nothing to do.

2009-02-19 Thread Psy[H[]
as a workaround user can add old volume applet to panel for quick volume
control and create gnome-alsamixer launcher near it for access to mixer.

But that is ugly. Mixer should be easier to access by default, and
pulseaudio should be uninstallable without usability failures.

[Bug 331456] [NEW] Remote Desktop Viewer does not fully go fullscreen

2009-02-19 Thread deroby
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vinagre

I'm 'abusing' my Ubuntu laptop as an external screen for my WindowsXP using
Remote Desktop Viewer. The trick is to use ZoneScreen to create a 'virtual'
monitor and VNC to copy the contents from one pc to another.
I have the VNC client on read-only and panned complete to the right so the
visible area perfectly covers the ZoneScreen-monitor.

This works flawless, even thought the total screen is rather big (1024 +
1920 + 1600 x 1200), the 100Mbit LAN handles it just fine, I assume it's
smart enough to only send through the 'useful' bits.

However, more often than not when I try to go full-screen, it seems a 1600x1200
'square' is assigned to VNC (= (native) resolution of the Ubuntu desktop), but
it's not properly positioned at (0, 0) but instead seems to try to put itself
somewhere on top of the INSIDE of the non-fullscreen (aka windowed) screen.
Hence I keep to see the Ubuntu tool-bar on top of the screen, and part of the
windows-screen 'falls of the bottom'.
Sometimes it helps when I make the windowed version a lot smaller and then try
to move it around the screen randomly and try to go full-screen (F11) again :
it might jump into the correct position, but it usually takes a lot of tries...
I have not found any logic in it (yet), but it seems the offset is (almost)
always the top-left position of the windowed-version.

Another trick is to move the VNC application to another desktop and
try there... again, sometimes it works, often it doesn't.

Hope this makes sense, I've included 2 screenshots to make it a bit more clear.
Feel free to ask for more details via email.
Thanks for making the effort to look at this !

[Bug 331478] [NEW] automatically synchronize remote mail locally seems to not work all the time

2009-02-19 Thread marco.pallotta
Public bug reported:

I have an imap account sync with gmail and I set automatically synchronize
remote mail locally to have the ability to read email even when I use
evolution in offline mode. But I have noticed that not all the emails were
downloaded so I think this option doesn't work all the time.
In fact if I go to off-line mode (I click on the icon in the bottom left part
of the client) evolution askes to me if I want to sync my folders but I reply
not sync as I already set automatically synchronize remote mail locally
(that is the emails should be completely downloaded and not only the header,
subject, and so on as it happens in the default mode) so the emails should be
already sync. But if I want to read them, some are downloaded others not. But
if I select sync evolution starts to sync all my emails and all are readable
in offline mode too.

Tested with Ubuntu Hardy Heron and Evolution 2.22.3.1

[Bug 330601] Re: Appointment acceptance mail with wrong sender address poses Yes/No question, but only gives OK button

2009-02-19 Thread kurti
Steps to reproduce:

1. Create a new appointment

2. Right click the appointment and select Besprechung ansetzen... (my
translation: Schedule meeting...)

3. Enter a mail address for which the reply address will be different.

4. On the receiving mail account accept the invitation but make sure
that the confirmation will be sent with a different sender address than
the one you typed in step 3, e.g. due to domain canonicalization like
scooter-attack instead of scooterattack or a mail forwarder.

5. when receiving the confirmation click on Teilnehmerstatus
aktualisieren (my translation: Update participant's status and you
will get the message

BTW: I tried to reproduce this with KMail, but KMail notices the
different address and asks me which one to use for the reply.

Re: [Bug 192629] Re: Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately? on NTFS / VFAT partitions

2009-02-19 Thread Mat
That uid=1000 means this partition is propriety of the first user.
So, if you have two users, the first one can surely trash, the second...
in some cases can't!
This is idiot.
The partition should be propriety of super-user, and trash should be
possible for all users.
I've been repeating this for a year.

godmarck ha scritto:
 Hi, I'm pretty new to Ubuntu/Linux, but I think I'm pretty much getting the
 idea of all this,I've already made my transition from windoze to Linux and
 I'm pretty sure I'm not going back to the windoze pain.
 I got my solution by adding to my fstab the uid=1000 part, now I can
 happily trash files.
 But I just don't get something, this uid=1000 is like an option or
 something??
 I know UID means User ID (probably) and that the 1000 is the first user's
 ID number...
 But what does it exactly do? look at my fstab
 /dev/sda4 /media/sda4 ntfs-3g
 rw,user=godmarck,uid=1000,defaults,locale=en_US.UTF-8 0 0

 Wasn't that part covered by the user=godmarck already? or that is to allow
 me to rw??
 I'm pretty sure I've got some things there that are not needed at all.
 I'm not sure if this is the place to ask about this, but I'd appreciate any
 help.

[Bug 331487] [NEW] [jaunty] Plugin configuration crashes Evolution

2009-02-19 Thread Matti Viljanen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-plugins

Configuring some plugins crashes Evolution.

How to reproduce:
1) Open Evolution
2a) Edit - Plugins - Attachment Reminder - Configure OR
2a) Edit - Plugins - Custom Header - Configure
3) Click add button
4) Type some text, do not press enter
5) Click add button again
6) Kaboom!

If enter key is pressed after step 4), the crash does not occur.
However, plugin Templates has similar but multi-fielded list, procuding
the same steps don't make Evolution crash.

Using Jaunty, Evolution 2.25.91. No debug messages are generated, just
memory overflow notice.

PS. This bug seems the kind of that could exist in many places... So far
I haven't been able to reproduce it in any other places.

[Bug 331292] Re: gdmgreeter crashed with SIGSEGV in __libc_start_main()

2009-02-19 Thread Efraim Karsh
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 331324 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/331324

Confirmed. But there seems to be a pulseaudio catch, see below.

Btw, you can have users remain on a GUI (useful for correcting the problem over
the phone):
You can in fact also

reboot to safety
get to a prompt
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
startx
and then just paste Mark Stover's string launching from any GUI terminal, inside
/var/cache/apt/archives/

sudo dpkg -i libgtk2.0-doc_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_all.deb
libgtk2.0-common_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_all.deb
libgtk2.0-bin_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_all.deb
libgtk2.0-dev_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb
libgtk2.0-0_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb gtk2-engines-
pixbuf_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb libgail-dev_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb
libgail-common_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb
libgail18_2.15.3-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb

This will restore the previous configuration BUT seems at the same time
to destroy the recent (yesterday or the day before) welcome uodate fix
for all our pulseuadio problems on 64 bit boxes.

This -afaics- will compel us again to ditch pulseaudio or kill restart it
every boot with the usual
pulseaudio -k ; start-pulseaudio-x11
command

Any better solution?

[Bug 19586] Re: When nautilus cannot unmount a media, it must tell why.

2009-02-19 Thread perpetualrabbit
I totally agree with this issue in fact being a bug.

Why?
--
Nautilus provides a GUI in order to take things like save mounting/unmounting
to preserve filesystem integrity down from system administrator level to
everyday user level.
I am a system administrator for 70 linux desktop, amongst other things, but a
lot of people are defecting to Apple over issues like these. OS X _does_ give
helpful information about which process is blocking umount, even if the process
is running in a shell.

Outline how to solve:
-
Using information from `lsof´ you can figure out which process is blocking
the umount. Furthermore the PID can be used to identify the window or terminal
(even text console) that belongs to it. DBUS can then be used to signal the
window manager to bring the offending windows to the foreground.
Signals can then be sent the programs to initiate the `save files´ dialog.
In the case of text consoles or terminal windows the GUI can present a dialog
to close the programs running from those shells or close the shells themselves.

This is a solvable problem in most common cases, and actually I think quite
straightforward. It just needs some scripts parsing lsof, some interaction
between
filemanager, windowmanager and dbus, and a bit of heuristics to cover the most
common cases.
This is a low hanging fruit in terms of improving the user experience.

Whose responsibility?
--
Enabling the average clueless user to unmount usb sticks is core functionality
in a desktop OS.
Since Canonical aims to offer an easy to use Linux distro, primarily based on
Gnome, I think that this _core functionality_ should be provided by Canonical.
Since Canonical is hiring people to work on kernel, X and Gnome/KDE, I
certainly feel that you cannot simply say this is an upstream issue.
Upstream has different priorities. Since this is probably a relatively easy
thing to solve, no major new subsystem needs to be invented, just using existing
subsystems and programs like `lsof´, I think Canonical should get involved with
upstream to fix this once and for all.

[Bug 305439] Re: Evolution incorrectly re-writes a CalDAV server url to always begin with caldav://

2009-02-19 Thread Pete Goodall

possible, I would suggest the fix be backported to Ubuntu 8.04, as that
is an LTS release.

[Bug 327671] Re: python-gconf: built with rpath

2009-02-19 Thread Joel Stanley
As pointed out by Andrés Ambrois on IRC, it appears this issue could be
solved by syncing gnome-python with Debian experimental:

 gnome-python (2.22.3-1) experimental; urgency=low
 .
   [ Luca Bruno ]
   * New upstream release
   * rules:
 - Remove patch system
   * Add docs file
   * debian/control:
 - Bump Standards-Version to 3.8.0 (no changes needed)
 - Add python-gnome2-doc package
 - Add gtk-doc-tools to Build-Deps
 - python-gnome2 Suggests python-gnome2-doc
 - python-gnome2-dev Recommends python-gnome2-doc
   * python-gnome2.examples moved to python-gnome2-doc.examples
   * Change Homepage to http://www.pygtk.org/; the previous Homepage was a
 redirect to the new url.
 .
   [ Emilio Pozuelo Monfort ]
   * Remove dpatch build-dependency.
 .
   [ Josselin Mouette ]
   * Require python 2.5 to match the change in pygobject.
   * Add quilt patch system; build-depend on quilt.
   * 70_relibtoolize.patch: new patch. Relibtoolize the source to avoid
 the rpath issue on amd64.
